3/5 stars, I really loved reading about Egyptian gods
Thank you to Pleasure & Power Publishing for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
Reading about the mythology of other cultures has always been one of my favorite parts of reading, especially when it's similar to Greek/Roman mythology. There is a severe lack of Egyptian mythology in my opinion in the literary world, so I always get excited when I see a book written around this mythology. While seeing so many names and characters from this mythology was lots of fun, it was hard at times to remember. There was context given sometimes but also I feel like not enough time to really absorb all the characters.
The plot in general of this book was largely centered around the romance between Onia and Ra, which I knew going into this story. It was pretty fast-moving after the 50% mark, but before that, all that really occurred was them making their way through the desert. Which was fine, but there was a such fast attraction between them it was a little unbelievable. Their romance was overall enjoyable because I found myself really enjoying Ra and Onia wasn't a bad character either. The biggest complaint I have is just it didn't truly feel like they were in love, just lots of attraction.
I hoped that the writing style would bring about a more dramatic feeling as the story was supposed to be very intense, but it didn't really feel that way. The writing style was just a little flat for me in terms of how it built up the excitement, but that also could have been because everything felt pretty fast too and there wasn't really time for me to adjust to things as they were happening. This is mostly a personal preference though, and I didn't hate the style of writing overall, it just felt a bit like a debut novel in that sense.
Overall, while there were things that needed improvement in my opinion it was a debut novel that makes me want to keep an eye on what else this author will be releasing. My favorite part of reading this was definitely the Egyptian mythology, and how many gods/goddesses were actually present in this book. Some of the romance, worldbuilding, and other things could have been improved on but this wasn't a bad book really and I still did enjoy some aspects of reading it. I recommend checking it out if you enjoy Egyptian mythology or want to read more books about it.
[TW: death of a parent, blood, and gore, passing out, assault, attempted sexual assault, violence, torture, sexual scenes]

I was intrigued by the blurb for this book and the beautiful cover.
Onia is a young woman who has no idea of who she really is she also has a the gift of reading souls. So when they die and come to the Halls to be judged and stand by the scales they will know their fate. A guardian Ra has been sent from the Halls to protect her and bring her home. This is their story, a steamy romance with plenty of magic and horror all set in Egyptian mythology. An entertaining read that took my breath away. I could not stop reading. I want more I need more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This book drew me in from the blurb as soon as I read it. This book is the authors take on Egyptian Mythology featuring Gods and Goddesses.
The world building was fantastic from start to finish in this book.I love when authors explain in detail so you’re not left wondering or not fully understanding. I enjoyed the intricate magic system in the book.
I felt the two main characters Ra and Onia were well developed and their slow burn romance was perfect. I enjoyed how their romance was not the main part of the slow but second to the plot.
I did feel that the other characters weren’t as well developed as the main and could do with a bit more depth to them.
If you love a slow burn romantic fantasy with magic, Gods & Goddess and Fated Mates then this book is definitely for you.
I do look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Publisher for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Fall of Souls by R.A. Moreau is a beautifully crafted adult fantasy romance that is both passionate and intriguing. Set in a world of Nubian gods and goddesses, the story is filled with secrets, betrayal, and intricate politics that keep the reader engaged from start to finish.
The world building in this book is exceptional. Moreau has created a world that is richly detailed and immersive, with every setting being explained in vivid detail. The author’s use of Egyptian mythology adds a unique flavor to the story, and the magic system based on Kan is fascinating and well-explained.
The two main characters, Ra and Onia, are both flawed but lovable beings that are relatable and engaging. The dual narrative and enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope work incredibly well, with the transition being beautifully done. Ra is a tortured hero that is brooding and fiercely protective of Onia, while Onia is a strong and independent heroine that holds her own in many situations.
The romance between Ra and Onia is slow-burning and satisfying, with plenty of steamy moments to satisfy those who enjoy them. However, the book is not solely focused on the romance, and the plot is well-crafted with a number of twists and turns that keep the reader engaged throughout.
While there are a few minor issues, such as some repeated words and certain secondary characters that could have been developed more, the overall story is strong and complete, with a satisfying conclusion that could easily serve as a standalone book.
Overall, The Fall of Souls is an exceptional adult fantasy romance that is both passionate and intriguing, with beautiful world building and engaging characters that keep the reader invested in the story from start to finish. Highly recommended for fans of the genre, and those looking for a unique and captivating read.

