The cuteness is just abundant in this book. It kept my 8 year old daughter and her friends busy for hours! I’m a big fan of anything that can help nurture creativity and this book is cream of the crop in that regard.

Thank you Netgalley for the eARC! I love kawaii books and I love doodling, so I was excited to learn more from this book. There were some helpful tips in the beginning, like how to make drawings unique to your personal art style, but after that it was a step-by-step guide on how to draw specific images drawn by the author. I'm not a huge fan of those types of learning-to-draw books because then I just want to recreate the exact image in the example. I still think some people would find this book helpful though, so I would still recommend it.

I'm addicted. I've now read so many How to Draw Kawaii Stuff books and all I want to do is draw little kawaii items all over everything I touch while holding a pen. Including professional paperwork. I'm not ashamed. Everyone needs some kawaii cuteness in their life. Go, get this book and introduce some cute happiness into your world.

Another good book to add to the many instructional books on kawaii drawing. This one is better suited for more experienced artists.

Kawaii Drawing is an adorable tutorial and drawing guide for a huge number of cute line drawn subjects by Becky Castañeda. Released 24th Oct 2023 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 112 pages and is available in paperback format.

It's a truly accessible and beginner friendly guide and readers of all ages will be able to draw cute doodles and small drawings pretty easily. The author introduces the kawaii (cute) style clearly and understandably along with a short tutorial on tools and materials choices.

The tutorials themselves are arranged in chapters and include both character drawings (bunny, cute cat, kitty, mermaid, etc) as well as objects (trees, flowers, sushi, cakes, and more). Each short tutorial includes step-by-step drawing instructions with accompanying explanatory text. They really are cute and easy to understand.

This would make a great selection for public or school library acquisition, home use, as well as for child-minders, babysitters, or anyone who would like to improve their drawing ability with the youngsters in their lives. Doodling is a fun hobby and this book will get readers drawing quickly and easily.

Four and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I found the guidance and steps easy to follow. It made someone like me who is years out of practice of drawing look like I knew what I was doing! Fun and relaxing. Will definitely recommend to budding artists or for someone looking for a new creative outlet or relaxing hobby.

Super cute but best for intermediate level artists. Drawings are very specific rather than generic so you can make your own.

This was fun and full of “Kawaii” illustrations to try out! I’m not a good artist, but I still had fun trying these out.

So cute! I already try to do some of the drawings and although I'm not good at all, I really enjoyed the process. I will keep practicing to be better. I actually feel like I learn something. Please, keep creating books like this one.

Interested in drawing cute things?
Freelance illustrator Becky Castaneda presents her book "Kawaii Drawing. Learn to draw more than 100 super cute things", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster. The book starts with the chapters "Welcome", "Materials", and "The Fundamentals of Cuteness" and then presents sixteen designs (e.g., Kitty Girl, Party Bear, Cute Cakes, ...). In the chapter about materials Castaneda presents her favorite drawing items (mechanical colored pencils, fine liners, and alcohol markers) but she gives also an introduction to digital drawing and painting. In the chapter "The fundamentals of Cuteness" she talks about the origins of Kawaii. It "is a Japanese word that’s usually used as an adjective, and it means something like “sweet,” in the sense of “cute.”, but underlines that "... kawaii is much more than just a word. The term also incorporates a whole cultural trend of cuteness which started in Japan in the 1960s and slowly took over the world in the ’80s and ’90s as it gained popularity and became a part of global pop culture" (p.17).
I found the sub-title irritating since it talks about more than 100 super cute things, but in reality there are only sixteen step-by-step drawings. The only explanation can be that every step was counted as a drawing. I recommend the book to readers who plan to use colored pencils (mechanical or normal), fine liners, and alcohol markers for their drawings, but even those readers who use different materials (e.g., water colors, ...) can glean new ideas.
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
