In a departure from his previous historical thrillers, this time Smith centres his adventure in the present day, with the onset of an alien invasion. A command for all of humanity to relocate to Antarctica;, perhaps in a nod to global warming and our climate catastrophe; witnesses a desperate evacuation with futile trips for many as the deadline passes.
Aside from the set up, this novel should not be mistaken for a science fiction story, rather it is an exploration of the hubris of man and their mistaken belief that they can best and manipulate mother nature without consequence.
Fast paced and compelling.