A solid read that I am possibly going to purchase a physical copy of. A great plot, and a really good slow burn with enough sparks to make you really root for them. My one caveat on the slow burn, it was so good that at the end I just wanted a bit more of them and their love and the book ends before you can get your fill.
I look forward to reading more titles by this author.

I was intrigued by the blurb for this book. The authors retelling of the story of Egyptian mythology.
The spicy, slow burn romance plot also lacked the tension and build-up to keep me focused.
It was really slow at times.. and honestly didn't think I would finish it but I'm glad I did!

Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for providing this ARC ❤️
The word "Kan" is mentioned approx. 230 times in this book. And the word "Soul" probably twice that.
The premise is something I love to read about but the writing style and execution unfortunately fell short. With better and more extensive editing I'm sure Moreau could write something amazing.
However, I am most likely not the target audience for books like this. If you love FBAA and Egyptian mythology then you will probably love this.

Thank you NetGalley and Pleasure & Power Publishing for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
The Fall of Souls is a fantastical, romantic take on Nubian mythology. Although slow at first, the book clearly sets the scene and transports the reader to Africa. Moreover, the dual narrative makes the story feel more dynamic, after the slow start it picks up the pace. This writing style makes the characters feel more rounded, more relatable, as one can see the two points of view.
As a mythology geek, this read has been very entertaining, allowing me to further discover Egypt’s mythology. Although this is an adult fantasy, and it gets spicy at times, it is an enjoyable read that will provide more insight into an already well known ancient civilisation.

the cover: GORGEOUS i love it so much
the FMC: Onia- we follow Onia as she discovers her lineage and the truth of the powers she's felt all along. she grows throughout the book while being strong, smart, and learning to find people she can trust
the MMC: Ra- the guardian who was sent to find and bring the next Empress to the Hall to help the flow of souls in the afterlife. things get complicated when he feels a pull to the person he's supposed to be protecting. we follow Ra through dealing with family dynamics, political intrigue, and the determination of his fate
POV: 1st person dual perspective
HEA: yes!
spice: there are several open-door spicy scenes and plenty of longing during the slow burn!
TWs: violence, murder, patricide, death of a parent, mental abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse
standalone?: 1st book in The Book of Kan series
final thoughts: this book was great- fast paced with a slow burn romance. lots of action, world building, and family dynamics kept the book very interesting and hard to put down. i loved reading the story from the FMC and MMCs POVs 😍 but i didn't love that it didn't follow a lot of common storyline of the house of Anubis. the family dynamics were hard to wrap my head around (parents, children, and partners that don't match with Egyptian Deities, physical embodiments that don't match with Egyptian Deities, and Anubis being depicted as the bad guy 😩😢) once i was able accept those things, i really enjoyed the book but i kept finding myself taken back when certain relationships were mentioned LOL
read this book if you love
🙏 Egyptian god retellings
💘 fated mates
🔮 powers/non-human elements
🌎 wonderful but not hard to follow world building
🔥 slow burn

I want to thank Netgalley and R.A.Moreau for this ARC. This is my honest opinion
I really liked this book. I loved the magic, the fantasy world, the secrets, the romance, and the mythology.
The first maybe 20% of the book was a little hard to understand sometimes, because the story begins immediately, without an introduction to this fantasy world.
But after that, we begin to understand this world with the gods, learn some secrets and the action starts.
The romance was sweet, I liked how the author introduced it and how it develops.
This end! I really need the next book like nooooooow please

