Summary:

When Atlas’s parents get new jobs running a luxurious hotel he can’t believe his luck. It sounds almost too good to be true . . .

It is. The hotel has very unusual residents – ancient gods and goddesses, forgotten by humans who now worship TikTok celebrities. There’s a water dragon in the swimming pool, an Egyptian cat goddess demanding treats, a Viking god throwing his magical hammer around the garden, and an Aztec god who thinks Atlas is a human sacrifice! When Atlas ventures into the basement, where the Greek god Hades lives, he accidentally unleashes a closet-full of mythical monsters – including a three-headed Hellhound!

Can he get the monsters back into the basement before his parents lose their jobs?

Review:
I have always been a huge fan of mythology and ancient gods so this was right up my street. The story is full of humour, mayhem and mischievous gods. A fast paced, funny story perfect for children of all ages, whether it’s read to them or they read it by themselves. A great way for children to learn about ancient gods in a fun fiction book. Loved the illustrations aswell!

A fun story bringing together gods, goddesses, heroes and monsters from a range of mythologies including Greek, Egyptian, Norse and more. This was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

This first novel introduced our main character Atlas and his family who can’t believe their eyes, or luck, when they get the job of running the Hotel For Gods. It’s not all fun and games though as Maui the trickster talks Atlas into a whole host of troubles, including unleashing a three headed hellhound from the basement! There’s chaos with Gods arguing and flingin hammers, while the Dragon King inhabits the pool!

This is a great story for anyone who loves myths and legends from any tradition with a fun story line and amusing illustrations.

A really enjoyable read, my 9 year old co-reviewer loved the references to Greek Gods. Atlas was a kind character and it was funny when he arrived "Heaven away from Heaven" The book is well illustrated and captured her imagination. A great read!

Beware the Hellhound is a funny, laugh out loud middlegrade book full of gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures. Atlas is fed up with his life. He gets picked on at school and can't have a pet in the flat his family rent, and his parents constantly apply for better paid jobs to no avail. When Atlas befriends a cat and his parents get offered a job managing a hotel they don't recall applying for, he can't believe their luck! When they arrive at the hotel, they're in for a shock, as it's not a normal hotel. It's run as a heaven away from heaven for gods, goddesses, and mythical beings. This was so much fun to read and will definitely appeal to children with the humour throughout. This also makes a great book to teach about different gods and goddesses, and children will enjoy seeing some of their favourites make an appearance in this book. I laughed out loud so many times reading this and hope there will be more to come!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to share it with my class. Atlas, a boy, who in regular life is often subject to the ridicule of bullies, goes from zero to hero as he navigates his new, chaotic life, with his family, running a hotel for the gods. Unfortunately for him, wherever he goes, trouble seems to follow. Despite this, you can't help but smile at some of the outlandish antics that Atlas embarks upon within the story. It is an action packed, laugh out loud, fun and engaging book, that will leave you pondering what Atlas might get up to next.
Ingeniously, Easton has managed to include gods from a plethora of ancient civilisations, generously throwing in titbits from the ancient stories and events that surround them. Teaching in the upper years of primary, I can imagine the children revelling in the opportunities the elements of the book provide to revisit aspects of their learning from previous years. As a teacher, what better way to revisit previous content than indulging in a book that is as rich in history as it is in creativity and humour.

A brilliant book that is fun, and funny, to read! It introduces children to the basics of different mythologies whilst maintaining a great plotline - great for younger readers! I really look forward to reading more tales from the Hotel of the Gods!

If you're after another genius concept that's hilariously funny, why not try Hotel Of The Gods. This is another genius concept and a riotous, brilliantly written caper which left us immediately wanting more...

When Atlas' parents mysteriously land new jobs running a luxurious hotel, he's really excited. This might be just the thing to change his family's luck.

But when they arrive at the hotel, they soon find this is no ordinary hotel. This is a holiday destination for ancient gods and goddesses who are no longer worshipped by humans. With prankster Maui showing him the ropes, a dragon in the pool and a gateway to the Underworld in the basement, Atlas is not finding his new life a bed of roses. But when he accidentally unleases Cerberus, a .;'three-headed hellhound and a whole host of other monsters, he has to do something FAST!

This is definitely one of our favourite reads of 2023. It fits perfectly with any classroom teaching around gods and goddesses but is aimed at a slightly younger audience than the Loki series by Louie Stowell, Who Let The Gods Out? by Maz Evans or The Nothing To See Here Hotel by Steven Butler. There are a lot of characters, though, and the plot is busy, possibly making it more suitable for the older end of the 5-7 age-range.

The characters are brilliant. Although Atlas is the only child in the story, the mix of incredibly fun gods and goddesses alongside Pegasus, a water dragon and other numerous mythical creatures makes every chapter highly entertaining. Expect chaos, carnage and MAXIMUM fallouts mixed with rock concerts, makeovers and honey and banana smoothies. There's also scope for plenty more adventures and, with the next two books already on their way, I think we are in for a treat.

I received a free copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review

I can’t resist any kind of mythology and this is no exception. I wasn’t expecting this [thought it was just greek myths] and it gets a resounding yes. Completely charming. I have a craving for chips just after reading the first 3 pages. The Furies as mean girls, Hermes as a postman, Maui as a surfer dude, Bastet as a cat brilliant brilliant brilliant Tom Easton thought of everything and it’s really clever and funny as well, I want to stay at the hotel for the gods!

Up there as one of the best middle-grade releases so far this year and we are only in February!
