I really enjoyed Robert Gold’s first book so very much looked forward to this. It didn’t disappoint. I did find it hard to pick up the storyline for some characters from the first book as it was so long ago I read it - it would be good to have a précis somewhere but appreciate that isn’t a good thing for some readers.

Eleven liars is the second book in the Ben Harper series. I read Twelve secrets the first in the series and I was intrigued to find out more.
Ben is walking home in Haddley when he sees a fire in a disused community centre and there is someone locked inside. He helps them escape, but instead of thanking Ben they soon disappear. The next day when the investigators arrive, remains of a body is found in the foundations. Police call for witnesses. Ben Harper, investigative reporter is also interviewing witnesses to find out who the culprit is and who is the body is the foundations to use for his latest podcast. There is a lot of secrets in the town and who is telling the truth? Soon secrets are revealed involving not only Murder, but drug peddling too.
Eleven liars is another gripping thriller from Robert Gold, and I honestly say that this is better than the first in the series. Yes, this has quite a complex plot. that at times I felt it was hard to figure out but it comes clear towards the end. I couldn’t put this down. This is a great read and I like the characters especially Pamela. I felt sorry for her. I would come and have a cup of tea and cake anytime. 5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

This is the second instalment in the Ben Harper series. Ben is a journalist and happens to come across a fire at the local community centre. Rushing to the fire he manages to save someone’s life, but doesn’t know who they are as they run off. But it wasn’t just a fire, it was arson. This one crime unravels other crimes, to which Ben is determined to get to the bottom of, and starts to investigate with his police officer friend, Dani.

This was a great instalment to this series, and the whole character/setting is really easy to become invested in. The writing was just as good as the first book, and made for easy reading. The characters are really well written, and the author creates them so they are relatable and you could easily become friends with them. We read the story from different character perspectives and really widens the story so it’s easy to see various sides of the story. A great read that I’d highly recommend.

Having read the first book in this series I was delighted to recveive this second installment through net galley and the publishers.

We catch up with the residents of Haddley and Ben after rescuing someone from a fire in a disused community centre seems to start a chain of events that don't make any sense.

With a bit of sleuthing we find out the truth, I loved this book and will be eagerly waiting for the next one.

4 stars

Thanks to Robert and NetGalley for allowing me to read Eleven Liars before the publication date.
I have been looking forward to this book having previously enjoyed Twelve Secrets.

This is a carefully woven story which spins out over more than 2 decades and will reveal details of PC Dani Cash’s personal life which will shock her.

Can journalist Ben Harper and Dani untangle the many secrets and lies?

Thank you for my copy of this book to read and review.

I will be honest and found this book very slow to begin with, it didn’t really hold my interest and I felt it took a while to get going.

But I kept with it, it completely turned around after around the first third and I couldn’t put it down.

I would say I didn’t enjoy the plot for this one as much as Twelve Secrets but I liked the continuity of the characters and the interwoven story lines, and it seems like it’s been left open for a third book, which I’m pleased about.

Although this book is part of a series and there are brief mentions of the previous story, it can definitely be read as stand-alone.

was really looking forward to this after Twelve Secrets being so brilliant but unfortunately for me, this just didn't deliver. I found the plot far fetched and with too many criminal elements - dead wife, county lines, corrupt vicar etc. The character of Ben who we learnt so much about in 12 secrets, seemed flat and didn't develop at all. I found that I just wasn't really bothered about what happened. Really disappointing.

Robert Gold once again immerses the reader in the deadly secrets and deceptions that proliferate in the small London community of Haddley, past and present. Online investigative journalist Ben Harper returns, writing a podcast about what happened to his brother, Nick, and his mother, he is still living in the family home in spite of the tragedies associated with it, he has close connections to the town's people. He is on his way home, taking a short cut, when he notices a fire in the disused community centre in the grounds of St Stephen's church, he sees a trapped figure and breaks down the locked door, only for the hooded person to take the opportunity to run and escape. PC Dani Cash is now a DC, and it is her life and family that takes centre stage here.

