This is a good debut novel. The storyline is dark and plotted well. It is well written and has plenty of twists. The characters are completely dysfunctional.

It kept me guessing right until the end. Twisted and dark I was hiding under the covers but it is utterly addictive.

This book kept me guessing right until the last minute. Hannah wants to find out how her mother died but her family can’t or won’t help her - her dad has dementia and she doesn’t see her brother.
Hannah is the same age as her mother was when she died and she is determined to do all she can to find out what happened. Her dad can’t remember and she needs her brother to help her.
A fab read.

This was an okay read for me. I thought the writing was stunning and unique, and I was intoxicated by the words, but unfortunately, not the story. I also couldn’t get on with any of the characters and they won’t be ones I remember sadly. I’m sure many will love this book. It just wasn’t for me. Thank you to netgalley, the author and publisher, for a chance to read and review this book.

I lean in and whisper the question I have never let myself utter in twenty-three years.
"Dad, did you murder Mum?"
Hannah Davidson has a dementia-stricken father, an estranged TV star brother, and a mother whose death opened up hidden fault lines beneath the surface of their ordinary family life.
Now the same age that Jen Davidson was when she was killed, Hannah realises she bears an uncanny resemblance to her glamorous mother, and when her father begins to confuse them she is seriously unnerved.
Determined to uncover exactly what happened to her mum, Hannah begins to exploit her arresting likeness, but soon the boundaries between Hannah and her mother become fatally blurred.

This is a wonderful read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own hone\st voluntary review.

It's hard to believe this was written by a debut author, it is a very accomplished and well-done psychological thriller. Hannah returns home to help take care of her dementia-ridden father. She is 37, the age her mother was when she murdered. Her older brother Reece left home and kept his distance from the family since the time of the murder and has written an autobiography casting blame on their father. She uses her resemblance to her mother to try to trick her father into revealing the truth. There are numerous suspects and secrets are revealed showing that her mother wasn't the saintly figure she remembers. I didn't suspect the ending and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

I throughly enjoyed this book it was a little different to the kind of books that I would normally read but found myself completely engrossed while reading this I picked it up and struggled to put it down willing but alas I had to, I feel that most people could find themselves identifying with either parts of if not all of as the book takes you on a journey through their lives and how when things go wrong they can go really wrong and how badly families can do a great job of messing you up.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone

I really couldn't get into this book, although the premise of a daughter trying to solve her mother's death when she discovers that it could have been the fault of her father who now has Alzheimer's, showed promise the protagonist was so annoying that I simply couldn't get past more than 10% of the book.

If you like a murder mystery/thriller with a twisted streak then look no further, this is it!
Hannah refuses to believe her father was capable of murdering her mother. Her estranged brother disagrees, the neighbours are overly and eerily friendly and no one is giving away their secrets!
A brilliant debut from Liz Webb and I hope there's more to come!

Congratulations to @lizwebbauthor on her fabulous debut novel #TheDaughter, published today by @allisonandbusby

What a brilliant story, what a messed up family. The story is told from Hannah’s perspective; she is fast approaching the age that her mother Jen was when she was found murdered, but no-one was found guilty of the murder. Hannah knows that time is running out for her to find out the truth about what happened. Her father is in the late stages of dementia, so we cannot be sure if he is answering Hannah’s questions or reacting to something else – sometimes he calls her Jen, her mother’s name instead. Hannah has moved into her childhood home to look after her dad, and there are reminders of Jen everywhere.
Hannah is estranged from her brother, a famous actor who has always blamed their father for the murder since the outset. She also contacts the police officer who originally investigated the case as a young PC. Thrown into the mix are Hannah’s creepy next door neighbour & his wife, who has been like a second mother to Hannah and her brother, as well as their son.
Hannah herself is an unreliable narrator, she drinks too much and blacks out, has a dubious job history and no plans to find a new job, has various mental health challenges. She is absolutely determined to find out the truth, whoever it might hurt, and uses some very unorthodox methods to uncover what happened; the lines between her and Jen get very blurred at times. She finds out more about what Jen was like as a woman, not just as a mother, which was an eyeopener for her; she wasn’t always the person Hannah remembered her as.
I was glued to the page, and like Hannah, my suspicions about who the murderer might have been chopped and changed throughout the book. I liked the insight into Jen’s other life and how she had been treated by her friends and family over the years. The final plot twist was a huge revelation to me. I enjoyed reading this immensely and will look out for Liz’s new books for sure!

