This is a good guide for UK gardeners. Each shrub has a large detailed color illustration, at least one large color photo, and information about its UK growing zone, needs, habitat, etc. There is also all kinds of information about planting, pests, seasonal chores, troubleshooting and detailed projects to use your shrubs like how to make a lavender pillow, elderflower cordial or herbal soap.

I really appreciated the pest section, where it was refreshing to read recommendations for manual control of pests rather than pesticides that will kill birds and beneficial insects (reminder too that birds rely on caterpillars for food sources and having a bird friendly yard will bring them to cheerfully take care of your caterpillars and other insects for you).

Most of the shrubs are a little too tender for my Minnesota garden but it was a good read.

The only things I’d add are to say which ones are toxic to people, pets, or livestock, and to mention when shrubs have edible or medicinal parts for people besides just when birds love them. Altogether though, it’s a thorough, helpful guide.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.

A useful book for someone fairly new to gardening. It includes a good selection of shrubs some well known, some more unusual. Careful instructions are given on how to recognise the plant and to grow it. The main picture of the shrub is actually an illustration, the second picture is a photograph. I would have liked to have see much larger photos as it is not easy to identify from the illustrations.

Incredibly helpful title! I am learning more and more about shrubs and how to incorporate them into my own landscape. This has been an invaluable resource for me. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about shrubs in general (the science, and the care of) and then using it has a fundamental basis before looking for natives in your country.