Fantasy romance at its best
When she loses the only family she has, Onia decides not to try and find out why her mother abandonned her or why her kan is different. But when a handsome stranger rescues her from demons, she finds out that her questions are finally about to be answered. Leaving her mortal life behind, she follows Ra who seems hellbent on protecting her and whose spirit calls to hers. But where they're going, danger, power and secrets are the masters, and Onia will have to make sacrifices she never expected if she wants to survive and set things right.
I love fantasy romance. But when it's diverse AND adult? Count me all the way in. Let me tell you that this gorgeous baby was no exception. I dove right into it, and it exceeded my expectations easily. The characters were likeable from the start. I loved the darker side they both had and the secrets they held. Their relationship was really entertaining to follow, full of tension, mystery and pure devotion that had me swooning. The sexual tension was absolutely through the roof and the spice was worth the wait and perfectly balanced with everything. The world was truly amazing, easy to understand and filled with mythological references that I loved and with a magic system that was quite fascinating and beautiful. It was an absolute pleasure to journey across the land with our two protagonists, discovering more and more with each chapter. The revelations toward the end and the choices the characters made had me gasping and I can't wait to read the sequel to see what happens next.
I highly recommend if you're looking for an adult fantasy romance with mythology.
"What are you doing?" she yelped.
"Making sure you live... Even if I don't."
TW: violence, blood, assault, death, abuse, sexually explicit scenes

The Fall of Souls is a steamy fantasy romance involving Nubian gods and goddesses. I might not be the target audience for these types of novels because I found the amount of thirst and horniness in this novel astounding in a negative way. I know that there's a reason for their horniness, but it still annoyed me a bit. For most of the book, before the MC and ML finally had sex, it felt like the MC and the ML got aroused in almost every encounter, and every skin contact caused tingles. After a while, it started to get tiring.
Setting aside the horniness, the story is ok. I enjoyed the character interactions, and the setting with the Nubian gods and goddesses is interesting. The author managed to incorporate the mythological aspect pretty well. Although I'm not very familiar with Nubian mythology, I didn't experience information overload or struggle to understand which mythological character is which. However, the murder mystery aspect of the story is lackluster, and the main conflicts could have been made more compelling. I thought that more could have been done with it, but clearly, the romance subplot was the main focus of the book.
Though let me just say that I have a bias against plots where the struggles in the middle of the novel mainly serve to further the romance plot, and the main conflict is resolved somehow at the end unrelated to what the main characters have been doing.
In short, this novel has been hitting things that don't work for me, but it's a feel-good novel with a happy ending, so I can't really dislike it that much.
Thank you to Netgalley and Pleasure & Power Publishing for the free copy. This is my honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is such an intriguing premise, even if the cover isn't much to look at. I'll be honest, this one took me a while to get through. But I loved that instead of another romance featuring Greek or Roman gods, we actually got one that explored Nubian gods and goddesses.
But again. Stephanie. Why are you picking up these slow burn plotted books? While the relationship was kind of insta-lovey and features soulmates, it took a while for Onia and Ra to get to where I wanted them. I love my books where they're boning and in love by 30% so these slow burns are killing me. But this book was also angsty and the plot was intriguing. I just felt myself needing to google Nubian gods and goddesses and learning how to pronounce some of the names. This wasn't going to be an ACOTAR situation where it took me three years to figure out how to say the names correctly LOL.

Look... It's not bad, but I was raised on Rick Riordan so my expectations were high to say the least (Does anyone else remember The Red Pyramid?).
The book has some minor writing scuffs, but outside of the scuff marks I found it to be enjoyable. It offers a fun tale, an interesting MC, and a lot of spice. But the drama just felt overdone and made the story a tad bit bland in the end.

