I couldn’t get into this book or the characters. I couldn’t understand how n English girl in Germany can run after her boyfriend while he’s fighting with the Allies.

Loved this one! In March 1940 Laura boards a ship and travels through the torpedoed waters of the Mediterranean to chase after Harry whom she has fallen in love with. He was out in Uganda, but has joined up to fight with the King’s African Rifles.

Will she succeed in her quest?

Strong-willed and proudly independent, she has many dramatic life-changing upheavals to face on the way to Uganda and beyond.

Love at War is based on a true story, the loves, dramas and losses of a resourceful, exceptional girl.

This is a strange book to me. The first two thirds of the story, I felt like I was being told the story by someone who had heard it from someone else. I’m sorry if that doesn’t make sense but that’s my feelings. There was no passion or soul in it for me. It was just a story. The last third of the book, was a lot better. So much that I almost gave four stars for my rating. Laura is the heroine of the book. She thinks she knows what she wants from life but when she gets it, she’s not real satisfied. She is always reaching for the next best thing. When I finished the book, I skimmed through the author’s notes in “Acknowledgements “. I read where she thanked a man who had entrusted her with some files of his parents’ wartime letters. The author thanks this gentleman and his wife with their patience and support. I think if I had read that first I might have read the book differently and given it a higher rating. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy for my honest review.

Good World War II love story that kept my attention. The flow was good throughout the story and the characters were well written. I will read other work by this author since this was my first.
