A mix of time constraints and lack of appeal made me stop this early. Our heroine sees a murderous something happen, that is bound to get her involved in something else, but before that something can hope to happen we have to have stereotypically bickering siblings, and then even more delay – if I wanted betrothals over the ballroom floor I'd pick up Jane Austen, or someone. Things are promised – especially by a bloke saying there are no dragons any longer, so I'll be the Lord of them, or whatever – but this felt like it was going to be a touch too laborious for both my circumstances and tastes.

This is the story of Milla, a servant girl on the island of Arcosi, where Dragons and their Riders once roamed the skies. Nowadays, those old stories are considered the stuff of legends, and like everyone else, Milla thinks of them in much the same way.

Until she witnesses the murder of a man who is carrying some Dragon eggs preparing to hatch. After the man is killed, Milla retrieves the parcel he has hidden, only to discover the last four precious eggs.

When the ruler of the island, Duke Olvar, gives Milla and her friends the responsibility for taking care of the eggs, she is introduced to a different world - one of adventure and magic, and a growing sense of suspicion regarding her ruler's motives. After she and her friends bond with the Dragons, Milla finds she must make some difficult choices...

This is an action filled story that addresses themes of racism, migration, found family, conservation and heroism. The plot revolves around Milla, who is supported by an interesting and diverse set of characters. The book is an easy read and young readers will find plenty to enjoy. It gets 3.5 stars.

This was first published several years ago, but is being re-issued ahead of the final part of the trilogy. The heroine, Milla has to put up with so many trial and tribulations s she tries to save the last four dragon eggs from being destroyed. This series is all about the struggle between good and evil and how we can all do our part in saving those in danger of extinction. I can't wait for the final part of the series.

Game of Thrones meets Lord of the Rings in this beautifully written tale of Milla's quest to reunite her island and discover her hidden past.

Dragon's Daughter follows the story of Milla, a servant girl living on the island of Arcosi, where dragons used to roam freely in the skies and are now extinct and the stuff of folklore and history books. That is until Milla witnesses the murder of a man carrying four dragon eggs waiting to hatch. Milla is drawn to the eggs and guards them then, when they fall into the hands of Duke Olvar, she and three friends bond with and raise the dragons to his orders.

Milla begins to suspect that the Duke isn't acting in the interest of her beloved homeland and the story follows her adventure as she defies his orders and puts her life on the line to save her dragon, her friends, her home and herself.

We really enjoyed this story, which isn't short but kept us engaged and entertained throughout.

If dragons were real, we would love one to imprint on and live with us. We are pretty certain that it would make life exciting and we would never have to worry about how to light the fire!

A great start to what will be an epic series of books, extremely detailed and exciting. We read this book with children age 10+ as it contains battle scenes and murder.

Thank you to Net Galley and UClan Publishing for sending us this eBook for review. All opinions are our own.

This book went down very well with all of the children and I did enjoy it myself too. A heartwarming story of friendship and finding family. A great read especially at this time of year.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for an ARC of Dragon Daughter by Liz Flanagan!

This was beautifully written and appropriate for a middle grade fantasy audience. The themes of friendship, lost and forgotten family, racism, migration, arranged marriage and political oppression were woven in really well and held a strong message throughout.

The story begins with Milla, a servant girl who looks after a family on the island of Arcosi. After witnessing a murder of a man unknown to her who’s left a parcel concealed in the bushes he was murdered nearby; curiosity gets the better of Milla to find out what is in the parcel. This leads Milla down a path of adventure, friendship and love with an overarching theme of lost and forgotten family, racism, migration, and political oppression.

The world building was written well and I enjoyed the bringing together of real world and fantasy concept, I truly felt as if I were experiencing the characters emotions with them. The cast of characters were great and really easy to connect to, I loved their dynamic!

I was expecting more from the book, so it’s a biiiittt disappointing. But maybe it’ll be a fun read for children ages 6-8. It’s a fast read, but it’s just didnn’t meet my expectation.

Dragon Daughter by Liz Flanagan Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dragon Daughter by Liz Flanagan was an excellent 4 star read! Perfectly written and appropriate for a middle grade fantasy audience. It covers topics such as friendship, lost and forgotten family, racism, migration, arranged marriage and political oppression.

This leads Milla down a path of adventure, friendship and love with an overarching theme of lost and forgotten family, racism, migration, and political oppression. Oh! And did I mention there’s dragons too!

Even in my 30’s, I really enjoyed this story. I admired the rich world building and the way in witch Liz Flanagan brings real world topics into this book in a completely age appropriate way, grabbing the reader in with the emotions the characters experience. The characters were great and really easy to connect to. My favourite characters were Milla and Tarya, both strong willed and confident in their manner.

Published on the 2nd November 2023 this is an ideal Christmas gift for the young fantasy reader!

Thank you @netgalley and @uclan_publishing for this free arc, in exchange for an honest review.
