DNF @ 21%

I can't believe this book was written in 2022. I don't think I've come across anything as fatphobic as this book before. The first 9% of the novel were littered with unnecessarily crude weight descriptions. I decided to give it a second chance until 20% because I have loved Tudor's work before - but gave up when I read the sentence "his fat face crumpled". Same. Mine did too.

No one else seems to mention this so I don't know if I'm just too sensitive about the topic at hand. But all of these seem out of place and unnecessary. I obviously don't know if it plays a role in the ending, but I doubt it.
.
.
Here are some quotes to back up my viewing:

"His stomach spilt over his jeans. Hannah found it slightly disgusting."

"Overweight in his youth and later, his features had always been a little raw."

"Welland. Overweight, acnespattered... "

"So, despite the fact he was a miserable, whiny sack of shit with a sly underbelly and a fondness for stirring, they were forced to tolerate him."

"... athleticlooking young man with dark hair and a blandly handsome face, a slender girl with short, brown hair and glasses and a lanky youth with a ponytail and facial piercings, the puker. They talked among themselves."
.
.
Of course the fat people are depicted as gross while the skinnier people are viewed as attractive and popular. I am so disheartened. I really looked forward to this book.

Thank you Penguin Books South Africa for the Netgalley e-arc in return for my honest opinion.

Edit: I don't normally rate DNF books, but I'm feeling bitter about this.

My first experience of this author, and I found it well written, and a great thriller. I would recommend, a thoroughly good read!

My thanks to the Publishers via NetGalley for a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

What has happened? A group of apparently disconnected events happen at a similar time in different places. As the characters are trying to cope with what has happened to them individually and as the story progresses the characters all appear to have one goal in their sights and that is to survive events happening around them. No one is sure who they can trust or if anyone can be trusted.

This was a solid 4 star read from this reviewer. Another great read by this Author, she sure knows how to grab the reader and write a great story. If you enjoy stories that take you out of your comfort zone, then this may be the book for you. It is a mix of post apocalyptic meets horror. To be honest these are genres that I love reading and I look forward with baited breath, to what she writes next for us to devour.

Bring them on ......

C.J. Tudor has written another gripping book that manages to leave you suspicious of every single character and your heckles up. None of the main characters come across particularly well or as people you’d want to be stuck in a precarious situation with for fear of (literally) being stabbed in the back while blinking. The pace is fast and the plot twists and turns quickly along with heaps of grisly shocks and surprises, it’s a truly terrifying and creepy thriller with the tension building throughout. I cannot recommend The Drift enough to fans of twisty mysteries and thrillers with a horror dystopian element added in.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book through NetGalley and Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House, which did not influence my unbiased and honest review of the book.

Picture this: a small town hiding big secrets, and you're right in the middle of it all. Tudor's storytelling is pure magic, with twists and turns that'll keep you guessing until the very end. And the characters? They're so real, you'll swear you know them personally. If you're a sucker for suspense and surprises, this book is a must-read. Seriously, grab a copy and prepare for a wild ride.

This is the first book that I've read by C.J. Tudor but it certainly won't be the last.
I really liked how atmospheric this was, as well as three different plot lines, which are seemingly unconnected until they're weaved together brilliantly towards the end.
I wasn't expecting it to be as dystopian as it was but that was a pleasant surprise.
There were possibly a few too many characters for me to keep track of and because of this, I didn't really connect to any of the characters. That probably wasn't ideal as they ended up being quite disposable.
But this had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. And I will definitely be recommending it to others.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A claustrophobic thriller which is so chilling in places. The story is told over multiple timelines. They are linked together very well eventually. There are many good characters who are all hiding secrets.

This is the first C.J. Tudor book I have read, and I’ve been meaning to start reading this author’s books for quite a while.
The Drift is great to read during the winter, but I did need to sit by my warm fire as it’s a chiller..: in both senses.
The horror of a killer lurking lingers on every page, it’s got all the twists and misdirections you want from this genre of book, and more!
I think the plot is well constructed and for the whole, it works brilliantly.
Fun, scary and pacey! Recommended!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I picked this up I was on the hunt for a cosy mystery book that was taking place in a wintery setting that I could curl up by the fire and read & reaching for The drift was 100% the perfect option for this.

The drift follows three major plots :
1 - an overturned coach full of students that are all trapped
2 - An isolated Chalet full of friend that may soon become enemies
And 3 - a stranded cable cart full of strangers, one of whom is dead

All of this is happening amidst a violent snow storm, but the snow storm is the least of their worries at this point!

If you’re a fan of tv shows like The last of us then this book will be right up your street, it kept me totally captivated from start to finish.
I adore books set in cold environments especially snowstorms as they are guaranteed to always add extra levels of anxiety to ongoing situations, in this case our characters are not only up against the cold, but there’s also a killer on the loose and a deadly virus that’s sweeping the earth.
It is such a clever and well thought out book, the switching between each character’s situations, the short fast paced chapters, the constantly building feeling of dread, I just genuinely couldn’t put this down and I cannot believe this is my first C.J Tudor novel *runs to read the rest asap*

Honestly if you enjoy a good tense atmospheric thriller with dystopian themes then please grab a blanket, curl up on the couch and give this book a go! You won’t be disappointed

I love that CJ Tudor's books are never quite what you expect. There is always a spooky element but you're never quite sure what the big bad will be.

Told in both past and present I did get a little confused at times but that's on me.

Another great book from this author.

Hannah wakes up in the middle of a bus crash. Meg wakes up in a cable car with 5 strangers and no knowledge of how she got there and Carter looks out of a isolated ski chalet. Outside the weather worsens and a killer hides among them.

The Drift was an intriguing thriller with many twists and turns. I really enjoyed the three different character view points and the snowy isolated location added to the tense and suspenseful atmosphere. A gripping and thrilling thriller that I couldn't put down.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.

Gosh this was a thrilling ride! Three different plot lines cunningly weave together (I kept thinking ‘where is this going?!’) but C J Tudor is a clever writer and I knew it would be worth the wait! One thing for sure is I am never ever going in a cable car!!!

I’m a huge fan of Tudor’s other work so was excited to pick up The Drift, unfortunately what I didn’t realise was it’s more of an apocalyptic-zombie/pandemic style then her other books so while it was a good read, I just didn’t love it.
That being said this still has Tudor’s page-turner style and has plenty of wtf moments to keep you on the edge of your seat. Multiple messy and downright bizarre situations coupled with a slew of gory heart in your throat moments means this will definitely appeal to those who are fans of the apocalyptic horror/thriller genre.

Thank you to Michael Joseph & Penguin for an advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review!

I love the fact that CJ Tudor's novels are unique in their own right. I think this is now my favourite because of its intrigue and complexity. There are 3 stories in one and she weaves them together brilliantly. Set in a bleak snowy place the cast is as diverse as they come.

This book was fantastic - the author paints such a vivid picture that you can picture it happening! It’s quite creepy and dystopian, switching between lots of different viewpoints. A good read!
