Millie is desperate to be on Broadway and will do anything it takes to make that a reality. In a bid to get her Dad allow her to attend the most prestigious theatre school across the US, she ends up working alongside her arch nemesis and rival Oliver over the summer when trying to make her dream come true. Along the way, she sets out to find her mother who was also a huge Broadway fan.

This was a cute YA story with slight Mamma Mia vibes. If you love Broadway, you'll love this story!

Millie has big dreams and big plans. A Broadway obsessive, she's determined to hit the big time - even if that means moving over 3000 miles away from her dad and aunt, and looking for the mother she never knew.

This made me feel so old. I grew up writing Live journal entries, pouring my heart out onto my little square of the Internet and to see Millie experience this via her dad's old account really had me reminiscing. I could relate to his personality a lot. Probably more than Millie to be honest, but I think that just says more about me not being the target audience than any negativity towards Millie as a character. Millie is funny and sweet, and really just a massive theatre geek. Her relationship with Ollie felt very genuine and cute - much like a teenage romance should. And I liked her friendship with Teddy too.

The plot is very much a Mamma Mia type, found family narrative which keeps everything feeling lighthearted and fun while still tackling the typical teenage topics of self discovery and independence. Emma Lord doesn't let the plot get bogged down in too much heaviness, and manages to straddle the line perfectly between getting a positive message across in a fun and playful way.

This was a really fun young adult read and I'd definitely recommend to the teenagers in my life.

When You Get The Chance by Emma Lord
I have not read anything by Emma Lord before however when I heard that this book was a theatre kids dream, I knew I had to read it. I was not disappointed. This is a Mamma Mia retelling however the genders of the parents are reversed. My face ached by the end of this book from smiling so much from this little book of sunshine. If you want a Mamma Mia meets Glee (because Millie is nothing if not dramatic and only what Rachel Berry dreams she could be).
“What were the last seventeen years of aggressive jazz hands and late nights watching bootleg Lea Salonga videos and openly weeping to the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack for if not this?”
Millie Price is the stereotypical theatre kid who lives with her dad and her club owner aunt however when her dad decides to stop her from going to a prestige drama school, she decides to take things into her own hands. By reaching out to her mother who gave her away when she was born. Her best friend Teddy, a geocacher who can reach any information in seconds, finds her three potential mothers. When Millie decides she wants to speak to all of them she embarks on a summer full of theatre and plenty of drama.
Everything about this book made me smile but the dad and daughter relationship made this book for me. The relationship between Millie and her dad was heart-warming especially when they both begin to accept their relationship and watching them strengthen their relationship.
“She’s also single-handedly responsible for putting baritone heartthrob Baron Levait on the map.”
The musical theatre references were amazing, and I loved how they were referenced throughout this book. Also, the actor Baron Levait was such a subtle nod to the theatre industry, and I loved what his character brought to the book. I wish I had highlighted how many musicals were mentioned because it was like seeing myself in book format. This is Broadway in a book, and I need more.
I loved this book because Millie felt so relatable. Her moods and dreams of going to a drama school made me so happy to see her develop throughout this book as a person and as an actor. Millie has so many questions that she needs answering and she’s struggling to find them showing her feeling lost.
Overall, this book was a fast-paced, drama filled book which left me wanting more and to be Millie Price. It was fun whilst covering serious issues accompanied by Broadway references and hilarious friendship moments. This book was undeniably a five out of five for me just because I loved every moment of this book and I want more of these books to exist. I definitely recommend picking this one up for some light-hearted musical fun.

Decent okayish read.

I have read Emma’s books and love them but this book I felt it was a bit too slow but it is a decent read and can be read for a break. I wouldn’t say it was great it was okay you can get through it and survive the book and personally I had to take breaks to finish the book.

A delightful offering from Lord, filled with layers of laughter and heartache and a fabulous Mama Mia twist. I loved it, even though it made me feel terribly old that she starts looking for her mum based on her dad's old livejournal posts...

A quick and easy read that I found myself picking up after a long day to unwind. The characters are beautifully written and I came to love them within the first few pages and was rooting for them all the way to the end. At times I wanted to stop reading because I just wanted the experience to go on for longer.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely love musicals, not quite to the extent of being a theatre kid - or to the extent that the main character of this book loves musicals - but I do love them, especially Mamma Mia!, so this was a lot of fun to read. It was a little jarring to read a book where the main character has the same first name as me, I've never read that before, so it took me out of the story a few times, but that's obviously not the book's fault, just a personal thing!
I really enjoy the concept of Mamma Mia!, and this follows that same concept of trying to figure out who your missing parent is between three people, in Millie's case, trying to figure out who her mum is between Beth, Steph and Farrah, all the while interning for the best talent manager in New York City, Georgie Check. But there's also, like in the original Mamma Mia!, a lot of focus on the relationship between Millie and the parent she has known her whole life, her dad, Cooper. I loved their relationship, it was so sweet and you could really feel the love between them, as well as with her aunt Heather who took over the mum role in her life.
I did find the book to be a bit predictable (I guessed who the mum was way before the end), and I struggled as I didn't find Millie to be spending a lot of time with any of these potential mums - I couldn't feel a connection between any of them and her. But I loved the book as a whole, especially Millie's best friend Teddy and his side plot, as well as Millie's rival, Oliver, and the way their dynamic plays out.

I didn't enjoy this book at all.
I found it very slow in pacing, it had needless adjectives all over the place - I mean, just get to the point. It was all a bit wishy washy.
It took a long time to get going, and I found the characters really annoying.

Not for me!
