Molly Hennigan's grandmother is in the psychiatric unit of the hospital, where Molly regularly visits her. She thinks a lot about her relationship with her grandmother and how it changes through the years and as circumstances change. She considers the possible connection/similarities between her great-grandmother's admission to Irish mental hospitals and her grandmother's time in and out of the modern equivalent, noting the fact that women who do not conform to societal expectations have been and often still are labelled mentally ill, whether or not that is true. She comes to terms with her own feelings about her grandmother, herself, and their relationship with each other, each visit bringing up new emotions and thoughts to consider. She also shares parts of her own life story as she navigates through her own journey. This was a very thought-provoking, insightful, and even uplifting book that is extremely well-written. It will stay with me for quite a while and I highly recommend it.
