It is only an extract, so it is hard to give a proper review. From what I read I can gather that Elodie Harper continues with her persuasive storytelling where a reader is rooting for characters and the setting is vivid and lively to feel all the hustle and bustle of an ancient Roman’s time.

This was a great sample and convinced me to pick up the final installment of the Wolf Den trilogy. Can't wait to see what Elodie does with the Boudicca series!

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed The Wolf Den I was delighted to have the opportunity to jump to book 3 and obtain an extract of The Temple of Fortuna.
It was as though I had only just finished the first novel.
I delayed reading it as I hoped to read the books in sequence, but really what is ten pages between friends. I need not have worried as the story seems to pick up again seamlessly despite missing out The House with the Golden Door, book 2 in this wonderful series in Pompeii, at the heart of the Roman Empire.
What marks these stories out for me are the strong female characters when women were hampered educationally and within society in general. These books further make the point of seeing the unfair world of AD79 through Amara’s who because of her Father’s debts fell into slavery and prostitution.
The writing of Elodie Harper is a pleasure to read. Vivid and engaging all your senses these are stories to enhance your quest to escape to distant lands. Trouble is within historical literature it has historical events to fit in and the knowledge of greater events beyond the characters daily activities makes this journey somewhat of a thriller.
Reading this extract has reminded me that I have two books to read and I better get on with it as a new year approaches. There is one resolution more easy to keep than most!!

Thank you to NetGalley for this extract. I have loved following Amara and this extract was a fantastic set up to what is set to be one of my most anticipated reads of 2023.

I had serious mixed feelings about The Wolf Den. I thought it was very well written but I hated the fact that the women had no agency, and thought it was too bleak.

I was unsure about reading the house with the golden door but decided to give it a chance and wow. I got character development in spades which I loved. I still had mixed feelings about Amara and her choices this time around. I got to one point where I put it down because I was very annoyed with Amara and wanted to scream. I kept thinking - I knew it! I knew I shouldn’t have read this book, because I knew it would frustrate me - but after about 10 mins of stewing and still not being able to sleep, I picked it up again. 2nd big mistake. I finished the book and looked up to daylight and the realization it was about 7am. Rest of my day was a mess but who cares?

I’ve been anxiously awaiting book 3 to see how everything erupts (Pompeii pun). From this extract - can’t wait to se how Amara navigates Rome and its politics. Would be interesting to learn more about Demetrius and catch up with Pliny again. Also can’t wait to see how she has to face the music back home and who will survive at the end.

My Five Word TL:DR Review : It Can’t Possibly End Here?

Well, I’ve just finished the final instalment of the Wolf Den Trilogy and Amara’s story. Although, clearly, given the ending, I’m thinking that the author may return to the series (or perhaps start a new series from the same period but from a different perspective – I certainly hope so and have my fingers crossed for such an outcome). What I will say straight away is that if you’ve been enjoying this series I think you’ll be very happy with this final episode. I don’t want to give away spoilers so I’ll avoid saying anything too revealing but this is a series that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

What a journey Elodie Harper has taken us on here, every book has contained different aspects from the tense start in the infamous Wolf’s Den where we first met Amara to her precarious rise in fortune that eventually sees her escape the Den to this final episode where she has become established as a courtesan in Rome with an influential patron. Of course, even with a wealthy patron and improved situation Amara misses her friends and family and Rome is not a place without it’s own convoluted politics and backstabbers so nothing can ever really be taken for granted.

Now, I don’t think it’s a spoiler if I mention here a certain historic event, that I think most people are aware of and that plays a large part, unsurprisingly, in this final chapter. Yes, Vesuvius and it’s fatal eruption that completely wiped Pompeii off the face of the map. To be fair, I thought this would play a large role in the final instalment and in fact it does, and I will say it makes for riveting reading, even though you’re aware of how this disaster eventually played out it’s absolutely compelling. I was hooked.

I love the way this series has been written. There’s a strong focus on female friendships and found family and although parts of the story will make you gasp out loud at the terrible misfortune that some of these people find themselves in there are no gratuitous scenes. The writing is a perfect combination of real events and people combined with fictional characters and a very easy to read style that I think struck the perfect balance. When I’m reading a story set in a different period I don’t expect the author to stick pedantically to speech patterns from way back when but at the same time I find it very grating when people use modern phrases, it just pulls me out of the story and I find it frustrating. Fortunately, that isn’t the case here at all and there’s also a great balance between details and back stories without any purple prose or info dumps.

Overall, I think this is one of my favourite series for a long while. It’s just a wonderful story of love and hope, persistence against the odds all set within a fascinating period of history. I loved this final episode and I’m keeping this review fairly short because I really don’t want to give too much away and spoil the conclusion for others, not because I don’t want to gush uncontrollably.

One of my favourite series of all time about the ancient world.
I’m terribly sad for this to end, as i haven’t found anything quite like this that truly captures the raw emotions felt by the women that were enslaved and wanting to progress for safety in the ancient world.
I can’t wait to see what further projects Elodie Harper works on in future. I seriously hope we may get some of these characters again.

Beautifully done!

I absolutely adored this! Not only because it was just as riveting and jaw dropping as the first two instalments but because it managed to have the best and most fitting end, leaving me feeling satisfied with my commitment to the series.

If you have not started The Wolf Den, then please do because The Temple of Fortuna has brought the emotion of the first and second books and brought it full circle and given a conclusion that is emotional yet liberating.

Amara continues to be the ambitious and determined woman that we know from the previous books and while i understand so many of her motives, her ever present and undeniable snobbery really irked me. I understood all she went through, all she did to rise above her station but there were some moments in this and the other books that i really wanted to punch her for being, basically, a stuck up bitch. I cant say much without spoilers but my only criticism would be that even at the end, for me, Amara was very unlikeable. There is the knowledge that she is aware of her selfishness which can almost allow her some redemption but her thoughts towards an old friend at a pivotal stage in her survival, really made me dislike her.

Her attitude took nothing away from the story for me though and that was a major reason for loving it all the way through. As with the other books, there was always the sense of doom that you couldnt quite shake which made it so exciting. Not just for the obvious eruption of Mount Vesuvius but all the other dangers surrounding Amara's life.
The descriptions of the destruction of Pompeii was really immersive and the way people grabbed at the chance to essentially reinvent themselves while others wanted to continue in the old ways, was so heartbreaking for me.

In short, I loved it and cant wait to hold the official copy in my hands.

A very, very short extract, not enough to really get much of an impression, but possibly something that would appeal to young adults.

One of my all time favourite series, I loved this excerpt and I can not wait to read the full novel, eagerly anticipating receiving my copy!

Now that I had a sneak peak, I’m dying to read the rest. I have really enjoyed the writing style so far and can definitely see myself buying this book as it comes out.

An evocative and beautiful end to the trilogy. This is only going to be a short review as I only had access to a short sample of the novel. I was hooked from the very first page, the writing style was poetic, the developing plot engaging, and the characters exceptionally well rounded. The writing style was immersive, the world created was like artwork and the historical accuracy allowed you to completely immerse yourself within these pages. This is a book that I will be reading as soon as it is published.
