The Old Man by Thomas Perry was excellent and I was gripped from the beginning till the end. Plus, this is the first time I have read anything from this author and I love the way he writes. and looking forward reading more from tis author in the future. I am so glad I had a chance to read The Old Man and i highly recommend it. The series was also good but the book was 100 times better.

This is an excellent thriller from the author. Dan Chase appears to be an elderly man out walking his two dogs, but appearances can be deceptive. I really liked the characterisation in this read, at times I even felt quite emotional as I discovered more about Dan's life. There is plenty of action, suspense and a gripping plot which kept me engrossed right to the end. This is a really good summer read, which I highly recommend, and would make a brilliant movie, filled with excitement and drama. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

I understand (but have not seen) The Old Man is a major tv series starring Jeff Bridges in the title role of the old man, Dan Chase - a quiet unassuming 60 year old with a dark secret and hidden skills. Having read the book now I can see why it would be optioned for TV - it has all the elements of action and it is clear how it would work in an episodic structure. The book itself makes a reference/ comparison to Jason Bourne, and this is, to some degree, Jason Bourne a long time ago.... a highly skilled operative being chased by the authorities and having to rely on his wits and training to avoid them. The fact he does so (could this be considered a spoiler? I hope and think not) so easily so often - his consummate skills being so superior, could be what stopped this being a complete success for me. At no time did I ever feel a sense of suspense or danger. The final act would, in a mission taken on by Jack Reacher or Evan Smoak or similar action heroes be ramped up in terms of action description. Here the author seems to dial it back to straight forward descriptive prose. Iv'e read Thomas Perry before and he is a fine writer - so this is not a question that he 'couldn't' write in that style, and presumably an author's choice to write it in this way.
Stephen King says this one is 'an absolute flamethrower' and the NY TImes Book Review says it's 'a harrowing hunt-and-hide adventure . . . Nobody writes chase scenes like Perry' So maybe it's just me that felt the multiple chase scenes while logically and cleverly written were almost more procedural in the fascinating they were described than 'bullet paced' (as described elsewhere in the blurb.
All in all I found it a quick, interesting enough read - but for a change, I think the dramatization of it may be even more interesting than the book.
Thank you to the publishers and netgalley for the opportunity to read in return for an honest review.

I’ve got to be honest, I can’t quite remember the last time I’ve read a book from this genre. This is a police procedural novel, a really gritty, fast paced storyline. Anything involving a government that abandons you, you know there’s going to be a complex well thought out character fronting it.
To say I’ve not read one of these for a while, I found it refreshing and certainly gave what it promised in the box.
I’d highly recommend this book.

This an entertaining, fast paced procedural thriller. Dan Chase is the old man. A man with secrets, but you wouldn’t recognise that if you met him. He has gone out of his way to blend into the background. But now his past is sneaking up on him and the American government have decided it’s time to find Dan Chase and take him out. They are going to find this is a lot more difficult then they expect. If you are a fan of this genre you’ll love it. Trying something new? Then this would be a good place to start. Thanks to Atlantic Books and NetGalley for letting me read an ARC. The views expressed are all mine freely given.

The Old Man by Thomas Perry is a must read novel.

💭If you love James Bond type of thrillers, this one is definitely for you. I have read no other books by the author in the past, but this one makes me want to change that soon.

An ex government officer, now retired, but living his life simply in plain sight, is now implicated in a chase of life and death. The fast action never ceases in here from the first chapter to the last.

I loved we get to see another side of the main character as well, the one where he is a father and shows how much his daughter means to him.

The chase is unbelievable in some parts, but so well described that I really felt like being next to Dan and going through the same emotions and frustrations.

I can't wait to watch it on the screens now.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley.

Thanks to Thomas and NetGalley for allowing me to read The Old Man prior to the publication date.
This is an all action thriller which would probably make a good film.

Abandoned by his government, 60 year old Dan Chase has been hiding in plain site for decades.
Yet he has an escape bag, including documentation for 4 new identities, ready should he ever need it.
That same government who abandoned him decades ago are now helping a team of Libyan fighters to track down and kill him.
To their cost, they underestimated Dan, the body count starts to rise and the roller coaster action begins as Dan uses all his skills to thwart his enemies
