The Other Tenant had an interesting setup - "property guardians" who live in and look after unoccupied buildings for a very low rent, often pending redevelopment. In this instance, an old school in North London - but when Marlow accepts the assignment, she hasn't realised it's her old school, and for various reasons it's not a place she wants to revisit.
There's a motley group of tenants already living there... and there's also someone watching from outside...
And what really happened to the tenant Marlow is replacing?
As I said, I did like the setup and the atmosphere of the school, but I got a little lost at times with everything that was happening - the missing girl, the hidden observer, all the different characters who live in the school, the mysterious goings-on therein, the tragedy that occurred in the past ... there was a lot, maybe too much, happening. I did struggle to keep my attention engaged as the story went on and wasn't sure how much some components of the plot really added.
An OK read but not one I will revisit or which will stick in my mind for long, I suspect.
Didn’t enjoy this one, too many names, obvious where it was going, it bored me.
Thank you Storm Publishing and Lesley Kara for an advanced copy.
I've been reading Lesley Kara's books ever since her debut and always look forwards to a new one.
Main character Marlow is a live-in property guardian, her next residence is place she never thought she'd revisit - her own school which is due to be converted into luxury apartments.
Marlow quickly is suspicious about the hasty departure of a previous tenant and is compelled to try and investigate.
I liked the original setup, I liked the atmosphere of the draughty old school. I found the plot too indirect and rather strung out and I'm sorry to say My interest was drifting towards the end.
While there were aspects I really like it's not an easy book to recommend.

A fun read.
Marlow has always lived in unusual places. But when she accepts a position as a live-in property guardian, she finds herself moving somewhere she swore she’d never return to. Right from the start, she knows it’s a terrible mistake. The elegant Victorian school is due to be turned into luxury apartments, but its eerie, empty corridors are full of Marlow’s worst memories. And now something sinister is happening on the site. One of the other tenants has disappeared without warning, and Marlow suspects that the nine other guardians know far more than they’re letting on. She’s determined to find out what happened to the missing woman – but which of these strangers can she trust? And can she uncover the truth before her own past catches up with her?
It ended a bit abruptly for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK , Transworld Publishers , Bantam for giving me an advance copy.
I didn't really get in to this book and the story just seemed a bit far fetched for me. It seemed to lack depth in some way. I persevered but nearly gave up.
I have loved previous books by this author and was very excited to read this, however I didn’t enjoy it at all. The story was ridiculously unbelievable and the characters lacked depth. It wasn’t for me.
I love any book by Lesley Kara and this one is no different, it kept me gripped and immersed until the very end.
Once again Lesley Kara has written another gripping thriller which had me up late into the night reading just couldn’t put it down. This was a dark twisty read. It was a slow burner thriller but once it got going WOW it was a rollercoaster of a read.
Marlow is a property guardian who is used to living in strange places. She accepts a place in a new building, one that has dark connections in her past and finds out that another tenant, Hayley, has gone missing some strange thinks start to happen. Will Marlow secrets be safe or has she been brought back for them all to come out.
Highly recommended this was a fantastic gripping book. Thanks to netgallery and the publisher for my advanced copy.
Dark and twisty, such a slow burner but good!! A real roller coaster of a ride that grabs you from the first chapter. I loved it.
This is a chilling slow burn thriller set in a former private school which is now the temporary residence of a group of property guardians including newcomer Marlow who has serious misgivings about moving in here given that she went to school here herself and has many bad and complex memories associated with it. The plot itself is simple but well thought out and each character has enough quirks to make you wonder just what’s their story and whats behind the strange occurrences at the school and what happened to the tenant that Marlow replaced after they left suddenly. This wasn’t a total page turner for me but it was still a very enjoyable read with a good creepiness to it with the location and the additional sections with the former pupil who was obsessed with Marlow added to the intrigue.
This was the perfect amount of dark and twisty! It's not the most realistic storyline but it's a work of fiction so it doesn't have to be. It is however very entertaining! The guardian spin made the whole story so original and was a really nice touch to whst could have been a bit of a samey plot line to plenty others but I was really fascinated by that idea. The characters are also well written with an engaging writing style that kept me hooked and had my flying through to the end
I’ve read all of Lesley Kara’s other books, but this is probably the best one I’ve read,
It’s a dark and mysterious thriller that brings lots of twists.
I really enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend.
Marlow is a property guardian who is used to living in strange places. She accepts a place in a new building, one that has dark connections in her past and finds out that another tenant, Hayley, has gone missing. Soon she becomes
obsessed finding out what happened. What secrets will come to light?
I enjoyed Lesley Kara’s debut novel, The Rumour and have read all her books since then. The Other Tenant is up there with one of my favourites. I found the writing style engaging and the use of the property guardian added an interesting, unique spin on an overused storyline. There are quite a few characters to get your head around but they are well written and have their own personalities. I enjoyed the chapters told in alternate voices and although the pacing dipped in a few places, it quickly picked up again. I enjoyed trying to work out the puzzles and there are a few twists and turns thrown in, some that I did not guess!
I wasn’t as keen on the conclusion and felt it was slightly underwhelming after all the build up but there were some tense final scenes which held me in suspense and made me want to carry on reading. I would also have liked to have seen more conclusions to some of the sub plots as they seem to not be fully resolved and left quite open. Overall, this was a good, entertaining thriller and I look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this copy in return for an honest review.
A twisty mystery which had some good creepy moments and i also did not get the correct villain.
I have loved all of Lesley Kara's previous books but i found this a little far fetched and i have to say not one of this author's best. An ok read sadly. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Book was ok. I feel like it’s an overdone plot. Marlow ends up living at her old school which has been secrets from her past. Weird things happen. Someone ends dead although they try to keep it hidden by “being in touch with her family.” Then it comes to light that Marlow really is guilty of things in the past.