As the police investigate the arson, a far more gruesome discovery is made, a body is found in the foundations of the community centre. This has shocking implications for Dani as it turns all that she thought she knew about her family upside down, her obsessive late father, Jack, had been in charge of policing. He had raised her with a loving and tender picture of her mother, Angela, since a house fire, from when she was a small child. Knocked off kilter, Dani is determined that the police are not allowed to get away with a superficial inquiry and asks for Ben's help. In a fast paced thriller that had me turning the pages as fast as I could, we make our way through the eleven lies and a wide cast of characters, from the villainous to the good and the kind. It is made clear at the end that the issues raised are far from settled.

Those inhabiting the novel include the Reverend Adrian Withers, the young and vulnerable Archie Grace, the now retired building company owner, Betty Baxter, her son, Bertie, and the elderly, lonely Pamela Cuthbert. This is a gripping read that goes back and forth in time, uncovering the often unexpected truths, with Ben playing an instrumental role in helping bring to the light the lies and the liars with the help of Sam, his boss's father, slowly joining together the pieces of the intricate puzzle. Dani experiences the toughest of times, coming to terms with a past she had little awareness of, a marriage under severe stress, and comes to finally appreciate her father's perspective on the drug trade and the police. A fantastic crime read and series! Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

I’ve loved returning to Haddley and the life of Ben Harper. Cleverly written because whilst there is a vast array of characters, full of varying problems and secrets, it’s really easy to follow. Sometimes when there are a whole bunch of characters going on, you can forget who is who, but it doesn’t happen here at all. I loved the way everything unravelled and pulled back together again. Full of twists and excitement with the ending I wanted! A lot of the story is centred around addiction but I personally didn’t find it triggering despite addiction being an issue in my family, however others may find it hard to read. Whilst Eleven Liars is part of a series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone but I would highly recommend reading Twelve Secrets too.

This is the second book in the Ben Harper series the first being Twelve Secrets and you read this one as a stand-alone but I would urge you to read the first as it’s an excellent read as is this one and I’m really hoping for a book 3.
The story starts with a fire at the local community centre, Ben Harper is walking home when he sees the flames and spots a figure who appears to trapped, rushing to help Ben frees the door but the figure runs off leaving Ben puzzled as to what is going on. The book then develops into one heck of a brilliant mystery with plenty of characters, lots of secrets and quite a number of twists that took me by surprise.
The writing was really good and the crafting of the story excellently done there is a lot going on and it did leave me many times puzzling over just how the plot was going to end and I loved that.
So a great read and as I said I’m really impressed with this series ,many thanks to Robert Gold for keeping me on my toes whilst trying to guess the perpetrator.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group, Sphere for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I hadn't read Robert Gold's debut novel and I'm generally a completionist when it comes to book series however this can definitely be read as a standalone.

One night on his way home, Ben Harper stumbles across a community centre on fire. Rescuing someone within the building, who subsequently runs away, leaves him confused. As does the discovery of a body within the building who appears to have been there for a long time

As Ben investigates the circumstances around the death, it is clear that his small town has a number of secrets that it would rather remain hidden.

This was a really enjoyable book and definitely an author I will follow in the future. A really well developed, intelligent story which pulls you along with gentle ease bringing you towards a really satisfying conclusion. Just when you think you have it all worked out, some final twists just make you catch your breath.

Highly recommended and thanks to Little, Brown Book Group UK, Sphere and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is multilayered and detailed completely addictive to read. I’ve loved the short snappy chapters, it’s really kept me hooked.

I’ve loved the reminders from the previous book and revisiting Ben. He’s a great character from the beginning.

The constant cliff hangers in each chapter have really kept me hooked and wanting more. I have devoured this book in just one sitting.

The characters in this are brilliant, I have been completely caught up in wanting to know what will take place next.

There are so many twists and turns in this one. I’ve been completely unable to guess where this was going.

This is a book that has been an easy read. I was pulled in from very early on and completely unwilling to put this down.

This has been a great read and one I highly recommend.

I don't know if I suffered from not having read the first book, or the plot was at times slow, with too many characters to remember, but the first third of the book was not my favourite.
But I was fully engrossed by the time we hit the final, and it's surprising ending.
Decent likeable characters, whose back stories I should get around to reading... one day.
Plenty of turns in the storyline to keep you guessing.

Ben, an investigative reporter, is on his way home one night when he sees a fire in a local building. When he spots a figure inside, he kicks down the door, but the figure pushes past him and disappears. In the later investigation, a body is discovered, unearthing long held secrets and revelations.

A deep and satisfying story of betrayal, loss and investigative drama. Great stuff.
