First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley and Del Rey UK for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

A Fate Inked in Blood is Danielle L. Jensen’s new adult fantasy series in which we follow a young woman named Freya as she is forced to reveal to a jarl that she possesses a drop of Hlin’s blood, which makes her the shield maiden prophesied to unite Skaland beneath the one who controls her fate. As she is forcely bound to him, she must train to fight and become the warrior she always dreamt of becoming, as well as to control her magic, protected by the jarl’s son himself, Bjorn.

This book is the first one from Danielle L. Jensen that I read in English, and I am not very familiar with Norse mythology, so I originally thought it would be a fiasco. But guess what? This book is one of my favourite reads of the year so far, and let me explain to you the reasons why.
The plot is made in a particular way in which you dive straight into the story. It is fast-paced, yet you still have enough time to understand what is going on and the identity of the different characters. There are a lot of actions and twists and turns, so there is no real moment where you feel bored. The worldbuilding and magic system are based off of Norse mythology, I don’t really know anything about it but it sounded very coherent, and I have to say that I loved the fact that some humans are considered as “children of the Gods” because they have a drop of their magic. The characters feel very life-like and I loved that: they are warriors, and I feel like Vikings are often depicted as heartless monsters, but they still feel emotions, they behave, they make mistakes, like humans. The end got me gasping at 1AM because I had anticipated one thing but not the other one.
I also loved this book because it is full of tropes that I like: the “chosen one” ; forbidden love ; one bed ; forced proximity ; are the main characters enemies, friends or lovers? ; slow-burn, betrayal…

I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

"A Fate Inked in Blood" by Danielle L. Jensen is an enthralling narrative set in a Norse-inspired world, where the destinies of its characters are intertwined with prophecies, political strife, and forbidden romance. At its core is Freya, a shield maiden burdened with a divine heritage and thrust into a perilous journey by the treachery of her husband and the ambitions of a power-hungry Jarl. Despite facing relentless adversity, Freya emerges as a beacon of resilience, her unwavering determination and selflessness making her a compelling protagonist.
Jensen's portrayal of Freya is a testament to her skill in character development, as she deftly navigates the complexities of duty, desire, and destiny. Likewise, the dynamics between Freya and Bjorn, the Jarl's son tasked with protecting her, are imbued with tension and passion, adding depth to their forbidden attraction. Their evolving relationship serves as a poignant anchor amidst the turmoil of political intrigue and magical conflict.
The world-building in "A Fate Inked in Blood" is rich and immersive, drawing readers into a meticulously crafted realm where Norse mythology meets original lore. Jensen's prose is evocative and vivid, capturing the essence of the Viking era with its raw authenticity and palpable atmosphere. While the pacing may feel swift at times, and certain plot twists predictable, these minor shortcomings do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the novel.
In conclusion, "A Fate Inked in Blood" is a captivating blend of fantasy and romance, offering readers a gripping tale of adventure, sacrifice, and forbidden love. Danielle L. Jensen's masterful storytelling and vivid world-building make this novel a compelling read for fans of the genre, leaving them eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Saga of Unfated.

I ate this book up, what a bloody whirlwind. Incredibly fast paced with so much tension and grit, I couldn’t put it down. Freya’s nickname (do you call it that?) is born-in-fire and it’s wickedly accurate because her character is FIRE! Her passion, her determination and strength make for a fierce FMC that you can’t help but love, even when you’re screaming at her to make different choices.

My one tiny gripe is that I easily figured out the big *twist* super early on, so some of the end fell a little flat. That aside, this story was really well written, the characters hit you in the feels (the good, the bad and the ugly) and I loved every second of this adventure. Can’t wait for the next one!

Synopsis:

In her small fishing village we find Freya, trapped in a loveless marriage and dreaming of being the warrior she was trained by her father to be. This dream, however unlikely, soon becomes a reality when her husband’s betrayal leads to a massive revelation Freya has been hiding all her life - in a fight to the death, forced by her region’s jarl, she evokes the protection of a goddess, revealing the drop of divine blood she has that repels attack. She is the heralded shield-maiden, and her unique magic is foretold to unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the king who controls her.

