For the Summer
I listened to this novel as an audio book and it kept me company on my car journeys for the past two weeks.,
It follows the story of Will and Cat, who, though they come from different worlds, connect the summer they are 11 and 12 at the river resort Cat's family run.
There's a lot of 80s and 90s nostalgia through the book as the plot develops and so does Will and Cat's relationship. Many big issues are explored - coming of age, death, grief, adultery, and what family means to us.
I enjoyed the narrator's take on the story and the blasts from the past.

I adored the audiobook of ‘For the Summer’. The voice of Cat provided the right level of emotion and enthusiasm and from a British reader point of view, the American accent wasn’t annoying. The story is the perfect mix of coming of age tension and will they, won’t they moments. The River and Boardwalk setting, home to Cat and her family and summer holiday destination for Will and his family make for great adventures. The dilemmas faced by the characters felt well described and authentic. I’d definitely recommend.

There is everything a true romantic could want in this book: nostalgia, true friendship, realistic characters, many snappy comebacks, heartbreak, confusion -- all in addition to the true ramance. The story of Cat and Will covers almost two decades and Ms Harte shows how they all grow and change over the years as they become adults. Cat can be very frustrating at times, not sure of what she wants, not sure of what Will wants, worrying that she'd never fit into his world since she's been brought up in a marina -- and with lots of love -- and he's got money -- but not much love

. Thanks to NetGalley for the audiobook. The narrator was great, you could tell fairly easily which character was talking and you could move along with them. You won't be disappointed.

I appreciated being able to watch the characters grow up and I feel that it was done very well.

There were aspects of the book that frustrated me (as well-written conflict can do).

I appreciated the inner turmoil for the characters and feel happy with the ending. This book felt real. It wasn’t overly perfect or convenient. The relationships were complicated and the characters made dumb choices.


For those who care: the book wasn’t overtly seggsy, but there were definitely descriptive seggs scenes.

I loved this book - it was a perfect "summer love" book. Well written and easy to relate, I could imagine myself in this story and it took me back to my childhood.

First of all… the narrator was easy on the ears to listen to. The storyline got better and better with each summer.
It was pretty evident how it would end but getting there was a fun journey.
I would highly recommend this light and easy listening audiobook

The summer romance that keeps coming back. It’s so cute! I love how their relationship develops through the years, even when it gets rocky in parts. You can definitely see the love is there the whole time. I think we’ve all had that one summer love we keep wanting back and this is that story. Add in the fact that there are locals and seasonal people for this tourist town and it makes for a great story.

I have read this book when it first came out and then listened to it as audiobook more recently and I think I love it more on audio but I am limited to 5stars!
Reminiscent of Jenny Han’s The Summer I turned Pretty a tale of first love to be found on summer holiday that becomes true love but also about growing up and forging relationships that last. Understanding that transition from childhood into adulthood as a teenager and the angst that goes with it. Rightly so it is shallow to start and I think this reflects on the story being about a 12 year old, by the time the book is coming to and end both the story and the characters have matured. I raced through this story and found it sweetly romantic.

I loved this one so much!

Cat grew up at her dad's marina on the Colorado River. At eleven, she is used to people cycling in and out of her life. One summer she finds a boy crying on the swings. Will is there with his dad and stepmom. Cat and Will are fast friends, and at the end of the summer, she makes him promise to return. Will keeps his promise- returning to the marina each summer. As will and Cat grow up, their lives and therefore their relationship changes. Life, death, marriages, divorces- life happens. But at the end of the day, they are still the very best of friends.

While sad at times, and often frustrating, I loved Cat and Will's story. It was honest, realistic, and relatable. I'm very jealous- I'd have loved to find my person at the age of eleven! To have a bond like that with someone is special. And I very much enjoyed reading about their journey.

Melissa Connell narrates the audiobook. No complaints.

What can I say about this book other than wow! I didn't anticipated enjoying the story as much as I did, and the emotional rollercoaster was just enough to keep me coming back for more! One minute I was laughing and the next I was crying. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the story just waiting to see what would happen next. I found myself continually rooting for Cat and Will. I couldn't put it down and finished the entire story over a weekend. Definitely would recommend!

For the Summer has one of my favorite tropes- friends that meet only for the summer and how their relationships change throughout the years. As someone born in 1983, I especially loved the cultural references mentioned for each year.

I loved this book. I tend to enjoy books like this which are set over such a long period. I feel like you really get to know the characters and the relationships they develop are much more complex and interesting. I loved the characters in this book and thought it was brilliantly written

An interesting take on the ghost genre, a whodunnit with a significant reason for the spectre to hang around and put things rights in several areas of the physical earth before being able to live onto whatever next life exists.

Will the missions needed to complete the move work? Will these allow the ghost to rest? Will the correct solutions be found and enacted?

Lots of questions and the author and audiobook team work really well to deliver an entertaining and enjoyable production.

This is a nostalgic coming-of-age, friends-to-lovers romance that didn’t really feel like a romance. Thankfully, it wasn’t the gushy, kissy, I love you-can’t possibly live without touching you type of romance. I don’t like that fake stuff. Haha. This was a summer friendship that blossomed over 17 years. It was mostly comforting to feel it develop, with a few angsty moments.

I loved this slow burn romance. It was full of ups and downs and had my emotions all over the place.

For the Summer is the story of Cat and Will. Cat is a river girl. Will is a city boy. They meet when Will and his family go on vacation to the river. Over the next 15 years their relationship goes from friendship to more and back again. It's a Rollercoaster and I'm here for it.

I loved this story so much. Each chapter is a year and it's such a quick good read. I loved seeing Cat and Will grow up and who they became as adults. If you want a slow burn romance, this is it.

This was a pleasant surprise, I loved all the 90 nostalgia. The characters were very well rounded and the plot was constantly moving forward.

I liked the format of tracking Will and Cat’s summer relationship through the 80s and 90s. The writing was a bit stilted when they were children but did flow better as they developed to adults. Unfortunately, the narration didn’t really help the story.

I loved the well developed characters and storyline in this book, it kept me intrigued and wanting to find out what happened to Cat and Will. I have always lived on the East Coast, so it was interesting to hear about summers on the river in a landscape I am unfamiliar with, but could easily visualize. The intro of pop culture at the beginning of each year/chapter was awesome for this kid from the 80’s and 90’s. Great read!

Cat and Will meet as preteens while he is vacationing in Arizona at her dad’s marina. For the Summer follows the duo through the 80s and 90s, but only during the summer season. Cat and Will have a unique bond, but is it strong enough to stand the test of time?

This was such a great listen! At first I thought the format was a little odd, but it turned out to be amazing. Each chapter is a different summer in the lives of Cat and Will. This is a cute romance with a happy ending. It was an easy and interesting listen told with dual POV.
