I loved six crimson cranes when I read it after getting it in a fairyloot box. I was lucky to get the arc of The dragon's promise on here and also enjoyed that one.
I'm happy I got this arc. I really enjoyed reading the backstory of what happened to make Channi the way she is in the Six crimson cranes duology, It did take me some time to get into it but when I did, I flew through it
3.5 stars

as much as i like elizabeth lim's storytelling i found the characters here so predictable. i'm tired of this type of dynamic between sisters and that we end up following the 'bad' one, the 'underdog', who isn't into 'feminine' things like clothes etc..come on.

This book was pretty meh BUT I guess it's just me getting older. The characters were quite predictable and so was the plot. I could see the plot twist coming off from more than a mile away and as much as I adore Elizabeth Lim, I have to say this book fell short.

I’m very excited about this review — 1. because this was my first arc and 2. because it’s a beautiful story that I loved reading.
the tropes in this book are flawless: found family, forced proximity, a vengeful heroine, not everything is as it seems. however, the story is so much more.
I love prickly characters that you can’t help but have empathy for, and channi is just that. she’s passionate, vicious and highly capable, and yet we see a completely different side of her when she’s with her sister. while channi and vanna are diametrically different, both are strong female characters in their own ways and the devotion they have for each other is heart-wrenching.
outside of the characters, the world lim creates is vibrant and ethereal. the food descriptions had me hungry the entire time, the action scenes are visceral and there are plenty of moments of levity courtesy of ukar the snake. also, there are dragons.
the more I read, the more I fell in love. by the end, I was on amazon adding elizabeth lim’s other books to my kindle.
a final note - I didn’t realise going in that this is a prequel to the six crimson crane’s duology. I haven’t read the the duology yet, but this didn’t detract from my reading experience and I think her radiant curse could be read as a stand-alone. that said, six crimson cranes is now at the top of my tbr and I’m even more excited to read them.
thank you netgalley for the chance to read this arc in exchange for an honest review. all opinions are my own.

I'M OBSESSED!
Elizabeth Lim has done it again! Six Crimson Cranes is one of my favourite books of all time, so having a prequel story following the misunderstood stepmother was something I couldn't wait to get my hands on! As always, the writing was whimsical and enchanting. The plot was engaging and meeting new characters while finding out about Channi's origins was so cool. I had a blast reading this book and would urge everyone to pick up books by this author- you will not be disappointed!
This has everything- from swoony romance to serpents, curses, battles and tons of intrigue and politics woven throughout.
Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publishers for the e-arc!!

5 Stars does not do this book justice. Channi's story was filled with sadness, love and hope. Her loneliness was a contributing factor to the events that happened in Six Crimson Cranes and I liked reading about her backstory in Her Radiant Curse.
Channi grows up as a person who has to face the challenges of doing things by herself and bowing to her father's and stepmother's whims. After the birth of her younger sister, Vanna things changed as her sister was born with light in her very soul. It was the relationship between the sisters that I greatly enjoyed and cherished. The plot was wonderfully written and the pacing was fast and did not drag. I felt myself being immersed into the world of Her Radiant Curse and can't wait to read more books by Elizabeth Lim.
A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Elizabeth Lim has become one of my auto-buy authors. I really enjoy her writing & her stories. Her Radiant Curse, her newest book, was no exception.
The book is set in the same world as her previous books and in this one we follow the stoey of Channi, who appears in the Six Crimson Cranes duology.
The world-building was really good as always and the story was whimsical, very engaging & action-packed. It also has very good friendship and sibling dynamics between the characters.

I haven’t read the duology that this precedes so I may be missing some important foreshadowing in this book. Easy to read, beautiful cover art but unfortunately the story just didn’t work for me. I found the motivations difficult and unsatisfying. I suspect I may have been more in the story had I read the other books by the author set in this world. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.

I'm really enjoying the increased visibility of Asian authors in an otherwise white majority genre. The inclusivity of Asian history and folklore being told in this manner is really refreshing and intriguing for me (someone outside of that culture) . The world building is thoughtful and thorough and the characters devout and complex. It is a prequel but you would be able to read with without having read the other books in her world first.
Thank you Netgalley and E. Lim for the eArc.

Really enjoyed learning the story if Channari and her sister Vanna, and how the Queen became as who she is in Six Crimson Cranes,.
The backstory is interesting, keeps you turning pages. The worldbuilding is well-written and describes, amkes you easily transported into the story.
The side characters are also really crucial to the plot and I enjoyed their character arc as well!
This was easily a good read, fast paced, emotional and gripping! Cannot wait to read more from Elizabeth Lim!

I have to give this book 5 stars because I sobbed while reading it. What an amazing story. If you have a sister, I think you will find this particularly impactful. I know I did.