The Daughter is based on Hannah's search for the truth about her Mother's death. When the story starts, Hannah is amidst a midlife crisis; her life is in chaos; she's drinking too much and has an emotional eating disorder. Her mind is running circles, and she's suspicious and paranoid that her family members could have partaken in her Mother's murder.

Liz Webb has created a fantastic thriller with a deep plot that doesn't fail to keep the reader engaged. The story unfolds greatly, and I was absorbed in this due to the compelling suspense and the tense atmosphere. The characters are created brilliantly, and I felt emotionally drawn to Hannah. As a reader, I was swept along with Hannah's quest for answers and was eager for a solution, as much as she was.

I expect this read to be a great success, and I recommend this to all fans of this genre. As a debut, this author's writing style is exceptional. I will be picking up future works without hesitation.

A really good book that kept me gripped from the first page right up to the end, great storyline …….

I found this to be a moderately paced domestic thriller that was creepy in places and frustrating in others. Hannah’s father has dementia and cancer and is coming to the end of his life. Whilst caring for her father he becomes confused and believes Hannah is her deceased mother and apologises for the things he’s does to her. His comments lead Hannah to question whether this is just the ramblings of a sick man or an actual confession to her murder. The frustrating part of this storyline is that so many characters appear to have something to hide and getting to the truth can feel like banging your head against a brick wall.

I enjoyed the storyline and the author does a good job of making characters feel creepy and untrustworthy. Well worth a read.

I LOVED every word of this novel until nearing the end.

The novel contrasts the present day findings of the main character alongside her memories of her mothers death whilst she was a teen.

The dark humour displayed by the self deprecating now adult adds a wonderful balance to the tragic unfolding story.

No spoilers I just found the ending becoming increasingly obvious and felt annoyed with myself rather than the author !

An accomplished debut novel, I look forward to future books by the author.

The Daughter is the story of a family surviving after the murder of their mother.

Hannah is caring her father who has been failing in health due to Alzheimer's and undisclosed prostate cancer. She gets up one morning only to find him at the bottom of the stairs. After being taken to the hospital the police are called in due to a suspicious accident. While there, her father asks about the dog repeatedly and each time, she tells him something different in aggravation since he doesn't remember anything anyway. He then calls out for "Jen" Hannahs deceased mother by saying "I'm sorry." Hannah leans in and asks her father "did you murder mum?" This will set the pace for the remainder of the book.

Clearly Hannah hasn't been taking care of herself, and struggled with the murder of her mother, her father was not a nice man. Her brother Reece AKA Ryan, is now a successful actor, left two weeks after the funeral claiming he knows his father was guilty and never spoke to his father again.

Hannah reaches out to Reece/Ryan for help with decisions about their father. Reece/Ryan says make the decisions and I will sign off on them, wanting nothing to do with their father's final care.

Hannah begins to feel that there was more to her mother's death than what she has remembered or been told. When Philip returns home for his last days, strange things begin to happen around the house. Oddly Hannah feels as if her mother is there and is guiding her to the truth.

This is a multi-layered domestic thriller. It takes many twists and turns until the final reveal. For me, this was a hard story to read. I wasn't a fan of Hannah or any of the other characters. I don't believe families come out unscathed after such a tragedy, and often they are deserving understanding. But this family doesn't seem as if they were likeable before and certainly not after, so it was hard to finish reading.
