This book had me hooked right from the beginning. Although at times, it was a bit over the top, it is certainly a page turner. It kept me guessing, which I enjoy and the author certainly weaved a web of wrong turns and misleading twists. No spoilers, so let’s just say that I couldn’t put it down!

A gripping page turner that left me feeling a little disappointed. This had all of the ingredients for a truly stunning read, unfortunately the end left a lot to be desired. I was quite disappointed after loving the twists & turns.

Unfortunately I dnf this book as I didn’t get on with the narrator of the story. The accent was broad and not very easy to understand.

I remember reading Hunter's first book, The Serial Killer's Wife- I listened to the entire audiobook in one day, which I have rarely managed to do. So when the Daughter book came on NetGalley too, I was ecstatic to get approved and see how it compared.
Whilst I really enjoyed it and was gripped throughout, the ending disappointed me as I saw the culprit coming from a mile off. I am rarely one to nail the perpetrator, and particularly from an early stage of the book, so this one didn't have the wow ending of the first book.
Nonetheless, it was a really enjoyable listen. I was thinking about it a lot, listening to it as much as possible, and it kept me engaged throughout. Which is no mean feat.

Works great as an audiobook and I definitely enjoyed the audio version more than I did the physical copy

I enjoyed this storyline but think I would have enjoyed reading it more as a physical book rather than an audiobook. Although the story was gripping, I personally felt that the narration slowed it down a little and it took me longer than expected to complete. Overall though, a very good addition to this series of books and I highly enjoyed.

Great listen

The second in the Serial Killers Family books by Alice Hunter.I have listened and enjoyed them both
There are some similarities to other books but dont let that deter you

Jenny has a secret secret, her father was a prolific serial killer but she was only a child when he was arrested and she has made a successful life and marriage but things are happening Could murder run in the family ?

The Serial Killer's Daughter was definitely a book that I wanted to read before I even read what it was about, and that was based purely on the author and having read The Serial Killer's Wife.
Jenny has a hidden past that even her Husband Mark doesn't know about. And she wants to keep it that way. Letting anyone find out that she is the daughter of infamous Serial killer Paul Slater would destroy her life. She's worked hard to build a successful career and a loving family. So she is devastated when it seems that she may be linked to a local missing woman, presumed murdered. And I say may be linked because Jenny is suffering from blackouts and can't remember chunks of time. But then there's also her Husband who has started to act strangely. Plus someone starts leaving dead animals on her doorstep! Jenny's life is falling apart.
I have to say that this book didn't have quite the shocking twists I was expecting after Serial Killer's Wife but despite that I still really enjoyed it. Jenny was an interesting and likeable character, I couldn't figure out what was really going on (always a good thing in a thriller), and Jenny's past life seemed realistic and believable.
So here I am, just waiting for Alice Hunter's next book so I can delve in!

Sadly I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. Although I did hear it fully, it didn't manage to grab my attention all the time and I was just waiting for the end to arrive, which was ok when it did, so all in all a nice read but one that didn't live up to the expectations.
Thanks for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.

I found the opening scene of the book so grim that I nearly couldn’t read the rest of it, describing as it does the pulling apart of a live butterfly. Why I found this so unpalatable when I read so much crime fiction in which terrible things are done to live human bodies is anybody’s guess.🤷🏻‍♀️

Jane, now Jenny, is the eponymous daughter of the title. She had grown up in the shadow of her parents’ past and managed to leave it all behind her, creating a new life for herself as a vet, a wife and mother. It should all be perfect but Jenny is having blackouts, with no memory of what she’s has done during them and when her husband’s former lover is abducted, even Jenny wonders if her genes are catching up with her.

This should have been a more engaging read than I found it and I think that part of the issue for me was the level of acceptance of coincidence and credulity expected of the reader/listener. I also didn’t really warm to the characters, which didn’t help. I listened to the audiobook version and the narration was ok but a bit slow.

With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher, HarperCollins UK Audio for an audiobook arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The serial killers daughter - Alice Hunter

Although kinda predictable towards the end I Loved this! I only wish I knew about the first one before I started reading this one. 🤦‍♀️ I do plan to read them all.

As with the first in the series, The Serial Killer's Wife, this is not your usual serial killer story and although this is the second book, you don't have to have read the first ... this can be listened to/read as a standalone very easily.

Jenny is a local vet living with her husband and 2 children in a quiet village in Devon where nothing usually happens but then a young woman goes missing, Jenny is having blackouts and someone is leaving her "presents" on her doorstep. Jenny starts to doubt her own sanity and suspects those around her but could it be related to her father, the serial killer known as The Painted Lady Killer? Is Jenny taking after her father?

This is a great book to listen to and although it's a slow burner, it certainly kept me engaged throughout. It's full of suspense and mystery with a great twist at the end and I particularly liked the narrators who did a great job.

Many thanks to HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to The Serial Killer's Daughter and share my thoughts.

Description 🔖

In a quiet village in Devon, not a lot happens. It suits local vet Jenny perfectly as the quiet life is what she has always craved. That all starts to fall apart when a local woman goes missing and the police confirm that they are treating the investigation as an abduction.

