This is a short collection of true crime stories. Some you will have heard before some will be brand new to you. This kept me turning the pages whilst also feeling terrified about the real horrors that lurk outside.

This book was ok, short chapters but told the stories well, I guess I am more a fan of true British crime and not necessarily those from around the world.

Thanks for the advance copy.

Great book to dip in and out of if you wanted to. I found the stories interesting.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

As a hardcore true crime fan who listens to a lot of true crime podcasts, I had heard of most of these cases. Many have been covered on one of my favourite true crime podcasts, Morbid.

I still enjoyed the read, however, but as the podcasts went into much more detail, I felt this was more of an overview of each case. It was well written, an easy and pretty quick read, and those less involved with true crime books and podcasts already, will like it.

I enjoyed reading about the couple of cases I hadn't come across before and felt the author picked some different cases that were certainly more strange and bizarre than most you see covered in true crime books. I was clearly just slightly too true crime hardcore for this one!

A decent selection of true crime mysteries and creepier case files, written in a very accessible, light and possibly almost insalubrious manner. I liked the spread of cases – here we cover Germany, Japan, Nigeria and the US, many decades over the last century and a half, cold cases as well as ones where every intimate detail is waiting in a Nutflux slush pile, and so on. There are nasty break-ins, expensive smear campaigns by post, poltergeist-ish activity and more. The short chapters are done in friendly style, certainly more than readable, and while not slathering on the grand guignol or the spooky still allow for some frissons of something or other to cross from the page to the reader. For all the tendency to be a touch tabloidish and disrespectful (a common frailty of this genre, I guess) it felt to be the book one would expect from the title and cover, and gets four stars.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC on this fun little number. I have rounded 2.5 stars up to 3.

This book contains lots of little short descriptions of crimes from the past. Some of the stories are quite well-known while others are more obscure. The book was interesting and quick to read. Am I going to remember it forever? No. Will I reference some of the cases in the forensic science class I teach? Perhaps.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.

20 different true crime stories all in one book, it’s all I could ask for 😂.

Some of the stories I had already heard but most of them I hadn’t. Some of the stories ventured more into the spiritual world which was fine but I felt it didn’t fit with the rest of the stories.

I found this book super interesting to read! I loved that each case had its each section so I could read about each case and that there was a range of cases too including ones I hadn’t heard about before.

Informative and short true crime stories. I found them really interesting but there certainly a few running themes where there was paranormal activities etc.

I do enjoy books like this but this type of book has been done many times before. This book allows small snippets of what crimes have happened and sometimes why. I enjoyed it because it got right the point and gave the information I wanted, but then if I want more I would need to do further reading. Most of the crimes in this book I had not heard of before, so it made an interesting read for me.

I find True Crime very intriguing so I was looking forward to reading cases that I hadn't heard of before.

As the title suggests, this was a fascinating read about some strange crimes. Murders from all around the world. The book was well written and easy to read. Each code was described in detail and outlined how the case progressed. Each chapter was a different case and so is an easy book to dip in and out of- the perfect bathroom book! I did wish there were photos of the crimimals- I found myself googling but some of the cases were from the 1800s so photos wouldn't have been possible for each case.

This is a book full of short eay to read stories that really failed to meet my expectations. Some could be called bizarre but not many of them. I do appreciate that Jack Rosewood had obviously done a lot of research but I am afraid to say althought his was an interesting book it did not match the title.

As a writer of True Crime myself (Bloody Yorkshire series) I understand the work that goes into the research for this book. It was an enjoyable read, well-written.

4 stars

This book contains 20 unique true crime cases, which are written to be very concise, accessible, and readable; making each story easy to consume while sticking to facts, which all seemed fairly well researched.

I think this book would possibly be more suitable for those with a more passing interest in true crime rather than those who (like me) listen to a lot of podcasts and watch a lot of documentaries. If you are more of a true crime fan there is a good chance that you are already aware of the cases in this book. However, that does not mean that it hindered my enjoyment, more that those who have not previously heard of the cases will get more value from the weird and bizarre nature of them.

The book makes some commentary on why people are so fascinated and interested in true crime, which is something I wish was explored more rather than mentioned in passing; I would definitely have enjoyed reading a deeper dive into this and think the book would have benefitted from it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The title of the book promises a lot, as does the introduction, which asserts that true crime fans need something that goes beyond "the run-of-the-mill murders everyone has heard of" - then immediately opens with a story about a cannibal killing that by this point must be pretty well known. (I've certainly read about it myself in more than one book, as well as simply hearing about it on television news too.)

The book doesn't quite deliver what it promises, but it's a quick read that documents a number of weird crimes, some of them historical, some of them more modern. It felt quite anecdotal rather than being backed up by any evidence or real sources, and the writing at times was a bit clumsy and in need of a bit more editing.

This was so interesting, some of the stories I’d heard before but as they were short outlines of each story I didn’t get bored, this also made it flow really well and was easy to follow to without loads of unnecessary details. I was intrigued by a few of the stories so I looked up podcasts on them after.
Overall a good and easy way to get into true crime reading.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.

A collection of 20 strange but true crimes ranging from the late 1800s to the modern day. Some of them were downright bizarre whilst others were grisly to say the least. The chapters are short & to the point, detailed without being ghoulish. At the end, the author muses as to why true crime is such a popular genre & argues that it is a way for us to safely confront our fears of death which does makes sense. Overall it was an interesting read even if it did leave me feeling a little unsettled. 3.5 stars (rounded up)

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Little, Brown Book Group UK/Sphere, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
