"Cocoon" is a lovely memoir of holy defiance. Gilman tells her origin story of how she became deeply invested in the neighborhood despite all odds against her, to create a home where homeless teens could flourish. I lived 30 minutes south of the Cocoon House and I know that certainly impacted my read of this book. As a nearby neighbor, the reputation of the organization Gilman began, preceded my reading. It is still highly revered as a place that helps. It has continued to grow far beyond the story contained in this book. I loved Gilman's honesty. I loved how she described her own raw moments of inadequacies as she struggled to balance motherhood and the mayhem of a passion project. I was grateful for the many stories she spoke of the moments that didn't make sense; when it felt like the dream would collapse around her. I think this story would make a great New Year read as folks face giant dreams and endless obstacles. While the writing itself leaves some to be desired, the narrative makes up for any flaws. I recommend!

Gilman’s story is beautifully detailed in this memoir about her own healing and growth as she opened a shelter for homeless youth. Her commitment to the children she worked with is truly incredible. The memoir is made up of multiple interwoven stories, of the creation of Cocoon House, of children in the shelter, and of Gilman herself, each of which feel singularly impactful, but also like an important piece of a larger collective story.
Gilman’s writing is familiar and conversational, but it is also extremely honest and relatable—Gilman looks back and admits where she wishes she had done things differently. Though the text is a little simplistic, it feels accessible in a way that will inspire and resonate with readers who wish to write their own stories one day.
Be prepared to carry tissues in your tote bag if you too are a fellow public transit reader!

This is the beautiful story of how the author Sarri Gilman started from scratch and opened a nonprofit shelter for the homeless teens in her community. The ressource this woman has, her strength, her humanity, patience and kindness are truly remarkable. She is part of those that truly and positively impact everyone around them. To have come from such humble beginnings and to push yourself to do good for others who also have had very tough childhood is beautiful.
I'm not gonna lie, the writing isn't exceptional but it absolutely is readable and accessible. I hope it will inspire other people to at least try and do a little more and to be understanding of those who have nothing. Cocoon what a perfect name for a shelter and title for this heartfelt book!