Believing that he’s the one destined to rule all of Skaland, the jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his son, the fiery Bjorn, to shadow her every move. She must train, learn to control her magic, face tests set by the gods and fend off multiple enemies from every direction, but her greatest test may be resisting Bjorn and their growing, but forbidden, attraction...

My thoughts:

I was really gripped by this book and honestly didn’t want to put it down. Norse influences, quests, prophecies, forced proximity, forbidden lovers, banter and great pacing…A Fate Inked in Blood has it all, and after that ending I really can’t wait for book two. A massive thank you to Netgalley and Del Rey for the e-ARC.

I first heard about this book from @silvylinings and this did not disappoint at all. The entire time I felt like I was holding at the edge of my seat and if it wasn’t for adulting I would’ve gobbled this up in one go. I loved Freya instantly because of how much of a fighter she is and her very first encounter with Bjorn was just perfect.

This book had just the right amount of everything - world building, romance, banter, twists and turns, pacing, chemistry, writing — basically everything about this book was on point for me. This will definitely not be the last Danielle Jensen that I’ll read - think she’s an autobuy author for me even after just one book.

I love how Bjorn supported Freya no matter how crazy she gets and that after everyone has failed her Bjorn showed her that it is possible to have someone to be in your corner.

I also love the fact that this involved Norse Mythology. I am now open to all viking inspired recs out there. I love game of thrones so the politics in this book was 🤌 as well as all the drama, secrets and mystery circulating around the characters. Of course I have characters in the book that I just loved to hate too!

I cannot count the times that I LOLd because of Freya and Bjorn’s banter — they were just serving sarcasm one after another to each other plus their super witty exchange — I’m obsessed with it! Oh man, Bjorn was just perfect too - not too swoony, not too broody - I could feel their chemistry pop out of the book. This is a slow burn but man was the pay off mind blowing! I feel like this is not gonna be the last time I’m gonna be talking about this book so get ready to be fed up of me. Thanks to @netgalley @delreybooks @randomhouse ! 🌟

This book was SUCH a good read. I want more!

I'm obsessed with Norse Mythology so the fact this book was based within this, with vikings, battles, gods...I loved it! The magic system is perfect, we got information on it to understand the world and its elements but it was also not too intense or mind numbing. World building was great and very well detailed without feeling like you were overwhelmed.

I do feel like the pacing was a bit slow but it's made up for with a butt ton of sexual tension, SLOW BURN and forced proximity. The romance in this was very satisfying to read! I won't say much in order to avoid spoilers!

Jensen's magic is at play once again! Steeped in Norse mythology and meticulous world-building, every moment of this gripping romantasy is pure delight.

Freya, a formidable shield maiden, and Bjorn, an irresistibly compelling character, create immense chemistry to the story. Amid malevolent figures, clan conflicts, love and betrayal, the narrative skillfully keeps readers engrossed and obsessed!

3.5⭑

A Fate Inked In Blood is the first book I’ve read by Danielle L Johnson and also the first Nordic inspired fantasy I’ve read which I quite enjoyed.

Freya is a great protagonist to read about. She has always wanted to be a warrior but has had to keep to herself because of the secret that she has goddess blood in her and some incredible powers that go along with that. However she is trapped in a forced loveless marriage with an older man who doesn’t care about her.

I loved the plot and find everything to do with gods/goddesses so intriguing. The plot was also balanced very well with the romance that Freya has with her husband’s son. Their connection was so good and the forbidden aspect created great tension between them.

I did find some of the world building a little bit slow to get into and something happens in this book, that I personally do not enjoy reading in books so this is what dampened my enjoyment during the last third of the book.

With that being said, I still liked this book and I will definitely be picking up book two when it comes out.

Thank you NetGalley and Del Rey UK for sending me an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have been a huge fan of Danielle’s work The bridge kingdom being one of my favourite trilogy’s I read in 2023 so when I seen this was available for request I had to request it and was so pleased to be approved.

A Fate Inked in Blood is a slow burn Viking fantasy. I loved the strong character lead of Freya who has for years kept her magic under wraps I thought it brave for Danielle to branch out in to the Viking world but I do think it needed a little more research into the Viking world.

