An emotional story about a young couple embroiled in the early 1920's Irish movement for independence. The author did a great job of bringing this historical era to life.

I've read and enjoyed all of Sheila O'Flanagan's previous books and this one was a departure from her usual subject matter since this was historical fiction, set in the Irish Civil War. I enjoyed it very much and it actually piqued my interest to find out more about the true stories behind the fiction since I must admit that I wasn't as familiar with the history as I would like to be. This was a family story, concentrating on one woman in particular and it held my attention from start to finish. A book that exceeded my expectations and helped me to learn in a fun and easy way!

Thank you very much to the NetGalley and the publisher for a free advance copy of The Woman on the Bridge in exchange for an honest review.

It's been a while since I read a Sheila O'Flanagan, and this book shows she has moved away from the chick lit I remember her for.

The setting is Dublin in the 1920s. Ireland is a country at war. Winnie O'Leary, who works in a draper's shop, becomes unwittingly caught up in it when a stone is thrown through the shop window and she meets Joseph Burke.

She and Joseph fall in love but their relationship is challenged when Winnie has to become more involved in the fighting than her family would like.

Based on the life of O'Flanagan's grandmother, I found this an eye opener of a book. As a child in England we were taught nothing about Irish history and it was my husband's Irish mother who educated me about the atrocities of the English on their neighbours. It still shocks me to the core. O'Flanagan puts a human face on a desperate battle.

The story of a young couple caught up in the troubles in Ireland in the 1920’s.
A tale of people trying to live their life under harrowing circumstances.

One amazing author and quite an amazing book, so much more should be told what Irish people had to endure under British ruling can highly recommend.

This is a horrific period of history and yet not many books cover it and so for that reason, amongst others, I reaklly enjoyed this book. It was well written with a captivating and emotive story and well developed characters. I couldn't put it down

This is a brilliant historical read set in very troubling times in Ireland when loyalties are divided then further divided by the desire for freedom from English rule. This has some very strong female characters and does a good job of representing differing views as well as the effects events have on people and their loyalties. The relationship between Winnie and Joseph provided a great narrative for the story but I was most interested in the general characters and events which proved quite an eye opener to me.