First of all, thank you to NetGalley and Hodder and Stoughton for this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Her Radiant Curse is Elizabeth Lim's fifth book in this Asian mythology-inspired universe (sadly there is no name, I would suggest "The Lor'yan Tales" haha) and the prequel to the Six Crimson Cranes duology, in which we follow Channari as she tries to defend her sister Vanna against the cruellest of the suitors and becomes the target of his wrath.
How can I describe and express my love for Elizabeth Lim's books? I love them soooo much, and Her Radiant Curse is no exception to this. It is a really nice addition to the worldbuilding previously created in the Six Crimson Cranes duology and the Blood of Stars duology, and I loved learning more about Channari and how she became the person she is in Six Crimson Cranes and The Dragon's Promise.
The plot is amazing and I found myself very invested in it, the writing is easy to read and understand, and the descriptions are really magical and make you want to live in this fictional realm. I really enjoyed the characters present in this book: Channari, the strong woman lead, her friendship with Ukar, a snake, and her relationship with Hokzuh, a dragon prince.
I felt like Her Radiant Curse was loosely inspired by The Beauty and the Beast, where Vanna would be the Beauty and Channari, the Beast.
Reading this prequel made me want to reread all of Elizabeth Lim's books in this universe, so it is a win for me! I highly recommend her books if you love East Asian mythology and folklore-inspired books.
I would really like to learn more about this universe, and why not have another prequel about Angma, the Demon Witch? Or Edan, the mysterious magician present in The Blood of Stars duology? Just saying 👀

I fell in love with the gorgeous cover and then I fell in love with this thought provoking and compelling story.
It deals with themes like identity, discovering what you really wnat and fighting for what you thing is important.
The two sisters are phisical different but their bond is what makes them analyze who they are and what they want
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This was pure perfection, just like the Six Crimson Cranes duology. So if you loved that, you'll surely love this too.
It's technically a prequel and a standalone, you could read it before SCC, but I'd recommend after so you can pick up on the little Easter eggs / references included.
It'll also help you see why you should care about Channi and Vanna's story, and the world building will be much clearer.
Not that it wasn't clear here, I was just looking at it from the perspective of someone who is very familiar with it (especially with SCC being among my favourite books) and it feels more like an expansion of it vs a starting point, if that makes sense.
As expected, this book made me cry early on (5% in!!) and I kept crying every once in a while, even though I didn't have that much affection for Shiori's stepmother in her series, in this one I love her.
Channari was similar to Shiori, always looking for trouble so it's no wonder she grew on me. Also, like Shiori she has a companion with her wherever she goes. Ukar is one of my favourite characters, he's so snarky. I think if snakes could talk, they'd for sure sound like Ukar.
There was a splash of romance in this book, which I of course loved, but I knew how it would end, because of the main series.
The real love story here is that of sisterly love between Channi and Vanna. You can feel how much they care about each other, how fiercely they protect one another. At first you think Channi is the one who would give everything to save Vanna, but at the end we see Vanna too would do the same for Channi.
Something I was hoping we'd get more of, is Channari's relationship with Hanriyu. We saw him during the selection, and I thought okay it's not the right time now with all the chaos, hopefully we'll get more of them later, and we did, but not enough.
I'd actually love another book (so this one wouldn't be a standalone then), covering the year long selection AND Channi's early years with Hanriyu and his kids, coming up full circle. Is that possible? Who knows, I mean, in my review of The Dragon's Promise I was hoping for a spinoff, AND LOOK WHAT WE GOT!!!
So once again, I'd love yet another spinoff set in the world, maybe following the same characters maybe not. But I think Seryu's earned his own book by now. I'm just saying. And hoping. Wishing. Praying. MAYBE WE'LL GET SOMETHING, KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!
Obligatory writing mention, I love it so much, Elizabeth Lim you've enchanted me and you have a reader in me FOR LIFE (and in the next life too).
*Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review*

This is the third book I read in a row from Elizabeth Lim. That won’t say anything to anyone, but to me it has never happened before. Usually I can’t even read two books from the same series one right after the other because I feel bored of the same writing style. It didn’t happen with any of the Elizabeth’s books.
The book is easy to read, it doesn’t build overcomplicated worlds with strange character names. It’s beautifully written and I could sense the asian mythology background all throughout the book.
The story is mesmerising and intriguing until the end. It kept me wanting more all the time. Elizabeth’s writing makes it easy for the readers to immerse in the story and to get attached to the characters.
I rated this book 5 stars based on the fact that I would re-read the story again, it left me thinking of the story for a while and that I absolutely loved Elizabeth’s writing. I love Asian mythology and I think that plays a big part on the 5 star rating.