Apart from that overall I gave this a 4star I did enjoy it and will be picking up a beautiful special edition 😍

Freya is stuck on a loveless marriage in a small village, when her paths cross with a mysterious stranger. Little did she realise how this encounter would change her future, when a fight leads to a long hidden power being exposed

Thrown into a world of Kings, Wars and Prophecies - Freya needs to find her place and with Bjorn as her protector, she just might make it thought. Although his father being the King complicates matters, for everyone involved

Fast paced, action packed and great relationship and family dynamics. Thanks to NetGalley and Del Rey for the review copy of this book. Finishing a book in one sitting is always a good sign. Especially when that sitting keeps you up past bedtime on a Sunday night!

I'm one of those people never having read a Danielle L. Jensen book before. It's not because her books don't speak to me. I'm pretty sure three of her books have been rotting away on the shelves for years already and another one has been pre-ordered. I just never got to reading them. So, when I saw this book being available on Netgalley I didn't hesitate and requested a copy. I was very happy that Del Rey granted me one!

I had already expected that I would need some time to get used to the setting. However, I was used to the setting much quicker than I had hoped and expected. That's mostly because the author does an awesome job explaining what needs to be explained, but never loses herself in endless descriptions and loads of details. I guess that's partly because the setting is far from the most important part of this story.

Because that's the culture and most of all the Gods. Although this book has quite a lot of fantasy elements it never feels like a fantasy novel. And that's because all those elements fit into this world so naturally. The characters are used to them, to them the Gods have been there for as long as they can remember. Magic is a part of their daily life. Monsters are real. And some people are blessed by the Gods with special powers and fates.

Our heroine, Freya, is one of those people and she's an amazing heroine and a total product of her time and ancestors. I have to admit that there were moments I really wondered why she allowed her anger to lead her, why she was so focussed on vengeance and fighting. The finale of the book however answered these questions perfectly. I can't wait to read what's waiting for her and Bjorn in the sequel. It's clear the next phase of their lives will be far from easy. Like nothing has been so far.

“You don't attack the strong when you're weak, Freya. You bide your time.”

Freya is a in loveless marriage with a blessed-by-the-gods husband who only abuses his gifts. When Freya is betrayed for the sought-after gift she holds, she walks the line between being the warrior she dreamed of becoming or just a weapon for another power-hungry male.

There was a lot to love about A Fate Inked in Blood. Danielle L. Jensen can write a cracking female main character and I love how she explores power and rage with Freya. Female anger is not something that is always done well but when it is, it can capture a disarming and relatable host of emotions in the reader. I felt that way about ‘Girl, Goddess, Queen and I think Freya embodies a similar vein. Except in this Norse mythology Viking tale, Freya is at the epicentre of kings and war and wants to find her place in it. All the characters are a real stand-out in this tale, complex and flawed men and women, from Freya’s family to the king's son, Bjorn, who has vowed to protect her but must fight their forbidden growing attraction.

The pace was a bit slow at first, and although it sped up, it did seem to be a bit all over the place. I think partially because there was a lot of set-up for book two and the emphasis on character development (which I did enjoy!) meant there were little bubbles of character-building scenes. However, I liked the world-building, and I could see it all come to life as I read.

Despite the blurb, I didn’t expect there to be such an emphasis on betrayal throughout the book. It’s not my favourite theme and one I struggled with in Jensen’s other series. It was potentially the one aspect that really read similarly to ‘The Bridge Kingdom’ for me. I can appreciate Jensen’s exploration of it and how well it links into an analysis of morality but at my heart, I’m a found family lover. I mention this because I think it played a part in it not being rated even higher and I’m unsure whether I will continue the series but I think it’s a theme others might love!

This was so good! It was very easy to read and went at a rapid pace. There's a lot going on, but it doesn't feel sped through in a negative way, just action packed. I liked the romance, as well as the complex relationships between other characters, family loyalties and friendships and how reciprocal they were.
I found it easy to get my head around who everyone was and how they related to one another, including the tribes etc. I sometimes find with Norse/Greek gods type books that you need a fairly good understanding of all the gods before you start and the way they interlink can be quite complicated. I know next to nothing about Norse gods and it didn't matter, everything was explained and clear.
I will say, a couple of the 'twists'/'secrets' were very obvious right from the first mention of them, one to the point where I can't imagine that there wasn't even one person that would have thought 'hmm, that phrasing is a little odd, wonder if there's more to it?', but it was still a good time regardless. Can't wait to see how that particular thing develops! I'm now wondering how long I have to wait until the sequel?! I also like how we were left at the end of this one. It's a major place we're left, but not a really dramatic cliffhanger, like mid-fight or something, so it's not a really tense, painful place to have to wait from.
Fun book and a great time, would recommend!

