Twisted domestic thriller with vengeful housekeeper and dark family secrets.
A mysterious housekeeper arrives at the Warner home after Lola's death, claiming to help widower Evan and his young daughter Jessica. But she's harboring secrets of her own and believes Evan murdered his wife.
Shiner builds tension through the housekeeper's dual mission of caring for the family while searching for evidence of murder, creating an atmosphere where every interaction feels loaded with danger.
Todd Kramer and Kate Handford share narration duties effectively, with each bringing distinct voices to their characters. Their delivery captures the paranoia and manipulation that drives the story forward. The dual perspective works well as we follow both the housekeeper's investigation and the family's grief, though you quickly realize nobody is being entirely honest about their motivations.
What kept me turning pages was how Shiner drops hints about the housekeeper's connection to Lola without revealing too much too soon. The discovery of Lola's diary provides a nice turning point that shifts everything you thought you knew about this family. The house itself becomes almost a character, with its hidden corners and discarded mail telling their own story.
Good psychological suspense that plays with reader expectations. Shiner knows how to build domestic tension and delivers the kind of twists that make you want to go back and catch what you missed.

Emily Shiner delivers a chilling psychological thriller in The Woman in the Photo, a story steeped in secrets, shifting identities, and suspense that grips from the very first page. Perfect for fans of domestic thrillers, this novel explores how one photo can unravel an entire life.
The story follows Lily, a woman trying to rebuild her life after a devastating loss. When she comes across an old photo featuring her late husband—and a woman she’s never seen before, everything she thought she knew is called into question.
Shiner’s writing is sharp and atmospheric, capturing the paranoia and emotional weight of Lily’s journey. She does an excellent job creating complex characters whose motives remain ambiguous until the very end. The pacing is swift, with just enough red herrings to keep readers guessing without becoming confusing.
If you’re drawn to thrillers that explore the fragility of relationships and the dark truths that lie beneath seemingly perfect lives, The Woman in the Photo is a must-read. It’s a compulsive page-turner that will keep you questioning who to trust... right up to the final shocking twist.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)

Girl… this book gave gaslight, guilt trips, and a twisty diary reveal I did not see coming.
Creepy, clever, and binge worthy, The Wife in the Photo is psychological suspense served ice cold. Periodt.
The Wife in the Photo is a fast-paced psychological thriller that hooks you from page one and doesn't let up. A grieving husband, a mysterious housekeeper, and a daughter caught in the middle….this story had all the makings of a domestic nightmare wrapped in charm and control. What stood out to me was the subtle build of tension and the brilliant use of a diary to flip the narrative mid-story. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another layer unraveled.

I always enjoy psychological thrillers so this one was no different for me, add in the fact it was a domestic psychological thriller and I am all in! Some of this was a little easy to predict what was going to happen but for me that didn't take away from the story, I still enjoyed being along for the ride and having the author show me how the story would unfold.

This was quite an enjoyable book to listen to, with a great narrator and questionable characters. I really thought I knew how the book would end, but I was so wrong.

The Woman in the Photo by Emily Shiner is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. Shiner masterfully builds tension with shocking twists, unreliable characters, and a creeping sense of dread. Perfect for fans of domestic thrillers, this novel will have you questioning every clue until the very end.
Thank you so much Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

Edge of your seat thriller. I kept guessing and thought I was right and turns out I was very wrong.

An incredible book with wonderful characters and a beautiful setting. It will keep you guessing until the end.

"The Wife in the Photo" is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The story is told from the perspective of a housekeeper who is determined to uncover the truth about her former friend's murder, even if it means putting herself in danger. The plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.
The author does a fantastic job of creating a tense and atmospheric setting, with a sprawling mansion filled with secrets and hidden agendas. The characters are well-drawn and complex, with motivations that are not always clear, and the dialogue is sharp and believable.
What sets this book apart from other thrillers is the emotional depth and nuance that the author brings to the story. The housekeeper's complicated feelings towards the victim and her husband add an extra layer of complexity to the plot, and the themes of grief, betrayal, and revenge are handled with sensitivity and insight.
Overall, "The Wife in the Photo" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. It's a gripping and sophisticated novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend it.

3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4. This book (especially the audio) was a bit of a slow burn for me. It was too easy to guess "whodunnit" and I found all the characters a bit irritating and frustratingly stupid in some instances. It was however well narrated, and I liked the fact that a man narrated the male character and a woman, the female one. I have to say I preferred Emily Shiner's other book that I read much more (You can't hide).
The basic story line is that Evan's wife falls down the porch stairs and dies. Ariel suspects that Evan pushed her and takes on the job of housekeeper to find proof of his guilt. Meanwhile Evan's 14-year-old daughter is being very difficult, and Ariel has a hard time dealing with her. No more to avoid any spoiler alerts.

Finished this in 24 hours. Couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. Shocking ending thank you NetGalley and publisher for providing this advanced copy to me.

This was such a powerful book that I think will stick with me for a long time. I love a psychological thriller and the darker the better. I think the dual POVs added to the intrigue and had me questioning everything and everyone. I felt like the twists and turns were plotted perfectly to make you feel like you knew the truth til you are 'drip fed' another piece of the puzzle. All the characters had unlikeable, dubious elements to their personality leaving me asking constant questions. I love the fact that the end was left open to interpretation. A great 5 Star read that I couldn't read fast enough.

While the overall plot is excellent and full of potential, there were just too many implausible twists that took away from the story. I listened to the audiobook though and have to say that both narrators are really good and may have played a role in ensuring that I finished the book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.

This was such a twisted story and it keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s next. The narrators did such an awesome job and kept you interested.

I truly loved this! This psychological suspense is full of twisted turns and had me reading on the edge of my seat!
Todd Kramer, & Kate Handford were lovely narrators.
Thank you, Emily Shiner, Bookouture Audio & netgalley for my audiobook! All opinions are my own.

First by this author and as cliche as it is, it literally had me on the edge of my seat. Great audio to keep my interest but the storyline was fantastic. Can't wait to check out more by this author!

A slow start and thought it was abit predictable. Was entertaining enough to keep me interested with multiple unreliable narrators. .

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audio book! This thriller had a very intriguing premise, but it was just a little too over the top for me. The plot was unrealistic and outlandish, and the characters fell flat in their development. There are definitely interesting plot twists that keep the reader guessing throughout.

The Wife in the Photo is a psychological thriller full of red herrings and twists. The story is told from the point of view of Lola through her diary after she is found dead from a fall, her husband, daughter and new housekeeper. Fans of this genre will enjoy the book but I found it far fetched with an unsatisfactory conclusion.
