This book is absolutely fantastic, I laughed all the way through and I didn't want it to end. I loved the twists within the book too.

Mother Hens was such a fun and enjoyable read. Following our group of relatable (and slightly chaotic) mums on a hen party to Ibiza.

I loved the characters in the book and lots of it really gave me the same vibe as the movie 'Bridesmaids'.

I do think the plot may be a little marmite, at points it was just insanely ridiculous (fun and had me gasping), but totally off the wall. Overall I enjoyed this however as we got to the twist at the end of the book I did find myself struggling to get fully on board.

Unfortunately I really couldn't get in to this book or finish it which was a huge disappointment. I love Sophie McCartney, have followed her for years since I found her first parodies about 8 years ago and find her very funny and was looking forward to some highly amusing escapement with this book. Unfortunately I found the characters and story just didn't gel with me and I couldn't relate to them enough to finish the book. Sorry Sophie not for me but I'll carry on following your highly amusing instagram which often makes me laugh out loud!

The download date was unfortunately missed, I would be happy to re-review if it became available again. I have awarded stars for the book cover and description as they both appeal to me.

I was looking forward to this one but it just don’t work for me.
It was funny in places but sometimes a bit too crude for me.
Also felt like two different genres of book rolled into one. So what started out fun and believable quickly turned into a crazy caper that just felt very over the top.
I can see how this would appeal to a lot of people unfortunately just not one for me.

Funny from start to finish! A rollercoaster of emotions, full of fantastic characters. Every group of 'Mum friends' out there will be able to relate to the Flab Four - the sleep deprived mum, the slightly out there - dancing to her own tune mum, the married mum, the single mum, the mum who mostly has her life together and the mum who is furiously trying to juggle everything while trying not to completely loose the plot!

Sophie has once again provided us with an easily readable novel to take to the beach this summer, not quite as good as her first but still enjoyable

Sophie’s first book Tired and Tested was one of my favourite reads last year. Mother Hens is her debut fiction title and be prepared to laugh your head off! Suspend reality and dive into a story that is equally hilarious and shocking with moments of absolute embarrassment for the protagonist Cara thrown in for good measure.

Cara isn’t having an easy life. Recently divorced from the creepy Dom, she’s left to fend for herself and her two young kids. Dragged to her friend Jen’s hen do, things get crazy fast. Four friends, three nights in Hedonistic Ibiza ending with an unplanned trip to Las Vegas, what could possibly go wrong?

Sophie’s first fiction title has a lot going on- cheating husbands, running from a cult, drug dealers, a murder… but somehow Sophie brings it all together with her characteristic wit, one-liners and zany sense of humour. Prepare for puns galore! This is a story about friendship and doing whatever it takes to get a friend out of a dark time in their lives. I immediately detested Dom (the weasel) and Cara’s mother is a piece of work too (don’t get me started about Cara’s younger stepsister!) A chaotic story that pulls at all the emotions, Sophie’s Mother Hens is Mums on Tour meets The Inbetweeners.

Mother Hens is out now. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperNorth for the arc. 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this first novel from Sophie McCartney. I follow her on Instagram so I’ll admit I did struggle not to picture herself and her husband as Cara and Dom, especially as the narration is so similar to Sophie’s own voice, however once I got past that I enjoyed the wild ride. It is a completely bonkers story, but perfect for a holiday read when you just want to suspend disbelief.

My only gripe is that I felt sometimes McCartney goes a bit heavy on the puns/one liners. This works on Instagram but not so much in a novel.

Mother Hens, Sophie McCartney

Cara’s best friend is getting hitched and she is going on tour! Hitting the sun soaked streets on Ibiza and trading her mum lifestyle for pina colada’s. With an awful ex and a horrible family this holiday could be just what she asked for or it could push the limits of what can really go wrong when the rules are bent and the stakes are high.

Coming in from InstaMum Tired n Tested this is a laugh a second fiction debut. Sophie had already proven herself a hysterical writer with her non fiction debut but this hilarious story about Mums going wild is brilliant.

This felt like a very busy book. Lots of jokes. I did find it funny but I also found it a bit chaotic. I thought that it was still fairly easy to read. It was an OK read and good for a duvet novel. I feel that quite a few of my friends would enjoy this book as a summer/beach read.

I follow Sophie on Instagram and find her very funny. Therefore had no hesitation in requesting her first non-fiction book. The book took me a while to get on board as I could not stop thinking that Cara is not Sophie and Cara husband Dom in the book is not Steve her husband.... I liken it to going to watch Dirty Dancing the musical and your brain takes a while to readjust to it not being exactly like the movie.

The story is chaotic and very busy, I do feel as though Sophie crammed in as many jokes/90's references as she could in pretty much every other sentence. However this is Sophie, on insta she is very quick witted and it came through in her writing.

I did not love the book and I confess I did skim read it towards the end, it was just too busy and there was not much depth to the main characters at all. This book is not for me. However I would be keen to read her next book to try again.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the copy in return for my honest review.

I had very high hopes for this book being a fan of the author on social media. As a first fiction book for her it was ok. Felt a bit slow in places but overall it was a good read.

After reading the synopsis of this one I was looking forward to reading. However it fell a bit flat for me. I wouldn't say it was a bad read I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought i was going too.

Anything Goes..
Madcap mums on tour to Ibiza - what could possibly go wrong? Well, pretty much everything really. As four friends travel to an island where seemingly anything goes, anything and everything will go wrong. Funny and often heartfelt with much humour, wacky word play and mind boggling situations - we have to wonder if any of these women will ever make it back.

Well written, funny and emotional read. Felt the story was excellent until about 3/4 through when it became completely unbelievable which I wasn't keen on.

I’m a fan of Sophie on social media and find her quite amusing so I did have high hopes for this book. Unfortunately it didn’t quite hit the mark for me, the humour had a sort of scattergun approach and the witty puns that work well on reels didn’t translate very well in writing. I also found it quite slow. The premise is a good one, a mother juggling the highs and lows of life grabbing life with both hands on a hen do in Ibiza, but the execution wasn’t quite there for me.

A fast paced comedy romp involving Cara and her yummy mummy friends.
Cara is newly separated from cheating husband, Dom, when she is dragged by her friends to Jac’s Hen Do in Ibiza
They get into hilarious escapades, including unexpectedly bumping into her estranged mother and sister in an upmarket hotel

I felt the book had a bit of a Bridget Jones vibe about it
It was an enjoyable enough read with some laugh out loud bits
But the gimmicky style and lewd puns got a bit predictable and I thought the ending was a bit weak

Thanks Netgalley and HarperNorth for allowing early access to review

What a read!

I follow Sophie on Instagram, find her entertaining and realistic so was intrigued to read her first piece of fiction. I wrongly presumed it would be a funny, mum take on chick lit... Oh I was so wrong! I'm not sure what you'd categorise the book as other than brilliant, funny and witty.

The book is pure entertainment; Cara Carmichael's life is absolutely turned upside down by her cheating husband. For reasons I don't share (font want to give any spoilers!) She's devastated and she her friends drag her to Ibiza for a hen party, her heart just isn't in it.... But then suddenly she's in the middle of a situation she'd never even dreamt of.

Full of absolute twists and turns, the story is funny, witty and surprising. It's full of hilarious characters, cringe worthy moments so believable you wonder if it really is fiction, and a brilliant ending that left me feeling fully satisfied and also chortling. The plot is a bit bonkers, but it works entirely, I read the whole book with a smile on my face.... brilliant!
