I’m disappointed with this latest book from Heidi Perks. The plot is without much substance and the main characters did not compensate for this. I didn’t sympathise with the characters nor did I find anyone likeable.

My thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the book and share my review. Hopefully, I’ll enjoy the author’s next book.

This was a fantastic holiday read, I got in to the story quickly and enjoyed the pace and the characters. I felt at times it was slightly dragged out but overall a very good read. Many thanks.

Laila and her husband have arrived for a much needed holiday in Greece. There are troubles in there marriage and they are struggling to conceive. Lying by the pool Laila's attention is drawn to Em. Married to a workaholic husband with two perfect boys. As Laila stares, Em finds the attention unnerving.
Then a few days into the holiday a body is found floating in the pool. As the police descend on the resort everyone is put under the microscope.
This book did a good job of developing the two female characters. It showed that there was more to the women than was seen on the surface. A perfect holiday read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC

The Other Guest is a fantastic mystery, perfect for summer reading!
I found Laila's character a little obsessive and weird but I suppose that was the point.

My Review
We meet Laila and her husband James in this story. A
relationship that seems very strained.
James has booked them on an expensive holiday to the Greek
island of Ixos.
Laila is understandably furious as she feels they needed the
money for more rounds of IVF treatment.
James feels they need to work on their relationship and maybe
now is the time to stop.
When the son of a young family is found dead in the swimming
pool of their hotel, their holiday becomes tense and fraught
with suspicion.
Laila feels concerned but seems to be going the wrong way of
showing it while James becomes secretive about what he is
doing on the island.
An extremely exciting read for Heidi Perks fans.
She creates a narrative that grabs your attention so easily. I
loved this one.

This is one to grab when you're going on holiday. It's easy to read and the twists keep it interesting. The first 100 pages are a little annoying where we keep getting hints of what happened last night ...it's somewhat overdone. Less can be more!

Laila and James are on holiday in a swanky resort in Ixos and there's a "perfect" family for Laila to people-watch. James is antsy all the time and Laila doesn't know why.

When one of the hotel guests is found floating, dead in the pool, everyone's secrets begin to come out of hibernation.

I have read other books from Heidi Perks and really liked them so I was excited to grab this one.
It started off great. Leila and her husband are on holiday after another failed IVF attempt and we also have Em and her family at the resort.
First off, I want to say Leila was creepy, who watches people that intently on holiday, surely you would want to relax and enjoy yourself.
Then the event happens.
Sadly, this fell flat from the even onwards. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters in this book and it did not hold my attention enough.
It was labelled as a thriller but seemed more like women’s fiction.

A great, twisty and fast paced book. I really enjoyed this thriller, and it definitely kept me guessing. Would have been 5 stars but I struggled to warm to any of the characters. I don't know if that was intentional with the nature of the story?
Would highly recommend to others, as I struggled to put it down.

The other guests was mainly narrated by Laila a women desperate for children and having had many failed IVF attempts. The holiday is booked so she thinks to reconnect with her husband but he has other reasons to be there.
Laila loves to people watch as we all do but White sands is a 5 star resort where the people watching turns into a murder.
I struggled to connect with the characters and found the story pretty slow in places. The ending wasn’t worth the time of reading the book.
However it is an excellently written story and well thought out characters. Worth a holiday read for definite.

'The Other Guest' is a very fast-paced thriller. It is told from different character perspectives which made it more enjoyable. It gripping and thrilling. Loved it.

The Other Guest by Heidi Perks is a holiday thriller set in White Sands, a luxury five star hotel resort.

Laila and her husband James are staying there, hoping to reconnect after some revelation has put their marriage under strain. They are also struggling to start a family, with Laila having completed several unsuccessful rounds of IVF.

Laila's habit of people-watching grates on James, but could it be the thing that puts them in the clear when a body is found in the pool?

There's a sort of comforting familiarity in the way this story is told. It's quite nostalgic to me, reminiscent of some old murder programmes I used to watch on TV - the setup is very back-and-forth, with each chapter ending with some kind of revelation that prompts us to go back over a previous timeline.

Unfortunately, this was the thing that began to grate on me as the story progressed - I just felt that the drip-feeding worked up to a point, and then it detracted from the main story.

