Amber Dennis has it all, well in her head she has it all. She's just been made Junior Partner at her law firm and has a fancy new apartment filled with expensive things. She also has an ego that has made her no real friends and many enemies.

This character ticked every box for narcissist, her dialogue from page to page was how beautiful she was, how smart, how intelligent, successful etc. She has no endearing or redeeming qualities and is incapable of forming relationships. Unfortunately this meant that when really horrible things happened to her I felt nothing as I had not connected with her on any level.

It was startlingly obvious who was doing all of it, the title pretty much gave it away. I really didn't enjoy it.

The Couple Next Door by Cole Baxter was such a delight to read. The author was able to create a main character that I not only hated, but I hoped and prayed for their demise to come after each page. It is not very often that I root for the bad guys, but Amber Dennis was such a spoiled and flawed human being that I wished it had happened to her sooner.

Now that you know that I am a bit of an asshole and sometimes I want the perceived good guys to lose, you should know that Amber Dennis is a ruthless and cutthroat defence lawyer in a firm trying to weasel her way up to that proverbial corner office. All that means is she will stop at nothing to get what she wants as long as she gets it, but there is one caveat. She has a stalker looking to destroy her life by any means necessary. Now does being an ambition human make you a terrible person, no. Does being a defence lawyer make you one, yes, but only until you need one do you actually like them.

What you may not like is that it is a slow burn that takes a few chapters to get into any actually important drama. Also, you may not like the title of the book as it may give away a little too much about the book and, in actuality, makes no sense for the book that was written. Still, to me that is excusable because most successful writers can't write titles for their own books.

If you can get past all that, then you are in for one hell of a ride and if you are like me, you can't wait to see them eat a piece of humble pie. What you get is a writer that makes you feel the anxiety of the characters that they write, so much so, that I will now have to go out and get another Cole Baxter book to see if they are able to get into the heads of their characters like they did here.

I promise you that if you are looking for something to read, you will not be disappointed with this masterfully written book. Just know that you will most like be rooting for the bad guys and I would have to ask the author if that is what they wanted, someday. A rollercoaster ride with a shitty human being, that ends with a bittersweet redemption of human growth, because despite what people think, people can change sometimes.

Keep reading and enjoy the rest of your day.

Amber is a high powered, career driven defense lawyer. She will do whatever it takes to succeed and get what she wants. Then unpleasant things start happening and she feels like everyone is against her. Initially, she has trouble convincing the authorities that there is a problem. And then things escalate.
I don’t think I have ever encountered a more unpleasant main character. I’m not even sure how to feel about her. Bad things happened to her, and that was wrong, but it was very difficult to feel any sympathy for her. I could understand her protagonist’s viewpoint. It doesn’t make what happened right, but I could understand. And even after it’s all over, she really didn’t learn anything from it. Just when I thought she could be a better person, nope.
This was a well written psychological thriller and while I guessed part, I did not get it all. It kept me interested and I kept coming back to find out what was next. I would read more by this author, but not more of Amber. It’s great that she was a very strong character but she was too rude and abrasive.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Successful defense attorney finally gets promoted in a huge LA law firm. She can almost taste becoming partner! However, defending the guilty party doesn’t always sit well with people. Amber’s past comes back to haunt her. Someone is stalking her and threatening to ruin her but why? Her job doesn’t make the list of suspects short. Will Amber lose everything that she’s worked so hard to achieve? The Couple Next Door is action packed and keeps you guessing! Finally a woman character who isn’t weak and dependent on someone. I loved that Amber was portrayed as a strong woman who will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. This book kept my attention right to the end!

I’m sorry, but I DNF’d this one 29% through. The MC was unlikable, the text didn’t flow - excuse me, did not flow. I found the blatant disregard for contractions to be highly annoying and dissociative with the story the author was trying to immerse us with.
Maybe it’s *it is* just me, but this book isn’t *is not* for me.

Hm... I am honestly a bit conflicted on this one. The summary had me thinking one thing, and the actual book had me thinking another. I honestly began reading the book and became confused from the very beginning; that confusion lasted for quite a while until it dissolved into something like, "I know what's going to happen here..." All in all, if you like titles that involve confident protagonists, fast paced action, and a bit of looking over your shoulder, this is for you.

Summing this book up in one word is easy - obvious. Every step of the plot was really obvious. The protagonist laid out every aspect of her character in triplicate so the reader could be sure to see what made her tick. Even the title pointed out where the solution to the “mystery” lay.

When a woman has it all - what can possibly go wrong. That's what Amber thought until threatening emails start coming and threaten to destroy her perfect life.
She is determined to find out who is doing this too her and why but that is a tall order. The person she seeks is much closer than you think.

A psychological thriller that is fast paced and a good beach read.

A hotshot lawyer with the world at her feet. A stranger determined to destroy her.

Hotshot defense lawyer Amber Dennis has it all. She's a successful attorney and the proud owner of a luxurious new condo, an expensive car, and a fat bank account. Not to mention a blossoming relationship with the gorgeous David Grant.

Amber's perfect life is shattered when she starts receiving threatening emails. At first, she brushes them off. After all, she can't help but make a few enemies in her line of work.

But when the threats become more real, she can no longer ignore them. Someone out there wants to destroy her. Who could it be, and why are they targeting her?

As her world implodes, Amber decides she's not going down without a fight. She's determined to find out who is threatening her and why.

What she doesn’t realise is her stalker is a lot closer than she thinks. And convinced that Amber has wronged them terribly, they'll stop at nothing to make her pay the ultimate price.

The Couple Next Door is a nail-biting psychological thriller that packs a powerful punch.

I love a strong female character and I felt like Amber fits that description. I really enjoyed this story and if you like psychological thrillers then this book is for you. Will recommend to others.

Incredibly fast paced, the plot moved quickly and intensely. While not a very long book, a lot happens in it, and it kept me hooked all the way through.

Protagonist Amber has just made junior partner at her law firm. She is on top of the world, and then suddenly it all goes wrong.

Amber is not the most likeable person, she is abrasive and driven, and has upset a lot of people. I didn't like her much, though she wasn't completely unbearable to read about. It was quite satisfying to watch her kind of get what she deserves.

I had several early guesses for who was behind it all, and was excited to keep reading to see the progression. There were so many possible suspects, and the list just kept growing, which made me eager to find out the outcome.

I received this ARC via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

As always, Cole baxter has delivered another suspenseful quick read. I did really enjoy it but it's just a bit odd to name the book after the storys antagonist?! It kinda takes away any element of surprise since the whole point is that the couple next door are the ones to focus on so when things start going awry....... very weird choice! But yeah, a decent book with some red herrings which again, hard to really suspect when you know the whole book you're looking out for the couple next door but never mind lol

I thought the book was ok. It seems I read this one a few times...name changed, but so close. I will say, most will enjoy it far more than me. It was just predictable for me.

One of the better books I've read from this author. I enjoyed this story that was full of mystery, revenge, and also a thriller. Although the stalker was predictable I still enjoyed reading about how the events unfold. A quick and decent read for those who love thrillers.

Thanks to Netgalley and Inkubator books for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
