"To my little star. Follow the path of Anubis. I know you can do it."

All the Devils is a fine work of dark academia and it has held me gripped for the past couple of days. It is certainly one of the best Arcs I have read this year and I am grateful to Penguin Random House for sending it to me. It is a dark, atmospheric tale of ancient gods, monsters, magic and the fine line between life and death.

The story begins when Andromeda is mourning the death of her sister Violet, yet a chance discovery makes her wonder if Violet is really dead after all, or if the body is fake. She decides to enrol at her sister's old school, Ravenswood, in order to solve the mystery of what exactly happened there and why her sister suddenly disappeared then turned up dead.

This is a book that is rooted in mythology and Egyptology. Andy must learn to read old symbols and hieroglyphic messages, as well as unravel a series of clues and signs left behind by her sister. The result is a novel that descends deeper and deeper into darkness, with plenty of action to keep you turning the pages.

Although it is set in an elite school, much of the story takes place in the shadowy Underworld, as Andy seeks out the gods and ghouls who can help her to discover if her sister is dead or alive. There is a touch of romance included and a very satisfying dénouement which is full of adventure, strange twists and dark thrills.

Its a difficult book to review without giving away any spoilers, but if you enjoy reading stories based on ancient mythology then you will probably like this one. It doesn't stick to one single pantheon of gods, but mixes together all the deities connected with the Underworld, so you have Anubis and Hecate in the same story. This can be a little jarring to those of us who are familiar with the different pantheons, but it doesn't spoil the storyline and it all makes sense in the end. This novel ends in such as way that it sets up the premise for a sequel too, so it certainly looks like there is more to come.

Although I read this novel back in the spring, I wasn't allowed to share it until closer to its release date. All the Devils is the perfect read for foggy autumn days, so grab a cup of cocoa and snuggle under a blanket as you descend into the Underworld with Andromeda and her gods and monsters.

Happy Reading!

If you're after a dark academia book with hints of murder mystery, magic, and mythology, All the Devils is the book for you.

We follow Andromeda (Andy) who, having recently attended her older sister's funeral, has discovered that the body is a fake - her sister's whereabouts and wellbeing are unknown. Suspecting that her sister's haunting, gothic boarding school has something to do with it, Andy enrols to search for answers. She is joined by Jae, a first year student, who is also searching for his own answers,

The premise for the book is incredibly interesting and as the reader, you get rushed straight into the action. The pace is quick, and at times hard to keep up with. What stuck out for me was the characters - they fell a bit flat for me. Our main character is unlikeable which isn't a bad thing, however she forms instant connections and favourable impressions with the students she meets which just seems unbelievable given her behaviour.

An enjoyable spin on the dark academia archetypes, All the Devils is a ghoulish romntasy where a beleaguered girl must venture into the Underworld, save her sister from the dead, and if she has time, fall in love with a god of the dead. A little cliche perhaps, but generally a fun and well-written time.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, for allowing me to read the ARC for this book!

This book definitely fits into the 'Dark Academia' genre, with a mix of fantasy and a touch of horror, the blend was executed very well. The mix of mythology was interesting too, and I found the book to be quite enjoyable. It was well written, and I would recommend to those who are a fan of dark academia.

I found the plot enjoyable, however there were parts that felt a bit dull or slow, and it initially took me a while to get into it. However I would still say it is definitively worth giving this book a read if yoh are usually a fan of the genres as it really picks up further into it.

The premise and blurb of this book is highly intriguing, however the story fell flat. The main character was not likeable and rather childish. I was unable to create deep connections with the characters. The story is extremely fast-paced and doesn’t give you enough time to breathe and enjoy the characters as it jumps from one scene to another. Main and side characters needed more depth.

I did really enjoy the romantic side plot of the story. It was beautiful and very slow-burn.

The ending of the book alluded to another part, which might give us more insight into the worlds and characters.

All The Devils - Catelyn Wilson

I didn't read too much about this book before going in and I'm glad I didn't, the plot had a good combination of a steady pace and provoked enough Intrigue from the beginning to keep me interested. We get enough introduction and background on the characters to know how they work into the story whilst keeping an element of mystery to their full involment and role in the society. The author does a very good job of giving plenty of lore about The Underworld, the beings that inhabit it and the connection with the mortal world without feeling like an information dump of world building.

Some might have an issue with how the author describes the world throughout calling it an excessive use but I loved how she managed to perfectly paint an image of the world and characters in an effortless way that kept the images rolling consistently in my brain without taking my attention away from the plot or lore.

If I had any criticisms then I would say that the characters I feel like I know the least about are the main ones Violet and Andy, I wanted to know more about Andy herself not just as a sister to Violet. Andy also was a descendant of Hecate but her having powers felt brushed over and even Violets didn't feel fully explored though the ending does give an indication to abook two that could solve this issue.

