I've heard so many great things about this series so was thrilled when I got accepted. I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters, the atmosphere and the writing was fantastic. Would definitely recommend.

I think this ship sailed too long ago and has since been replaced by much prettier, shinier and Jack Sparrow infested ships of grander design. With rum, naturally.

I think when it was written this was probably a lot of fun and I probably would have enjoyed it more at that age too. But now that we are so inundated with fantastic, hugely fleshed out and intricately designed fantasy, this just felt so plain. The writing style also didn’t help with that particular issue because although it is intentionally YA, it feels like it’s been written for a school project rather than a publishable book; the writing is just too simple and deliberate.

The story has exceptional pacing - you can read it easily in 3 to 4 hours, given the time, because it is such a page turner. It’s the sort of book you can just race through because of the fun dialogue, great pacing and outrageous (in a good way!) characters. The protagonist isn’t likeable, she isn’t really meant to be, and whilst this didn’t work for me (it felt like a watered down version of Celaena Sardothian having a bad day!) it did work for a lot of readers.

Fun idea, really compelling but just misses the mark in such a huge, brilliant market now.

As I've loved Pirates since Johnny Depp left the mast of his borrowed boat in The Curse of the Black Pearl when I saw this book on here I knew I had to have it.

This was a fantastic YA debut with such a strong main character, such a refreshing change from the Damsel in distress we normally see in Pirate-related things.

The slow-burn romance was fabulous and can't wait for more. Yay for no love triangles in this.

Looking forward to reading book 2.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

Alosa is the daughter of the ruthless Pirate King, and a notable pirate captain in her own right. As her father's heir, she's the only one he trusts to find and steal one third of an ancient hidden map. Allowing herself to be captured by her enemies, she works to escape her captors and find the map, before reaching her father, right on plan. However, as much as she can best the pirate crew, her main captor, first mate, Riden, is keeping an extremely close eye on her, and Alosa finds she doesn't mind it.

From the first few pages in Daughter of the Pirate King, I knew this was a book for me. Alosa was such a feisty and strong character, who used her knowledge, and her powers, to gain what she wants. That's not to say she's not vulnerable too, though. Because of her parentage and her upbringing, she has weaknesses, and Alosa doesn't ever allow anyone to see them. Even so, when she's with Riden, parts of her true self come out, and they both reveal aspects of themselves that they would never expect. I did work out some of the twists before the big 'reveals' but all in all, a really good YA book. Roll on book 2!

This was a fun read - quick and easy. A little repetitive at times, but overall enjoyable. Who doesn't love a tale of a pirate princess out on a dangerous adventure.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book to review.

I really enjoyed this book - it’s a fun swashbuckling adventure following Alosa, the daughter of the Pirate King. It was fast paced and really easy to like the main character. Although it was a little predictable at times, it still managed to keep me gripped and I will definitely be reading book two!

Many Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing the digital review copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This is a fun, swashbuckling high-seas adventure, perfect for young adults looking for a bit of escapism. I loved the main character Alosa, she was exactly what I imagined a young female pirate to be, full of bravado and arrogance. The plot is a little predictable, but this didn’t distract from the pace and setting of the book.

I would highly recommend this YA book! It's wonderfully paced and you will fall in love with Alosa. As soon as I finished reading this, I had to pick up the next book!

This book is so so good! I absolutely loved The Shadows Between Us and was so excited when I learned Levensellers books were making their way to the UK! DOTPK defo lived up to my expectations!

4/5

This was really enjoyable! I loved Alosa - there were times where her confidence felt a bit too much like arrogant, but at the same time, I completely understand it. There is a fantastical element to this book, which is shown throughout, but somehow gets ramped up A LOT at the halfway mark, and there's no real explanation for it. You don't expect it to suddenly go that way, so I think that needed to be threaded through the story a little more.

That being said, I loved the story and the characters. Riden was a great character, very conflicted with lots of potential for development. Lots of fun relationships, plenty of drama and changing sides. The ending sets up the second book quite well - not quite a cliffhanger, more... a wall. And you have to find the door and decide if you actually want to go through it.

DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING was such a fun swashbuckling adventure! I love "boat books" and this one ticked all the boxes for me. Almost all the time aboard a ship (and a well described ship that you knew had a large crew even if you only saw a few key people.) A story connected intimately to the water and life above and below it (particularly through Alosa's siren heritage).

I also liked that these were very vicious pirates. They are stealing from one another, more than happy to hurt people they come across in physical and sexual ways to show their dominance (there is no physical sexual assault on the page, but there are several pirates who make it very clear they'd liked to do so to Alosa.) They enact an actual pirate punishment. The pirate part of this book is not just an aesthetic for people who are out to help people (which is quite common in pirate books I've found) - these are vicious people going after merchants and one another.

