I really enjoyed this book, it's a fast pace well developed mystery with very witty and interesting set of characters.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Mark Elstob, who does a great job giving each character a very distinct voice. I would definitely listen to more audiobooks narrated by him.

A man is killed in cold blood outside the old bailey. There are witnesses and he has admitted he did it. But when the man he killed is a notorious gangster and not many people are upset he is gone, it's now time for some of the gangsters to help someone get away with murder.

This was an unusual narrative that intrigued me from start to finish, with great individual characters who each give a unique personality to this book.

This is not a novel I have come across before and one I really enjoyed.

I will be looking out for more by Milner.

What a great read! Funny, twisty, suspenseful and so well round up in the end, oh, and the narrator was incredible. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun but interesting audiobook.
Thanks for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.

I loved seeing how the diverse group of characters within this book were all connected. A great summing up at the end to explain what happened to the characters.

A Veritable Romp…
Highly entertaining, wittily done account of high jinks in a murder trial. The Old Bailey will never be the same again. Narration is excellent throughout and brings to life a plot peppered with often wildly eccentric characters and sparky dialogue. A veritable romp.

The case seems pretty straightforward, man shoots other man in front of the court, man confesses, man gets put on trial. Then why would a secret benefactor pay the six figure bill for the legal defence?

Fast paced story, but not too fast. The narrator gave each character its own voice, which made listening very enjoyable.

Fun court crime thriller. A murder outside the Old Bailey, the murderer waits to be arrested and says I did it. What sort of a defence could there possibly be? That’s part of the story here with interesting characters and lots of humour. But there is a lot of philosophy under the cover about life chances and the affect this has on the person we become. Thank you to W F Howes Ltd and NetGalley for the audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Murder at the Bailey is a fast paced, addictive read that tells the tale of a notorious loan shark who is killed in plain sight at the Old Bailey. Readers are treated to the full courtroom experience as the trial progresses and we meet numerous excellent characters as the drama unfolds along the way.

There are SO many characters in this book! Ordinarily that would make it tricky for me to follow, however, they are so expertly characterised that I feel as though I know them all. I love a legal drama, so I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found it to be a quick and easy read.

The narrator was excellent and I loved that he did so many different voices and accents, it really made the audiobook for me.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

Henry Milner is, it seems, not only an excellent barrister but a gifted and entertaining writer. I’ve just finished his autobiography which was excellent and was delighted to find he’s now turned his hand to fiction.

Murder at the Bailey us the story of the defence of an individual who shot a loan shark right outside the Old Bailey. It’s a straightforward story of the case; we know the crime, the criminal and there’s no mystery. But where Milner excels is in the creation of characters and dialogue. This book is superbly narrated, with every nuance captured and each character given a distinct and unique voice.

It’s filled with oddities. There are touches of Rumpole in the defence barrister, but he is very much his own creation. Stanford is the defence lawyer and he comes up against his old adversary, CS Iron rod Stokes. Stanford is clever, witty, charming ( to a point) and memorable. Stokes is hard nosed and desperate for a conviction. This story is very much character driven but filled with insight into the justice system. It’s entertaining and I really enjoyed it. More please from Mr Milner. Another courtroom romp is eagerly awaited.

My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley.

Not exactly what I was expecting. From the blurb, and the fact it’s written by a top criminal defence lawyer, I was expecting to hear more of a procedural-style novel when it felt more akin to listening to something trying to be like a Radio 4 dramatisation of Rumpole of the Bailey. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the aforementioned radio dramas, but they’re set in the past and this is a modern novel yet it felt pretty dated. I didn’t particularly enjoy the narration either, the pace of the storytelling was ok, but the accents of the characters felt too much like caricaturisation rather than genuine.
This audiobook sadly is not for me.

With thanks to the author, publishers W.F. Howes, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

The author uses his experience as a criminal lawyer to great effect in this book, to provide a wonderfully witty insight into the goings on in a murder trial at the Old Bailey, both in the courtroom and behind the scenes. We also get a fascinating and entertaining window into the criminal underworld with its levels of authority, and how business is done there. The plot is well woven, while the characters on both sides of the law are well developed with their good and bad points. The dialogue is lively and entertaining throughout, and is only enhanced by the wonderful performance of the narrator Mark Elstob. Overall very enjoyable, and hopefully the author has some more gems like the sleeve of his barrister’s robe.

I really enjoyed Murder at the Bailey, I was hoping for an audiobook I could enjoy during a busy day at work and this was it! I loved the narration, though I did get bored here and there it was a wonderful listen!

Firstly this audiobook was superbly narrated by Mark Elstob, the way he narrated the characters made this book so much better, you can tell Henry Milner has worked as a criminal lawyer and he has written a good novel using his expertise, I have to say there are times when it got a little dull especially during the trial scenes (I hope I never get called for jury duty) but the narrator kept it up beat and enjoyable. I loved this book and I look forward to more from this author and please keep Mark as the narrator.

I received this in audiobook format which worked extremely well for this novel. In my head I could visualise this as a film something like the 1960s 'Two Way Stretch' with all the great and good of the British acting talent at the time. I am not sure if it was meant to be but it had a rather droll comic air about it, maybe in part, to the narrator. I did enjoy it very much. Thanks to Netgalley.