Usually, I am not really a fan of fantasy novels but Her Radiant Curse is an unputdownable and heartbreaking fantasy novel I have read, and a fantasy novel that I actually enjoyed reading it without having any second thoughts.
I haven't read this author's previous books Six Crimson Cranes but Her Radiant Curse is apparently the prequel of Six Crimson Cranes. The story starts with Channi, who was offered as a sacrifice by her father to a tiger witch. Channi was then cursed with a serpent face as a result of the curse. The tiger witch however promised that Channi will get her face back after sixteen years if Channi brings Vanni, Channi's younger sister in return to exchange the curse. Now flash forward, Vanni has grown into a beautiful woman and she and Channi are very close together. When Vanni is auctioned off to find a potential suitor, Channi is then become a wrath of one of the suitors and Channi must learn to survive through her ability to fight and cunningness. Meanwhile, Channi wanted to fight and defeat the tiger witch so nothing will happen to her sister Vanni.
To me this book was an emotional and heartbreaking read. I was rooting for Channi and I really liked the sisterly bond that was shared between Channi and Vanni. Channi's way of protecting her sister against the enemies, despite the fact that she got cursed with a serpent face. Channi in my opinion was brave and courageous. Reading this book, helped me feel like I was in this fantasy world with Channi and Vanni and the author actually did a good job making the reader feel that way. This was fast-paced which is a good thing and I was immensely hooked into the story. The ending was sad but overall, I actually enjoyed reading this book and this became one of my favorite fantasy novels I have read. As a matter of fact, I cannot wait to read more books form this author! Worth five stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Hodder for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

Thank you to Netgalley for the e-ARC in exchange for my review. Contents in my review are my personal opinion.
Ladies and Gents, Elizabeth Lim cooked and served! and ATE THIS BOOK UP.
This book is a prequel to the Six Crimson Cranes duology, and can be read before or after the duology, depending on how you would like to experience the story.
This book was just enthralling, the magic, action, adventure was amazing and overall, the book is well-written. I highly recommend reading this book and other books from Elizabeth Lim, if you want to read Asian mythology based stories. Have I said that there's magic? yes. Highly, HIGHLY, recommend this book. Probably one of the best books I've read in 2023.

I am incredibly blown away by this story! I have not read any book by this author before so I have no knowledge of what comes after, which I did not have a problem with! I enjoyed the hardships and struggles that Channi has been through. Years of being different and reviled have made her incredibly strong and resilient. Her sole weakness is that she would do anything for her sister. She has spent years preparing for the return of Demon that wants to claim her sister. But she may not have prepared for everything and that could cost her what she loves most. Exciting and heartbreaking and so full of love and devotion. The world building and the lore that surrounds it has me desperate for more! A tale I will always remember.

As the cover might suggest, Her Radiant Curse is a prequel to the Six Crimson Cranes duology. A duology that I quite enjoyed. This prequel however did not live up to that duology.
Her Radiant Curse focuses on Channi, the stepmother of Shiori in her younger years. Which means that if you have read The Six Crimson Cranes duology you will know the basics of this story already as it is told in there. It is something that Shiori discovers. This can be a good thing as the interest of fans is already risen. But knowing what is going to happen meant that the book needed strong story telling and compelling characters. Unfortunately I felt we got neither.
The way the story was told in some places didn't always make sense. Some parts that werent that important dragged on for a while. While there were other parts where we were run through. It didn't make for a very pleasant reading.
Channi also didn't seem to match up with the woman we got to know through stories in the duology. And of course Channi is younger and things change but it was hard to see that they were the same person. I didn't care about her character. I didn't really care about her sister and even our dragon didn't quite come out well. The best bit was Ukar, the snake companion to Channi. He called her out on her bad decisions. Not that she ever listened.
I also had problems with the ending of this book. The reasoning behind Channari's anger and punishment towards the other were weak. And she even seems to know it but she still pushes through. And quite frankly it was a bed of her own making.
This book is also meant to stand alone. For readers that haven't read the duology. I hesitate to say that this is possible. I banked a lot on already knowing the world building from the duology and didn't get it enough from the actual book.

With Her Radiant Curse, Elizabeth Lim delivers the absolutely stunning tale of the origins of Raikama, the nameless queen, stepmother, and at times villain in the Six Crimson Cranes duology. Before she was Raikama, Channi was Vanna’s older sister, abandoned in the jungle by her father and cursed on the night of Vanna’s birth.
It’s a story about the bond between siblings who love each other ‘unconditionally, fully, and with every fibre of [their] being’. Shunned by her village and her father, Channi spends her time tending to the family home and attempting to break the curse that changed her looks and hangs over her sister’s future. For me, the family dynamics were what made this story special – from absolute outrage at the way her father treated Channi to being enchanted at how Lim included small everyday scenes that showed the love between the sisters, the representation of Channi’s family was emotional.
The backdrop against which the story unfolds is vivid and mesmerizing – settings range from the jungle and small island villages to palaces and temples across the sea, with scenes set in battle arenas, and flying with a dragon. I also loved the varied cast of characters, including Ukar, Channi’s snake friend, Hokzuh, the dragon prince, and Hanriyu, the emperor, on whom she takes a chance to find a new family.
Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton for my eARC through NetGalley!
