I realise that City of Echoes is not one which would necessarily appeal to the masses, but it is actually very readable for the lay person who has any interest in the city of Rome, the machinations of the Catholic Church and the vast historiography of the Christian message. I have not yet finished the book but I definitely will in the near future. The author is very knowledgeable on her subject and her writing style is easy to read and relatable to most readers. Unlike a lot of books in this genre she makes her points clearly and concisely with none of the high brow language which some academic writers use. A fascinating book and I thank the publishers and Netgalley for the chance to read and review The City of Echoes.

A brilliantly researched and all-encompassing history of papal Rome. I very much enjoyed reading this.