I've been a fan of Danielle L. Jensen for years now, and I have to admit that A Fate Inked in Blood is my favorite of her books to date! Freya is a killer protagonist (pun intended?) with a unique magic that I haven't seen in many fantasy novels. This Viking tale sees Freya become the fabled shield maden, struggling to find out who she is and who she can be when no longer anyone's thumb.

Also, this book has crafted perhaps my favorite introduction to a love interest ever. I'll let you read it and be the judge! But I was in hysterics.

Jensen's continues her tradition of creating stories filled with intense detail and worldbuilding, making it clear that she truly put in the work to explore the cultures and themes she was writing about. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I'm excited for the sequel!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this ARC!

This was such a good slow burn viking fantasy that had me hooked the entire way through. It's beautifully written with the most lovable and hate worthy characters who are all either trying to rewrite their destiny or achieve it.
I knew this book was going to be a good one with the perfect balance of world building, romance and plot when i read this line;
“It is hard to keep one’s wits when faced with a woman as beautiful as the sight of shore to a man who has been lost at sea.”
I mean come. On.

We follow Freya as she learns to come to grips with the magic coursing through her veins, realises that maybe everyone she knows doesn't have her best interests at heart, and slowly starts to fall in love with the enemies son.
Honestly, this book is an absolute roller-coaster of emotions and plot, with something happening on every other page to keep you engaged and wondering where the story is going to end, and boy was that a FREAKING CLIFFHANGER!!! I MEAN HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO US????

This was my first time reading a book by this author, but it didn't disappoint at all. It was a lot more to take in world building wise than i am used to, so i did struggle a bit with feeling like my head was going to explode, but in the best way possible. The magic system was amazing, and i love that not only have we got really interesting characters throughout, but that the viking gods are actually real, not just part of their culture, and that they choose to bless some children with their power. Makes for some really interesting power dynamics and fight scenes.

I cannot wait to find out what happens in book two, because again, that freaking ending!! It was such a good cliffhanger to be left on, leaves so many things open for what might happen, and honestly, i just NEED to know if Bjorn and Freya are able to get over what happened and end up together again... mostly because Bjorn was such a freaking sweetheart and i think he really did have only the best in mind for her. Shame he went about it in the wrong way...

A Fate Inked in Blood is a slow burn Viking fantasy. I loved the strong character lead of Freya as her magic which she has kept secret for years becomes known. She is the shield bearer with magic from Hlin, a seer has foretold that whoever commands her will be king of all Skaland.

Freya undergoes many tests of the Gods and tries to fight her attraction to Bjorn who is the son of her husband Snorri. It is amazing what she will do to protect her family and villagers.

A great story with some super twists at the end, I cannot wait to read the sequel

“It is hard to keep one’s wits when faced with a woman as beautiful as the sight of shore to a man who has been lost at sea.”

AAAAAAH, my very first Danielle L. Jensen book!!! I've been wanting to give her books a try for the longest time, very happy I started with this one.

First off, the vibes were very similar to John Gwynne's Bloodsworn Saga, so if you liked that there's a high chance you'll love this too. Only, this has a lot more romance than that series. Though I wouldn't say it was the main focus of the story, even if it was a bit part of the plot.

Mainly we follow Freya's journey from a fishmonger's wife to a skilled warrior and shield maiden of legend. What I love most about her is her rage, need for revenge and how stubborn she is. I'd gladly watch her burn the whole world down again and again.

She's also very protective of her family (even when they don't deserve it), and constantly sacrifices herself for their wellbeing. My girl can't catch a break. There's not a single thing she wants that she can get without cost.

Bjorn is one of those things, someone who seemingly doesn't want to use her, listens to her, protects her...but Freya is married to his father (not the fishmonger, yet another unwanted marriage/sacrifice on her part).

