*Eleven Liars* by Robert Gold is a gripping addition to the Ben Harper series, blending mystery and suspense in a small-town setting. The story kicks off with journalist Ben Harper discovering a fire at the local community center, leading to the rescue of an unidentified person. This event unravels a complex web of secrets and lies that have plagued the town of Haddley for decades. Gold's narrative is rich with twists and turns, keeping readers on their toes as they navigate through multiple storylines that eventually converge in unexpected ways.

The characters are well-crafted, with Ben Harper and DC Dani Cash at the center of the investigation. Their dynamic adds depth to the story, as personal stakes become intertwined with professional duties. Gold excels at creating a sense of mistrust among the townspeople, making it difficult to discern friend from foe. With its fast-paced plot and engaging storytelling, *Eleven Liars* is a must-read for fans of crime fiction who enjoy intricate plots and character-driven narratives.

Eleven Liars in the second book in the Ben Harper series and follows on from Twelve Secrets (see my review here). Whilst this book can be read as a standalone, I always recommend reading the series in order especially as this series is very character led with some fascinating back stories.

The main character Ben Harper is a true crime journalist and about to launch a podcast based on what happened in the previous book and it’s on his way home to the small town of Haddley when he spots flames coming from an abandoned building next to the church.

As he gets nearer to the burning building he spots a figure trapped inside and bravely rescues them before they run away unidentified. As the fire crews battle with the flames they then discover the remains of a skeleton who appears to have been buried under the foundations years and years ago.

This case has a personal link to several of the main characters in the series and we follow each of their stories trying to connect the dots and work out who, why and how this skeleton was killed and left under the building.

Eleven Liars is another complex and twisty story with a cast of interesting characters and some very deadly secrets that they are desperate to keep hidden.

So many secrets in one small town, which certainly keeps you on your toes as you read. Good twists and turns, especially towards the end. It looks like this is part of a series and I hope to read more!

Eleven Liars is a superbly written thriller it’s the second book in the Journalist Ben Harper series, you don't really have to read TWELVE SECRETS to appreciate this one but I would strongly recommend it so you have an idea of the characters and relationships. Gold has meticulously plotted a book that has it all, mystery, and deliciously placed twist and turns that reveals a complex web of years-old secrets and tangled lies. Gold throws you straight into the action and the plot develops at a startling pace from then on in.

The book opens with a fire in a derelict community centre, a skeleton found in the burnt-out foundations, and someone trapped, and that’s just for starters! In the town of Haddley town it appears everybody has something to hide. Like any small town it’s abuzz with rumours. Was this an accident, or arson? Who was the person who escaped the fire? What we’re they doing there? Ben alongside PC Dani Cash, investigate the case. Between them they peel back the layers of the case uncovering a web of deceit that’s uncomfortably close to home.

The town has a plethora of flawed characters, some more likeable than others, some more trustworthy than others. One of the strengths of this book is how many of the townspeople appear suspicious, so your never quite sure who to trust. There are multiple storylines that weave through this book, and although they appear unrelated Gold slowly but surely skilfully brings them together, but not before he misdirects the reader at every opportunity. With short, snappy chapters, and a tightly woven story ELEVEN LIARS is a absolutely solid crime fiction novel which made for cracking read.

After rescuing a person from a burning community centre, they flee before being identified, then a body is found in the ruins. As Harper probes the mystery his search for the truth uncovers explosive answers.

Note: this is the second in a series and it can be read as a stand alone but the references to a previous case will surely make you wish to read it.
It's a success when you go and buy other novels by an author after reading one.
This is what happended with this story: I was on the edge since the first chapters, I felt something was going to happen and there was a sense of doom.
A lot of surprising twists and a solid plot that kept me guessing
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine

Robert Gould takes up his second novel with lead character Ben Harper. As always the story is expertly crafted to start off as something very simple a fire in a community centre a variety of characters stories are interwoven into the main story to give it depth and give uou a good hook in. You want yo keep kn reading to see how it all turns out.
Brilliantly written with lots of didnt see that coming moments. The story is a standalone and as such means readers can discover this brilliant new writer without having to read the first novel first. I can see how more novels with this character could be fab to read.
Sadly part of this story isnt made up and the obvious research gone into it shines through.
A real pleasure to read. So look forward to the next one. Thank you net gallery for my arc. Highly recommended 5 star read

I thought that this was a gripping read!

The plot was really well developed and I liked the way that the story had been told.

The pace for the plot was good and there were a fair few twists and unexpected things that popped up too and I was pleased that the author managed to bring everything all together at the end and wrapped up any loose ends as there were a few different plot lines in play.

I thought that the characters were well developed, some I liked, some I didn’t and I think its things like that which make the story more of a real read as I certainly don’t like everyone I meet in real like. The pace for the story was spot on as well and I read it over two evenings.