I read this in two days and got this courtesy of Netgalley, I would recommend for anyone who is into ancient god's, magic and mystery.

definitely recommend this book to Ninth House fans and lovers of dark academia and fantasy. (At times I did feel they were suuuuuper similar but also different)the end of chapter 1 well and truly had me hooked, but I will admit my attention and interest seemed to waver by the mid point. I found some phrases perhaps overly used, for example stating one’s name and its various iterations across mythology like anubis, hermes etc, (like okay i get it) also, violets personal situation with her health was kind of lost on me - until it came up again at the end, but this could simply be down to how I felt I was dragged through the middle. I will say, I really enjoyed how this ended open for the next book and despite my points raised, I do think I will be picking up the next one just to see how things pan out as the series continues.

My very first ARC and it did NOT disappoint!

What drew me to this book…
“Dark academia meets horror in this YA fantasy series. Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House and Netflix’s Wednesday.”

About the book (no spoilers)…
Andy Emmerson is mourning the death of her sister, when she finds out she isn’t really dead. She travels to hell and back (quite literally) in order to save her. She joins her sisters school which isn’t quite what it seems. She meets the mysterious Jae who wants to help her on her quest, but he has secrets of his own. Andy has to battle demons, Gods, fellow students, teachers, parents, and even her own sister.

My thoughts…
I honestly loved this book from start to finish. It had absolutely everything I could want from my first ever YA dark academia book. Suspense, heartbreak, romance, magic, sisterhood, friendship, loyalty, and betrayal. The style of writing was perfect, the twists and turns were excellent. The ending was a cliff hanger I wasn’t expecting but thoroughly enjoyed. I cannot WAIT for the next book!

It is the perfect autumn read, which makes perfect sense why the release date for this book is September.

I honestly cannot recommend this book enough. It was the perfect book to introduce me to dark academia. It was an exciting and fun read & I think everyone should add it to their TBR

All the Devils follows Andy Emmerson who is mourning the sudden death of her sister, Violet. But on the day of the funeral, Andy realises that the body doesn't belong to her sister and suspects she's still alive and that her sister's elite boarding school is covering up the truth. Andy attends Ravenwood Academy to get answers and follow Violet's clues that introduce her to secret societies, monsters and magic. Andy is assisted by the mysterious Jae Han.

I was really intrigued by the blurb, and I did find the plot itself interesting. The book didn't waste any time getting stuck into the plot, and things happened very quickly in the story.

I think my main problem wasn't with the plot or the world, but with the characters. I didn't find Andy very likeable and she rushed around blindly, literally not knowing where she was going or what she was going to do. She didn't listen to any advice or share any information, while at the same time telling people that she couldn't trust them until they shared information with her. I just found all of this behaviour too immature, even for the age of the character. I think there was an opportunity missed with some of the side characters too, particularly Violet's friends. They were all quite one-note, and antagonistic to Andy from the very start. There was probably a missed opportunity there for at least one of the friends to actually be nice to Andy and almost convince her that it's all in her head, only to be caught out later on when Andy started to spiral. I don't know, I just wanted a bit more out of the characters and for them to be more than they appeared initially.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from NetGalley, but this is my voluntary and honest review.

3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of All The Devils!

This book has such a cool concept! I really like the mixture of mythology and magic, alongside the dark academia setting. I think the Underworld setting was well-written, and an interesting take on the underworld as a place (I feel like I've read a few books recently with visits to the underworld!). The mixture of different mythologies is great in this!

I do feel there are a few things missing from the book though. It's being advertised as a dark academia but I found the academia aspect a bit lacking; there was only one lesson scene I think, and not much of the story takes place at the school. Also, I didn't find the main character very likeable, I struggled with the book being from her POV as she seemed a bit one-dimensional/lacking in personality somewhat.

Overall a fun and quick read! It's set up for a sequel but not sure I will come back to read it.

I was super excited to read this by the premise and it didn’t disappoint. I’m a huge fan of books containing gothic, horror, and dark academia elements and this was the perfect blend of them all. The author crafted an eerie atmosphere and the writing was stunning. Overall, I loved this, and I’m looking toward to reading more by the author in the future

Okay, wow, this book gripped me from the first sentence and I was hooked all the way along! If you like:

Dark Academia
Ninth House
Wednesday
With a side of Belladonna

Then you'll probably love this too!

The author did a fantastic job at delivering well-rounded characters with flaws and struggles of their own. I loved Andy/Andromeda (adored the name) and her quest to prove that her sister isn't dead and how she gets wrapped up in secret societies within the dark, foreboding Ravenswood Academy - an elite school for society's most wealthy. The imagery was amazing and I felt like I was right there along beside Andy witnessing all the horrors that dealing with Occult had to offer.

