Thanks NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!

Japanese side: 5/5 stars
American side: 4/5 stars

This was a really cool horror anthology! I really enjoyed each story from the Japanese authors, the American ones were pretty good but the mirror one was really confusing at the end. I LOVE how you just flip the book for which version you want to read, it's such a cool concept! I really really enjoyed this, and each story's different graphic style was fun to read and view. Fantastic!

Best part about it was the cover.
Entirely made up of forgettable stories with no point other than trying to shock the reader in inane ways.
Which is sad because the concept of the book being read from both sides in the Japanese and the English style was interesting.

Thanks to netgalley for this arc.

As usual, absolutely flawless. Junji Ito's art is just mindblowing every time. And of course, the stories are horrifying in the best way!

This was an interesting collection of short horror manga, but ultimately, it was a bit underwhelming. I enjoyed a couple of the stories (Mirror, Mirror was my favourite) but I found them all a bit too short and quite disjointed. The format was fun, as you can read the book from the front for the American stories and then from the back for the Japanese stories and the art was great and varied but it was all a bit forgettable for me.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a really interesting way of combining 3 Japanese authors and 3 American authors to be read in their natural format by meeting in the middle, but the majority of the stories fell flat. I preferred the American stories since they seemed to have more depth and feel a little bit more natural whereas the Japanese ones went by too fast or far too slowly. Overall, I think this a good collection with a solid variety in the selections from how strange the stories are, how different the art styles are, and how scary each one is as well.

This horror manga anthology is extra fun due to the split format. There is no back to the book, only the English story front and the Japanese story front, and you have to flip half-way through. All of the stories are intriguing ones, and I believe this is one of the better horror manga books I have read recently. Fans of Junji Ito will be thrilled with this anthology.

i’ll be completely honest, i kind of hated this. i had really high hopes, with a cover and foreword by junji ito, and thought the stories would follow suit. however, all of these authors need to learn how to show instead of tell. i felt like every single story was so heavy handed in their description of the plot instead of giving actual action, and some of the art in the stories felt really clunky and unfinished. the story with the kappa was the most aesthetically pretty, but still suffered from the “telling instead of showing” conundrum. i’m sure these artists and authors have the ability create good work but this collection just bored me to death.

Reading this digitally was actually very difficult so I waited to review this until I could have a physical copy in hand. Betwixt consists of 6 horror short stories and with any collection there are stand-outs and mediocre stories. Overall I loved being able to get a sense of multiple different authors styles but it did feel a bit messy as a whole collection. I also thought that Junji Ito would have a story in here seeing as he did the cover art but he doesn't and that is a bit misleading to me.

“Betwixt: A Horror Manga Anthology consists of six short stories revealing the universal fear of the space between the known and unknown. In one of my favorite short stories, “The Window” the creator explores ideas that haunt women even after their deaths: femicide, feudalism, and lookism, which turn the suffering of women into ghost stories. Then, in another story, “Shadow,” cat owner and concept artist Huahua Zhu weaves a tale about an abandoned black cat and the girl who finds it, a story I loved because it reminds me of my adorable black hellion with watery eyes.” -Rebecca Oliver Kaplan, The Mary Sue

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

I do love a horror anthology! Especially one that features so many talented artists and storytellers. There were of course a couple of standouts, the first story about the SPOILER: body in the ice, really caught my attention.

This was a good collection of stories and great introduction to various authors' horror short stories in manga and graphic novel form.

Thank you to NetGalley for the arc. I requested this manga short story collection because one of my favorite artists was featured in the story. I sincerely enjoyed her work - (the mirror) and highly recommend that spooky story! However, after the next story - the short stories seemed to be out of order or have no sense to them? I think it might have been the format or maybe I am just misunderstanding but the next couple of short stories made no sense to me at all and if felt like we were building up to something and then it cut off. Not sure if that was just a preview but I feel like I can’t accurately star review this because I think something was off about the format. But loved that mirror story!

I really enjoy reading anthologies, it’s like a sampler of different art styles. Thank you Viz Media for the ARC!

Betwixt is a horror anthology that’s split into two reading styles, meaning the book has no true front/back cover. I think that’s a neat idea for print books. Sadly, it doesn’t work as well digitally but I still enjoyed being able to start on either side. I really enjoyed the betwixt theme throughout the stories and thought they all worked well in the order they were in.

My favorite scene was in Mirror, Mirror when the grandmother and granddaughter rode up the steps together. It was such a cute detail that showed their bond and relationship. Overall this was a cute Halloween read and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for these authors future work.

A very cool assortment of short tales! Fans of Junji Ito won't be disappointed by this book, even though the stories are quite different from his in many ways. Reading it in ebook format was a bit confusing for a moment in the middle (you have to jump to the end and go backwards for the latter half, the stories by Japanese authors) but as soon as I sorted that out I was thrilled with the offerings.

Creepy compilations of various stories from different story tellers. My favorite is from Ryo Hanada and highly recommend the book.

Horror anthology series are always hit or miss for me and I think this one was almost a miss for me. I really enjoyed the first story but the other felt a bit lacking for me. (Also I though that Junji Ito did more than just the cover art for it but no :( only the cover).

In this anthology we have six short stories that depict all sorts of different kinds of horror. There are three stories from Japanese manga authors and three stories from US authors. You can really see a difference in the kinds of stories from the two different countries. I ended up liking stories from both places and the art styles were nice as well. Overall, if you are looking for a fun horror manga collection, then check this out!

Some of these stories were stronger than others, but I was expecting them to be more horrific then they were

As it approaches the season of all things horror, this collection of new horror manga from masters of the genre both established and upcoming is the perfect addition to any bookshelf not already weighed down beneath countless tomes of eldritch horror. A particular standout for me was Becky Cloonan's contribution. It bears repeating that she is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary horror, long may she continue.

Interesting collection, full of variety and surprises. Not every story worked for me, but it was a valuable experience in general. I'm interested in checking out more works from the featured authors.