It is 5 stars from me for this one, a well developed plot with plenty going on to keep me hooked and entertained – very highly recommended, I really enjoyed it

Journalist, Ben Harper notices the local derelict church is on fire and see someone fleeing the scene. DC Dani Cash is involved in finding out who set the church alight and when a skeleton is discovered within the grounds, the case take a very personal turn for Dani. This enquiry leads to Dani’s world to come crashing down around her. Without spoiling the plot, it is hard to describe the plot further.
After the success of Twelve Secrets, I felt Eleven Liars was a weaker second book. Told from Bens point of view, he is instigator in the investigation. Some of the characters need a bit more development, I’m hoping the third book will reignite the intrigue of book 1.

ELEVEN LIARS is a great follow up to the first book in this series, Twelve Secrets. This book continued a lot of the plot points from the first book that weren’t really explained and really explained them and a lot of things added up. There were a lot of new characters with big secrets and it was really interesting reading about them all and how all their secrets connected.

I loved reading about some of the returning characters such as Ben and Dani, both of them equally intriguing and fascinating to read about. I won’t say too much about the plot as I don’t want to spoil, but unlike the first book which dived into Ben’s life and the secrets hiding, this book focused on Dani and her life and things that happened in her past and I loved that.
This ended on a cliffhanger and ended quite abruptly so it’s definitely open to a third book in the series and I can not wait to continue this series!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Little Brown Book group for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Eleven Liars is the second book to the series which began with Twelve Secrets. Journalist Ben Harper and DC Dani Cash are involved in investigating a fire from years ago.

The story is complex and deserves far more quality time than I was able to devote to get the most out of this read.

A well plotted book with a lot of detail.

This was a great follow up to the authors first book Twelve secrets and does not disappoint. Love that it ends with a teaser for the next book which is obviously going to be called Ten …..???
We are reintroduced to Ben Harper Harper, investigative journalist, and DCI Dani. This time Ben becomes across a burning building and rescues a teenager. From here unravels a story which will involve the whole community.
This kept me absorbed from the first page and I loved all the twists and turns. Ben Harper is a believable character with his own faults but always striving to protect Dani and do the right thing.
I can’t wait for book three.
Thanks to Little brown books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book I've read by Robert Gold. And it is also the second part of the novel series in which the main character is journalist Ben Harper.
Eleven Liars is a very well-written crime/mystery novel. Usually, I wouldn't say I like descriptions, but here they are masterfully written and ideally introduce the story's atmosphere, places and people. Thanks to it, I felt like part of the investigation.
What I liked the most, however, was how the action develops with each chapter. I also enjoyed the diversity of perspectives from which I could observe how the pieces of riddles are arranged and reveal carefully hidden secrets and intrigues. I totally loved that every character had its own version of events, a part of the story and a voice in it. I admit that it could occasionally be confusing, but I am addicted to twists and turns, and I think the actual story in that way is more surprising and outstanding to discover.
It was a brilliant book to read.

This book is the absolute definition of a page-turner. I was such a massive fan of Twelve Secrets so I knew that returning to see what Ben Harper would get involved in next would be a thrilling ride. In Eleven Liars, Ben discovers a fire in the local community centre owned by the church but when the police come in to investigate, a body from a historical case is found. Working together with PC Dani Cash and his journalist colleagues they begin to unearth a dark trail of corruption and cover-ups in their seemingly peaceful village. I just love the characters in this series, they are so engaging and had me rooting for them the whole way through. I cannot wait to find out what 'Ten" Robert Gold has in store for us next!

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group (Sphere) for the chance to read an ARC.

A very slow burn of a story to start with, but in the last 100 or so pages, it really picks up and throwst twists at you every page it seems!

Overall an enjoyable but not brilliant read

A mystery with a murder? Is it or isn’t it? That is the question!

No not Shakespeare, this book.

Can’t give too much detail or it would spoil it for you. Very gentle mystery with a lot going on but no real answers until you get to the end.

The twists are very subtle so blink and you’d miss them.

Eleven Liars by Robert Gold is the second book in the Ben Harper series.
In short, journalist Ben Harper discovers the local community centre on fire and rescues a person trapped inside only for the person to flee the scene before they can be identified. The fire reveals a skeleton in the burnt out foundation which starts the unraveling of a web of deceit and destruction that goes back decades.
Well it’s simply another satisfying, well plotted, clever mystery crafted by Robert. I adore his storytelling, just so twisty and engrossing it keeps you guessing until the very end…and it all happens in the small town of Haddley! I’m already intrigued to discover more on the next visit! I highly recommend this series, Eleven Liars is an easy 5 stars from me.
Big thanks to Robert Gold, Little, Brown Book Group and NetGalley for this eARC which I chose to read in return for my honest review.
