A nice collection of crochet stitches. I would have enjoyed having some names or a bit more information. It would have turned something fun into something useful.

This is a flip calendar that introduces a stitch for everyday of the year with instructions and illustrations. Many familiar but some unusual patterns are here. A perfect gift to yourself or a friend. It will fit in your craft bag.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. As an intermediate crocheter, I appreciate the variety of stitches portrayed as well as the variance of difficulty levels. I don’t know if I would necessarily use this book in the classroom unless it was relevant to the curriculum, but I would absolutely still recommend it to anyone (peer or student) who shows an interest in the subject.

As an avid crocheter I can say that this book has a lot of potential to bring a lot of creativity to other fiber artists projects. Separated by difficulty and type of stitch this book provides a ton inspiration! A beginner crocheter may have a hard time creating a project with just the stitch instructions, but the book would be a very good tool to practice hook and tension control. I would have liked to see more pictures, but overall a well thought out craft book.

Such a handy and neat way to find new stitches to try. After you use the calendar, keep it as a handy stitch dictionary to always refer back to when needed. I liked the wide array of stitch patterns presented.

Really handy and useful book, for the likes of me who is a beginner.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

A Year of Crochet Stitches is a concise perpetual calendar of one-a-day stitch patterns collected and curated by Jill Wright. Released 7th Nov 2023 by Rowman & Littlefield on their Stackpole imprint, it's 408 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. This is a sister volume to A Year of Knitting Stitches, from the same publisher and follows a similar format.

Precisely what it says on the cover, this is a collection of daily crochet patterns including lace, textured stitches, simple edgings, and colorwork, arranged by calendar date, 1st Jan to 31st Dec. Each day is a single page, with a color photo of the finished pattern, written directions, and with a required stitch count for each repeat. The pictures on each page are not huge, but they are clear, and in color.

Comparatively, there are some really nice designs here which are new and -not- included in any commonly available crochet dictionary. They're generally smaller repeats and less intensive/difficult than, for example, the Japanese pattern dictionaries. That being said, there is no basic how-to-crochet tutorial included here. The author has included some general how-to at the back of the collection and a couple of very basic shawl/stole/scarf recipes which show readers some potential ways to adapt the stitches in the collection, as well as some advice for yarn selection.

Four stars, although there's very little that 100% new and innovative with crochet (humans have been doing it for a very long time), this collection is full of small simple repeats which are useful. Absolutely recommended for the crafter's home collection, public or school library acquisition, fibre arts guilds' libraries, maker's groups, and similar. It would also make a welcome gift for a fibre-happy friend.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A great book for if you're interested in trying out new stitches. Plenty of instruction and ideas. The perfect start to a new year.

A good idea, which has been very poorly executed.

The patterns do not have names! This is a simple requirement. It is a very strange omission.

The layout of the book and unprofessional photography really lets it down. I am an experienced crocheter, but know I would not enjoy this using this resource.

To be visually appealing and useful it needs to be reworked and redesigned. For example: patterns need to be complete, seasonal colours and yarns would make it much more striking, photographs need to be of clearer quality and properly sized so finer stitch details can be seen, each pattern should be dated (including for leap years!) Attractive headings detailing pattern names must included. Perhaps an idea of difficulty of stitches could be incorporated? Novice crocheters could mix and match motifs at the beginning of the year; choosing one star patterns and moving on to three star designs by the end of the year, as they become more experienced.

Additionally, projects could be much more creative and with a greater choice of items included, after all there are a wealth of items which can be made from a year’s worth of motifs!

This could have been so good. I was excited to be granted an e-copy. I know lots of crocheters who would aim to make a motif a day throughout the year, then make them into blankets, cushion covers or wearable items.

If this is completely redesigned I would be very interested in looking at it again.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to look at an advance copy of this resource.

Excellent seemingly neverending list of interesting crochet stitches, described step by step, with Phil included if each one. A handy references for crocheters.

This is a perpetual calendar with each day focusing on a different crochet stitch. I really like that this is a perpetual calendar that I can use for a long time and use as a reference.

I started crocheting in November 2022 with a Wobbles kit. I have focused on making amigurumi which uses about ten different stitches. I had **NO** idea that there were this many stitches possible - let alone enough for an entire calendar.

I love how this calendar has a different focus each month. For example, February has a focus on bobble stitches. It also appears as though the stitches get more and more difficult throughout the year.

I am planning on buying the spiral bound version of this (I reviewed an electronic copy.) to begin using in 2024!

Although I am new to crocheting, I enjoyed learning about new stitches and edges. The organization of the stitches is great. I hope to try some of these stitches with the students in crochet club. It’s a great resource to help me better my crochet stitch knowledge.

This was an interesting book for those who love crochet and learning stitches. However, I would say it is not for a true beginner of crochet. For those who love crochet, it would be a great gift.