Alosa is also a main character who has a vicious streak and is allowed to be such. I wouldn't say she's an "unlikeable" character, but she is uncompromisingly hard at times, and it's never written in such a way to be more "acceptably feminine and soft and only because she's got no choice." She chooses to be tough and mean and seductive and a whole host of other things out of many options on the table.

There is plenty of action in the book, as well as people outsmarting one another. No one is sure who they can trust (but a few you absolutely know can't be trusted!) It makes the "I am on my own with no one on side" attitude that Alosa has feel appropriate (and it shown to be true later on.)

I am very much looking forward to diving right into the next book in the duology.

It’s not often that you find a book that does exactly what it says it will.

The most fun and action packed YA novel I’ve read in a while. I was instantly sucked into Alosa’s world and the characters were all written so beautifully I felt fully invested in everyone’s fate. Although at times it was a little predictable this actually didn’t take away from the experience- I actually found myself enjoying the reveal more knowing I had spotted the clues throughout.

The romance in the novel was spot on - enough to keep you invested but not so much that it ruined the main plot.

If you’re looking for a fun book to make you forget you’re even reading, look no further!

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller is a young adult fantasy story set in the pirate world.
Yeah, you heard me right - this book is about pirates. Unexpected. But grumpy men with swords on ships sometimes are not enough to make a great story. You will need a good heroine too. And there is the problem. Alosa is perfect, she is super smart, beautiful, and strong. No one can beat her. I know this book is for teenagers, but I can not stand her. In my opinion, at the moment when you can not connect to the main character, the whole story is lost. I did not find worldbuilding and the entire plot original enough to conquer it.
I am really grateful to the NetGalley and the Pushkin Press for the eARC, but I can not give this book more than 3*. Nevertheless, the cover is stunning and the graphic part of this is gorgeous.

Alosa is the titular Daughter of the Pirate King and her father has sent her on a mission to locate and retrieve an elusive map. Her father is in possession of one part of the map but the other two were harder to come by.

So a plan is hatched and Alosa is 'kidnapped' by the crew of the sons of the maps original owner. We have the Captain, Draxen, and his brother Riden who both (in their own ways) attempt to use Alosa to bribe her father but they are not privy to her true intentions behind staying on board.

Alosa must find the map and get off the ship and back to her father, all without getting caught or revealing why she is really there.

I loved Alosa, she's a sassy main character and has learned, from being a female pirate when most are males, just what she needs to do to get what she wants and survive.

Can't wait for book two and so glad I have it right there after that ending!

Red-haired and stubborn Princess Alosa is an only child of King Kalligan, the Pirate King. She has a mission to fulfill and doesn't want to let her father down, a critical mission, an impossible mission, she should be caged at the enemy's ship, then capture it after finding an ancient map!

The map is a part of three pieces of an old map that show the way to Isla de Canta (also called the Land of the Singing Women), an island heaped with untold treasure and protected by its magical occupants, the SIRENs. Each piece separated long ago and dispersed to the three pirate lords of the time, then was passed down from father to son for generations. One is for King Kalligan, the other for Vordan and the last one belongs to Jeskor who died and now probably is in his sons’ hands, Alosa wants to take it from Draxen and Riden who may even not know about the map.

“I am mostly human. But when I allow myself to use the gifts my mother gave me, I become something else. And it kills me a little inside each time I have to fight it back off.”

A romantic fantasy on the sea, I liked the plot and characters, enjoyed the story and suspense, a fun read and am already starting the second book, Daughter of the Siren Queen.

“I think you’re acting like a jealous husband.”
“A what?”
“You know, men that women shackle themselves onto.”
“Yes, I know what a husband is.”

Many thanks to Pushkin Press via NetGalley for giving me a chance to read the first book of Daughter of the Pirate King, I have given my honest review.

I absolutely loved this book! Alosa’s character is one of the most compelling I have read for ages - fierce, witty, clever, and carrying around a whole lot of secrets and trauma, I was rooting for her immediately. A page-turning, action packed adventure full of swoon-worthy romance and a whole cast of characters you will love. I bought the second book immediately and it was just as satisfying. A new favourite.

Oooohhhhh I loved loved loved this! I don't think I've ever read a Tricia Levenseller book I didn't enjoy, but I'm frustrated with myself that I have waited this long to read this one!

We had pirates, sirens, FEMALE pirates, strong women, romance, witty comments and a fab start to what I hope will be an exciting duology!

I absolutely loved A & R - I loved how the book ended and I really loved the world TL has built. I read this one with NetGalley.
