A beautiful book for children that love horses. A child that loves horses will love this book because they can learn the basics of how to take care of a horse. Facts about riding a horse. Children can daydream about having a horse and taking care of it and riding it. The author appears to be very knowledgable about horses and their care.

This book is a fun read that discusses some of the basics regarding horses and riding for younger readers. It includes many facts but also some fun, creative things such as a quiz at the beginning. According to the quiz, I was “certifiably horse crazy” growing up, and now I only have a “high fever” (I passed on my horse toys and wall art long ago).

The information in this work covers a wide range of horse-related topics. Details about coloration of horses, the names of their different markings, using “hands” as measurement, and riding styles are included among much other information. There were helpful illustrations depicting certain topics (such as tack required or a horse’s gait), and there were also pictures labeled underneath certain discussions as examples.

There are some errors such as sentence fragments and extra punctuation, so another round of editing would be good. I’d like to give it a higher rating, but due to how little text there was in the book, I would expect there to be no errors. I also would have liked to see a bit more information (e.g., stable setup or requirements, paddock requirements, maintaining a clean stable, etc.) incorporated to round out this work as I feel that there are some important topics relating to horses left unaddressed. The formatting for the e-book was also made it almost impossible to read on my kindle or in the app.

Overall, I still would have loved this book when I was young, and I recommend it for those who have horse-obsessed children in their lives. My thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for allowing me to read and review this work.

Thanks to #NetGalley, #HorseridingHub, #DebbieBurgermeister, HorseloversFirstBook. I think this book is essential for the child who is seriously getting a horse. The child and parents must read and understand all the work involved to taking care of a horse. Not nearly as easy as changing a litter box or walking the dog. This is hard work,, daily. Not for the timid.

Horse Lovers First Book is a well organized little informational book for horse crazy kids just learning about their favourite animal. Printed on a pink background, this one will appeal mostly to little girls, but if the boys don't mind the colour, the contents are perfect for everyone. All of the information contained inside is paired with helpful photos and illustrations, and the reading level is appropriate for kids aged 8-10 and up, or younger for advanced readers.

Overall, coming from a horse-crazy 34 year old who has yet to grow out of reading everything I can find about horses, the information in this book seems both accurate and more in-depth than I expected for a children's first horse book. There's information about breeds and categories of horses, colours, gaits, care, etc.

I do have a couple of nit-picky critiques on small issues that do not at all effect the readability of the book or the value of the information for young kids just learning about the subject, but which stood out to me as an adult reader with in-depth horse knowledge. First, some of the grammar choices imply odd things. On page 11, which discusses some popular horse breeds, the bubble at the top of the page says "The popular breeds are..." and goes on to include two breeds that pretty much don't exist outside of Australia and New Zealand. "The popular breeds" implies that the world's horse lovers were surveyed and this is the definitive list, but if you cross over to Europe or North America it's entirely possible you'll find horse enthusiasts who've never heard of the Waler, for example. I have, but that's only because I set out to learn about "rare" breeds as a teenager. (For reference, I'm Canadian.) Second, white vs grey: I love that Dominant White/White Spotting is introduced in this book, but grouping it with grey is confusing. These are completely different genes doing different things and a horse that becomes "white" due to greying is not the same as a horse born white due to a dominant white KIT mutation. I wouldn't be pedantic on that in a kid's if the example photo chosen was, say, a W2 Thoroughbred or a W4 Camarillo White Horse that are "all white" but the example photo is GQ Santana, the origin of the W10 mutation in Quarter Horses, and looks very much like an interaction between leopard complex and splash or tobiano. This is the sort of thing the equally horse-crazy elder siblings of this book's young readers will point out as "wrong."

This book will delight children who love horses. It is packed with information, photos, and illustrations. The sections are organized by questions. Some of these include:

What is the difference between a horse and a pony?

How do I know if my horse is happy?

Do horses need grooming?

How do horses sleep? and more.

I enjoyed how the author invited her young readers in by having a quiz called “Are you horse crazy? Those who are will recognized the signs. Young riders should enjoy spending time in these pages.

Many thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this title. All opinions are my own.

I immediately flashed back in time to the horse crazy girl I once was when I saw this cover. Quite frankly, based on the cover, I was expecting a cartoon type book. I was pleasantly surprised to find within a mix of adorable drawings and actual photos used to illustrate the points of the story. I will note, however, that the focus seemed to be on using English tack. Although I ultimately competed in English equestrian type events, I grew up either bareback or with Western gear. That said, the info within is basic and both explained and illustrated. While it wasn't quite what I'd expected, it does deliver the basics such as parts of a horse and tack, not to mention breeds, measurements and color, as well as answers questions about what horses eat, how to tell if your horse is happy, and such. Not quite sure what the target age is but will guess upper elementary since much of the information would require reading skills over a much younger child's ability. A good chance for a parent to be involved, of course, as they read and discuss the information.

I had to wonder, however, if the average horse-crazy kid had the access to trainers and instructors as the author seems to have grown up with and based much of the book on that assumption. That doesn't mean the book is wrong, that would be the ideal, but would have liked to have seen more for the average beginner, English or Western style. That said, thanks to #NetGalley and #BooksGoSocial for the fun time traveling back to my horse crazed youth. Fun.