This isn’t the first time Jenny has been within close proximity of a serious criminal investigation. Her father is a notorious serial killer and this missing woman case has so many similarities, it is bringing back terrible memories and triggering bad thoughts. Jenny has to remind herself that her father’s evilness doesn’t run in her blood. Or does it?

General Thoughts 🤔

I read the first book in this series; The Serial Killer’s Wife and I enjoyed it, but I was hoping for a little more from this second book. I’m so happy to say that I got it. I enjoyed this book more than the first and thought that it was definitely a development for this author.

The story was compelling, full of twists and red herrings and had me hooked right from the start. At first I thought that it would be a continuation of the first book, but it was new characters and a new story which I really enjoyed. I became invested in the characters in this book quite quickly and I had come to my own conclusions about what was going to happen for them. I was right about some, but not all.

Characters 👫👭👬

I really liked Jenny as a main character. I have to admit that I never doubted her throughout the story and I think that I probably would have made many of the same decisions. I’m not sure I’d want to go around letting everyone know about my serial killer of a father. I found it interesting and disappointing that her husband reacted to this news and let it alter his perception of her as a wife and as a mother.

There are lots of side characters in this story that could have all had a part to play in the abduction and I enjoyed scrutinising all of them. I won’t give away spoilers of course. I had strong feelings about some of them (negative and positive) and others I very quickly disregarded.

Writing Style ✍️

In my review of Alice Hunter’s first book, I mentioned that the pace lost it’s momentum. I think that this book was the complete opposite and started off slower before really gaining pace and getting exciting as it progressed. I loved this and I felt like I was swept away with the story.

I really liked the way that the beginning of the book started with some ambiguity and that small thing played on my mind throughout. I didn’t know which characters POV it was written from. Then it all tied together in the epilogue. I thought that this was a great touch.

Conclusion & Scoring 🎖

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The story was very engaging with lots of twists and turns and tension filled scenes and the narration totally did the writing justice. I hear there is a third book planned for this series and I cannot wait to read it.

In The Serial Killer's Daughter, author Alice Hunter crafts a taut, suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. When Jenny moves to a small village with her husband and young children, she is hoping to leave her dark past behind her. But when a girl who is tied to Jenny's husband goes missing, all eyes are on Jenny. Is she a cold-blooded killer like her father, or is someone else to blame?

I enjoyed the ride that is The Serial Killer's Daughter. Told from Jenny's point of view, we see her grapple with her past, her present, and the very real possibility that she could be a killer just like her father. The suspense is palpable, and Alice Hunter does a masterful job of keeping the reader guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book to fans of suspenseful crime thrillers.

I had no idea that this book was a sequel when I requested it, but given the similarity in title to the authors first book I probably should have put two and two together. It can definitely be enjoyed as a stand-alone book however and I didn’t feel any major plot lines were missing from having not read the first book.

This follows Jenny as she navigates life with a serial killer for a father. She has moved past her childhood trauma and has created herself a successful life but after dead animals keep turning up and she has night terrors and black outs following a local abduction, she is left wondering what the hell is going on.

I guessed the twist relatively early on but enjoyed the ending non the less.
Both narrators were enjoyable and I like the different voices for the different POVs.

Thank you for the chance to enjoy this ARC.

A terrific story, perfectly narrated.

This author might be new, but for a 2nd book I think she's amazing and will go far.
This one is as good as the first, no shock that I didn't work out the baddie until THAT page, I never do!!! What an ending as well - wow!

Hope to have a third book soon.

I want to thank the author, NetGalley and HarperCollins UK Audio

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced audiobook. While the first book in this series was really good, I felt the sequel fell flat. I found my attention roaming a lot of the time. After half the book, I finally went to the last hour to just hear who the kidnapper was. Ending was fairly predictable as well.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for approving me for an ARC of this book.

After reading the first in this series, The Serial Killer’s Wife, last year I was eager to see how this story would follow on. Whilst this book is part of a series it can be read as a standalone as enough of the previous book information is given to make you understand what happened previously.

Is murder in the blood? Are serial killer’s born or made? These are all questions that Jenny asks herself when a woman, connected to her husband, goes missing. Jenny suffers will blackouts and she has been experiencing them more and more recently so she can’t account for her whereabouts during those times.

Jenny is also hiding a secret from everyone, including her husband. Her father is currently serving life in prison as a prolific serial killer. Desperate to keep her childhood a secret Jenny escaped her control freak mother, changed her name and started a new life. However the disappearance of this woman seems very similar to her father’s murders and it’s starting to bring back some memories. Could Jenny be responsible?

I really enjoyed this story and listened to the audiobook over the course of a day. I was immediately drawn to Jenny and what she was going through. I honestly didn’t know whether I could trust her as a narrator or if she was truly innocent. Suffice to say there are lots of red herrings, misdirection’s and tension to keep the reader interested. Jenny herself makes some questionable choices, as does her husband.

Whilst I had figured out the final twist this didn’t take away the enjoyment at all. It was fun watching the breadcrumbs fall and seeing every thing come together.