It's definitely not a thriller, it's more of a mystery, and it plods along. If an unreliable narrator irks you, I would read a different book. For a beach/afternoon/holiday read, you could pick worse, but there are better ones out there.

Laila and her husband James are staying on an exclusive Greek island resort. James has booked the holiday as they have been going through unsuccessful IVF and felt they needed a break. Laila is obsessed with having a baby but James thinks they have gone through enough as it has put a strain on their marriage. Laila is a people watcher and soon becomes obsessed with one of the families at the resort. She feels very envious of Em, her husband and her two teenage boys Isaac and Theo. When a body is discovered in the pool Laila thinks she knows the truth about what has happened but realises that everyone is under suspicion. It soon becomes clear that Laila and James have been keeping secrets which are gradually revealed. I enjoyed this book and it would certainly make a perfect holiday read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was a holiday whodunnit read. I thoroughly enjoyed this and read it over a few hours. The plot is heavily centred on a number of holiday makers who’ve forked out a fortune to stay at a very expensive exclusive resort on a small island in Greece. During the book Heidi cleverly gives you more and more background on the key players, it’s fascinating as you will definitely form early opinions only to have that change over the course of the story.

It’s a book that speaks to us about why judgement of others can often be incredibly wrong. Who can you trust. The characters are all really interesting and there was a great amount of reveals and twists right to the end. I did not guess the final reveal but I was close if that counts!

The storyline weaves around events and each character and how they connect and relate to each other. You never really can know anyone it seems. As a disaster creates chaos and fear in the resort it ups the ante and the pace of the plot. I loved the way secrets just kept pouring from every main character. Skeletons in closets are actively falling out of sad cupboards. It tackles deep trust issues and the moments when you realise nothing is what you thought it was.

It was a great read and left me pondering what would I do in each pair of shoes. You’ll be stunned at times when you think you’ve got the picture and outcome sussed. The only reason is a sold 4 stars not 5 was that the police investigation could of been more realistic. There are things around that which would not happen and things missed that were obvious. Aside from that tiny thing it’s a great book to read on holiday but be very careful who you get to know on your holiday!

Wow what a read. Perfect sun lounger book I was gripped from
Start to finish. I would highly recommend this book.

I normally love everything that Heidi Perks touches, but unfortunately, I found this suspense, well, a little less suspenseful. It was rather slow going, and to be honest, it was harder to engage with all the characters. I wonder whether it was because the 'killer' was more obvious after all, and the ending didn't feel dramatic. This is a slow burner, and although I held on to the end, it didn't quite deliver in the way we'd usually expect from Heidi Perks.

Laila and her husband James are on holiday in Greece in the hope to recapture the early years of their marriage which has been under strain after many years of failed IVF treatment. When the body of one of the guests is found in the resort pool Laila is convinced she knows who is responsible but does she really know what happened or is she making assumptions?
Laila is definitely a people watcher to the point she spends more time trying to work out the dynamics of some of the other guests than she does on her own husband who also seems very preoccupied during the stay. It is the people watching aspect of her personality that I can relate to as I always find myself doing the exact same thing if I have too much time on my hands but that is where the similarity ends as I am not one for lounging by a pool all day and would much rather explore the places I visit. I can kind of understand her resentment of her husband who seems intent on doing things that exclude her and bring up events from his own past that do more harm than good and I often felt like I would dearly love to bang their heads together. With the secrets that you sensed they were both hiding I did wonder if the holiday would produce the results they had hoped for.
Laila and James were not the only ones with secrets and as we learned more about the family of the murdered boy you could see that there was a lot of tension between the two sons and even Laila suspected him of being up to no good.
I liked the way that the chapters were broken up between the aftermath of the body being found, the days that ran up to it and also going between Laila and Em (the mother of the victim). This gave me different perspectives and also more than one possible conclusion as to what actually happened. Although like the police you want to know what happened, the investigation took more of a back seat to this story as I felt it was more about the characters rather than what happened. The slower pace gives the reader the chance to discover that what we present on the surface may not be the whole story and that every action no matter how small can sometimes have devastating consequences.

It took me a while to get into, and I did nearly give up. But it was a good read anyway.

When a body is discovered in the luxury Greek resort plenty of twists and turns ensue as relationships, already fraught, are tested further. Everyone is a suspect with fingers pointing jot only for the murder but for a multitude of sins.