I'm actually surprised at how long it took the two of them to really get together. In that regard it's kind of a slow burn, but there are scenes here and there where they tease each other, or you think something more is gonna happen (a few times it did).

I really liked their romance for the most part, though Bjorn could annoy me when he annoyed Freya too. Just let her get her revenge!! Is it really that hard? Gosh.

I will say that he had some good lines, as evident by the one at the top of my review. That one is probably my fave.

The plot was easy to follow, and the mythology brought it all together nicely. I love the concept of humans having a drop of a god's blood and then having abilities to match the god that blessed them.

I think I guessed pretty much all the twists early on so the clues were good, and honestly I enjoy being right so it was great to go "aha I KNEW IT" so many times at the end.

The ending is the most chaotic part of the book, but in a good way. Because you get all the reveals, some betrayals, Freya goes a little bonkers, what's not to love. I'm super curious about what's going to happen next, I can't predict it yet. I sure do have some ideas though.

---------------------------

I was very curious to read more by this author, after reading The Bridge Kingdom, and above all to read it in the original language.
The reading was really very smooth and easy to read, and I found in many elements of this book the same style used in Bridge Kingdom, even slightly more mature.
However, there are also some small flaws, which those fascinated by Nordic mythology and the Vikings will probably have noticed. Many scenes and settings in the book seemed to me to be totally copied from the Vikings TV series or the Skyrim video game. He definitely drew inspiration from these series and from Norse mythology in general, and so I don't blame her, especially because the result was really good.
I liked the story, even though I had glimpsed the twists and turns from miles away, especially the final one. It was all going too well in those last few chapters! It was absolutely too weird!
I really appreciated Bjorn, but the protagonist Freya really has too many flaws in the construction of her character. There were truly a thousand opportunities for her to get out of the problematic situation she was in, but no... she was determined to stay! All the suffering that has happened to her, she really deserves it all... how I would have liked to slap her from morning till night!

I have to say that the plot construction is good, you get new information little by little, but the secondary characters really make you hate their existence and presence within the story. And it's one of the mistakes I suffered from the most. I usually get very fond of secondary characters, but here none managed to win me over.
I'm curious to understand where the author is going with the next book, and I seriously hope the protagonist doesn't sulk for long, because she definitely has no reason to, after all the stupid things she's done!

Thanks Netgalley for letting me preview it! I can't wait to get my paper copy!

I have been looking forward to reading this one for so long! I loved the bridge Kingdom series and knew a Norse story from Danielle would be that extra bit of deliciousness!!

And from literally the first few chapters I was greedily obsessed with Freya and Bjorn. An unhealthy amount of obsessed.
I can’t stop thinking about them, ugh

The tension and slow burn had me in pain but was oh so worth the wait 🥵

There was one big kind of event happening but you know, we didn’t know who it was or whatever, I thought it was super obvious what was happening but I don’t think it was meant to be that big of a twist. So when that was revealed it was like oh okay yeah, but then BAM! Like three more twists followed, wtf I am stunned, jaw is dropped, can’t speak.

So I correctly predicted the obvious thing but then twist and twist and twist shook me up and I don’t even know what to do now.

A really good story, loved the setting and the spicy romance and clearly with plenty of twists and turns that kept me hooked! I’m begging for the next instalment as soon as possible! You can’t leave me hanging like that Danielle!

After discovering this author when reading her Bridge series I fell in-love with her writing and just how beautifully she can write to transport you.

This book follows Freya, who’s always wanted and dreamed to be a warrior. Instead life thrown her into a marriage with a man she can’t stand, you think it can’t possibly get worse than this right? Wronnnng!

This douchnozzle her and now she has to fight to the death with regions’s jarl’s son- Bjorn. During this fight her secret is revealed- she is a shield maiden.

Hooray right? Nope, not yet.
Forced into another marriage with a man that only wants to use her, so here the cycle begins again. Until she begins to develop feelings for her new husband’s son *you guessed it* Bjorn.

I love the absolute balance of this book, there is war and tension and edge of your seat what will be the next move but on the other hand Freya and Bjorn’s relationship banter counter balanced so perfectly. The protectiveness is what did it for me, seriously🤌🏻
Then there is magic in the mix as well so all and all just buckets load to keep you entertained and completely transport you.

Everything you want in a good fantasy read!