Oh my god… where do I start with this review.
5 stars. It was amazing, I couldn’t put it down.
At first I thought the pace felt a bit slow, but the author has a point and they’re getting you there. Every detail is so thought out and vital to the intricate plot line.
The world building!!? I couldn’t get over how amazingly each single setting is explained, as if you could be there yourself. But it never distracts from the storyline, only adds to it.
The characters!! I loved both Ra and Onia. They are both so well written. The dual narrative is a firm favourite of mine, and the enemies to friends to lovers is the greatest trope. Honestly I can’t stress enough how beautifully done the transition is. Both the main characters are so relatable, they are flawed but lovable beings. I know some people don’t enjoy the strong feisty heroine and the “I’d kill you you” moody morally grey hero, but I can’t get enough. I feel like there are so many books that do a similar thing but this book is firmly in my top favourites.
My ONLY problem with the book is that we don’t get a little longer seeing Onia and Ra live their happily ever after. But that’s mostly just because I’m a sucker for the love scenes!
Highly recommend this book, I’ll be rereading in the near future.

This story was excellent. The characters were deep and real while also being so fun to read about. I love the body guard protector trope and the Egyptian mythology just tied it all up into one of my fave reads

It is always great to dive head first into a new fantasy world, so when I got a copy of this book from NetGalley I knew I was in for a ride.
This adult fantasy romance hand-crafted by an amazing new voice in the field, R.A Moreau, delivers everything I am always looking for in this genre. Beautiful world building, a strong heroine, a swoon worthy hero, a despicable villain, a background in Nubian gods and goddesses that I didn’t know I was missing from fantasy and some good old steam between the main characters.
Onia is all alone in this world, reading people’s spirit for a living. That is when she meets Ra, a fierce guardian descended from Anubis who informs her that she is the daughter of the (murdered) Goddess Ma’at and she must take her place in the Hall where the souls of the dead pass through. Oh and because of that her life is in danger of course. The pair travels together to the Hall and let the romance begin!
I must say that I have loved Egyptian mythology since I was a kid. The author does an amazing job presenting them in a way that explains both their disposition as characters and powers at the same time, leading us towards liking or not liking them.
The world they live in is unique and it is easy to find yourself imagining you are there even if you are not familiar with the specific mythology or the magic system (Kan and its manipulation is explained early on).
Ra is everything a male lead should be. A tortured hero, plenty handsome, brooding and he guards Onia’s life with a heated passion (Enter here that two of my favourite tropes are the Bodyguard and “Touch her and you die” so check and check). Also… male characters who fit in this category of extremely powerful but tormented? chef’s kiss…
Onia is a strong female character, she needs help sometimes but can clearly hold her own in many situations and she continuously surprises many male characters with her adaptability, ingenuity and smart mouth. I kept rooting for her throughout the book. Go girl!
Their romance developed quite slowly so a treat for all us slow burn romance types but had all the little treats here and there to satisfy our steam thirst. However, when the steam comes… let’s just say it doesn’t disappoint!
The only drawbacks I will comment on are some repeated words that threw me off balance while reading because I kept noticing them and certain dislikeable secondary characters that didn’t have enough of an arc so I couldn’t really understand their attitude and actions like Ra’s sister Ananiah (I really don’t like her) and Ammit. Maybe they will unfold in the sequel though it was a nice complete story which could easily be a standalone. Other than those I had an amazing time reading this book!

Title: The Fall of Souls
Author: R.A. Moreau
Genre: Romance/Fantasy
Age Rating: 18+
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
I was intrigued by both cover and blurb. Binge-worthy. Can’t wait for book 2
Trigger warning: mentions of abuse, kidnapping, violence, grief

I really fancied this book so much, but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. I will definitely check out more books, but I do admit I DNF this after a quarter read as it just didn’t pick up for me. Good world building and the chemistry was there, but not enough for me to keep reading sadly.

The Egyptian inspiration really intrigued me and I have to say this was a unique idea that was well presented, and it had some good steam to it. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
