Family drama where two sisters take on rescue their cousin. Turns out to be not quite so straightforward. Well developed characters and a good story.

I’ve never read anything by Josephine Cox before but I know she’s a well loved author. I was excited to get into this book and I wasn’t disappointed. It was beautifully written and the characters just leaped from the pages and slotted into my life like they were real. This will not be the last I read from this author. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for a chance to read and review this book.

The Letter ⭐️⭐️⭐️

When sisters Bella and Alice receive a letter from their younger cousin asking them to rescue her from the care of her cruel aunt and uncle they welcome her into the home which they share with their widowed father.

But is Millie just in need of some love and guidance, or have they bitten off more than they can chew?

This was a nice, gentle family drama. It has hints of darker forces going on, and it may have been done intentionally but I think it was a shame that this wasn’t taken further or really explained.

Many thanks to @net for the advanced copies

What a delightful book. Josephine Cox certainly knows what her readers want and delivers every time. Such an easy read with some good but not too many characters.
Such a sad loss to the book world.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. xx

Having read Josephine's previous books, I was excited to read this latest one but unfortunately it just irritated me rather than engrossed me. The repeated use of the word "mebbe" instead of "maybe" in the first few chapters was enough to put me off as it was such an infuriating distraction. I understand wanting to denote a character's accent to create a more vivid portrayal but it was just too much.

I enjoyed this emotionally-resonant novel dealing with an orphaned girl who claims she is being abused by the aunt and uncle who took her in. Her cousins go to rescue her and there is some question as to the truthfulness of her claims. This is a well-done family drama.

Families should stick together which is exactly what Alice, Bella and their dad do when they find out their cousin Millie is being abused by their aunt and uncle when they took her in after both of her parents were killed in a car crash.
Millie goes to live with them but everything is not what it seems with Millie as strange things happen when people do things she doesn't like.
A fab read as always

I have followed and read Josephine's books for many years and this one is another beautiful book. Emotional and sad but an excellent book.

This was.a good read but, I disliked the daughter immensely. She seemed spoilt and very uncaring. The story was good and I will be reading more by Josephine in the future. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Bella can't wait to be married to her fiancée Sydney, and dreams of the day she will walk up the aisle to be given away by her widowed father, with her bookish sister Alice as her bridesmaid. Their lives are disturbed when they receive a letter from their fourteen-year-old cousin Millie. Taken in by her austere aunt and uncle when her parents were killed in an accident, Millie says she is being badly treated and pleads to be rescued. When the two sisters take a trip to find out the truth, things take a troubling turn.

I'm a huge fan of Josephine Cox. Her books are so easy to read. This is a heartwarming read, but it has its moments of sadness too. After receiving a letter from their cousin Millie, Bella and her sister Alice take a trip to find out what was exactly going on at their aunt and uncles house. They bring Millie home with them. The characters are well developed, mostly likable and believable. The pace is steady. I was hooked after reading a few pages. What exactly was going on with Millie? I had to keep reading to find out. Even though this book was 400 pages long, it didn't feel like it. It's so well written and the storyline was addictive. Another fabulous read by the late Josephine Cox.

It was lovely to see that there was a new Josephine Cox book available that has been published posthumously with the help of Gilly Middleton.

This novel is definitely in the author's traditional mould, set in the 1950s in a seaside town and dealing with an orphaned girl and family feuds. I found the characters to be well drawn: you root for some and want others to get their comeuppance! The ending was very satisfying in that regard. There is also an element of the supernatural in this book that is never fully resolved and this could have been developed even further.

I really enjoyed reading The Letter and would give it a strong four stars! Thank you very much to NetGalley and the publisher for a free advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

After a family tragedy Millie goes to live with family. When things don’t work out for her she writes to her cousins asking them to come rescue her. There is some doubt cast as to wether Millie is completely blameless!
Millie starts to adapt to life with her uncle Thomas and daughters Alice and Bella, after having had an unconventional upbringing.
Millie goes through this story like a tornado. Loved it.
