Ellie Reeves saves yet another young woman who gets lost in an old orphanage. Then she discovers bones from long ago. Are these from former residents of the orphanage that closed so very long ago? Ellie is determine to find out who the bones belong to and what happened to them.

As Ellie digs deeper into the past, a body of a former worker at the orphanage is found. Why was the woman killed? What do the markings on her body mean? Can Ellie solve the case or will the killer put Ellie in ice?

I love a good mystery with a strong female protagonist and Ellie fit the bill. While I generally read cozy mysteries, this is one of the few non cozy series that I have on my must read list. I adore Rita Herron and her writing…she captures you and pulls you in with each and every book she releases. If you haven’t read one of her books yet, these read fine as standalone, so get started and you’ll be hooked too.

The past comes tumbling into the present in this 6th book in the Detective Ellie Reeves series, and with it the body count again piles up. This story shows the haunting past of a now shuttered Children’s home where it quickly becomes evident that bad things happened in the home and someone wants to keep the truth hidden.
So many twists and turns in this one.
It helps to have read the other books in this series’ but not essential to enjoy the book.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the opportunity to read.

Suspense to the max! Strong characters and a complex and addictive investigation. Murder, torture, rape, child abuse, secrets and lies, and the wicked will pay. Series stays strong, a must read for mystery fans.

I liked this book and cannot wait to read more in this series. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy to read for review…electronically of course…mystery…murder…mayhem…intrigue…I like the protagonist…having not read others in this series, I was somewhat confused about the relation of the characters to each other…and there are tons of them…this author is talented at weaving a story that is difficult to
put down…enjoy this book on a rainy afternoon or by the beach…cozy up in a comfy chair with a cup of steaming herbal tea…a scone or a muffin…don’t stop…the ending is somewhat surprising…

Children… As soon as a baby enters the world, you will in love with them. You are determined to cherish them and help and protect them in every possible way. Sometime though lives happens and parents die or get ill. You count on social services to take over.

Not every parent is a loving one unfortunately. Children are a burden to them or they use them for the most disgusting things. That’s when foster parents should take over.

Orphanages and foster parents should be a God’s gift to those children who have been through so much in their, often, very young lives. It’s really painful to realise the truth is, more than once, devastating. The abuse continues for some or starts right there for others.

Adults who should make sure those children are cared for, seem to be vile characters. Big brutes against defenceless little humans. David against Goliath where David almost always looses.

Honestly, these children are traumatized for the rest of their lives. Some are strong and learn to beat the monsters from the past. Others break when it seems the past can no longer remain in the past. There is only one thing left for them to do: make sure the secrets are just that: secrets.

In this already (if know time does fly) 6th book we treated to a very complex story that is both disgusting and amazing. Once more I am wondering who the real baddies are here. Of course killing or hurting someone is never a good thing, but should we not also blame to people who are at the base of the actions?

Not everything is dark though. There is a little sparkle of romance too. Who would you like to win Ellie’s heart? I know who I am supporting and I think they are a way better match. 😊

Great book that I had to finish as soon as possible no matter what. 5 stars.

Thank you

There’s something about this series that keeps me coming back. But at the same time I just can’t get invested in the characters. I’m just not sure what it is.

This story was really complicated and every time you thought it was done another killer was revealed. And I can’t help but feel sorry for Cord. I’m just not sure how I want it all to go.

But all in all a fast paced read. I just wished I was more invested in the characters.

This one was hard to put down, so many twists and turns. Great plot with interesting characters. There is a thread left at the end of the book that could lead to another book. I hope so. After reading this one if there is another book with these characters I will definitely read it. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