I especially enjoyed Jae's character and how well the author did at hiding his true identity - you know it's a good book when you are second guessing all your theories right up until the plot twists!

For me I think I would've wanted a little bit more detail about the reasons why the secret society were intent on their actions, just saying they were promised greatness fell a little short for me when these students have more money than they know what's good for them. Additionally, the first half took a while to get going but by about the 60% mark I sped through and couldn't get enough.

I enjoyed how it didn't have a 'happily ever after' ending and it leaves the door open for future books, I'm especially excited to continue reading about Andy and Jae's relationship and how they deal with the 'distance' (hence why this gave me Belladonna vibes, iykyk)!

All in all, it was a really great delve in YA Dark Academia and I loved it.

4-4.5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin, Steve Jones and Catelyn Wilson for this ARC!

The description of All The Devils as a ‘dark academia meets horror in this YA fantasy series’, immediately drew me in and I was not at all disappointed.
This book lived up to its description from the very first page. I am always looking for a dark-academia book and this had the perfect blend of the occult, mystery, magic, and elite, private-school rivalry!
I found myself reading it quite fast as the story itself is fast-paced. There wasn’t a moment that felt as though it lingered or prompted any sense of boredom. While the reader is given A LOT of information at the beginning and it can feel overwhelming, I believe it works well to show how overwhelming it feels for the protagonist too! She runs into an environment that she is uncomfortable in while trying to decipher information and clues that often feel impossible, all so she can find out what happened to her sister.

I really, really enjoyed this! Thank you to NetGalley / Penguin & the author for allowing me to read this special ARC!

This book is really fast paced at the beginning and straight from the get go we’re plunged into drama.

I loved the vibes of this book. It has everything I look for in terms of dark academia and magic.

I think this book is especially good for those who enjoyed Atlas Six or Ninth House. It reminds me a lot of what the river knows too.

Only issue I found was the last 1/3 going between very fast paces and slower

Excited to see what the author brings out next!

Thank you Netgalley and Steve Jones for the ARC!

There I was, scrolling through the lists of books, the description of All the Devils is what grabbed my attention. Dark Academia. Gods and Goddesses. Ancient Egyptian Deities. Yep. I would like to read this. 😊

The book is mainly about a girl who refuses to accept that her sister is dead and embarks upon a journey not only to find and rescue her sister but also one of self-discovery.  Literally.
She attends a prestigious school and encounters challenges, magic, the occult;  danger and an attraction to someone who isn't all he seems.

I must admit, I wasn't sure at first as I found the writing early on in the book lacked oomph, but the storyline did lure me in, and I found myself  focussed and wanting to read more.

The book has:

Demons
Deities
The Underworld
Guardians of the Dead
Monsters
Magic
The Occult

I am looking forward to the second book in this duology, mainly because I want to know what happens with Andy and Jae!

It's Dark Academia, Secret Societies, and a bit of magic/mythology all rolled up into one.

I'll be honest, this book is incredibly fast paced. And by fast paced I mean we get dropped right into the middle of the action right from the first chapter. I was initially drawn to this book as it seemed like a really unique spin on dark magic and dark academia, both genres I'm quote fond of.

The author did a phenomenal job at world building. This was honestly my favorite part of the book. Above all else you could really feel like you were part of the book. The way the author described the sensory feelings of the settings you could get a full image of what exactly was happening in the book. From the descriptions of the woods surrounding the school, to the icy waters of the cove, and the eery dread of the underworld you really felt engrossed in the world.

I think the author did a fantastic job of creating complex characters with individual motives even if they were trying to reach the same end goal. For example, with Jae's character you could tell he was haunted by his past, but the author did an amazing job at hiding his real identity until the very end. Or Violet's character who, for most of the book we see her soley from her sister's perspective, but then we meet her and realize how tortured she's been for months grappling with the weight of her illness and resisting (or not resisiting) the temptations of ultimate power.

For me, where this book lost me was in the pacing and in the worldbuilding (which is something I did compliment earlier in my review). The first 2/3 of the book was both fast and slow at the same time. We really jumped right in with Andy investigating what happened with her sister, finding out about this secret society and all of this magic, and trying to understand all of the rules at the same time. There were many moments where I simply felt overwhelmed. There was so much informtion and revelations being thrown at me that I didn't have time to really digest any of them.

However, the last third of the book really redeemed itself for me. There were several plot twists that I was genuinely surprised by. I think the author did a great job of giving us just enough information to make us believe one thing or think a certain way about a character and then completely shift it. The twists and turns of the ending scenes left a satifying conclusion to the story while still allowing the readers to want for more.

All in all I genuinely enjoyed this book. I'm very grateful to NetGalley and Catelyn Wilson for the ARC.

Mention dark academia and you have me hooked. This YA has it all - secret societies, mystery, magic, demons and much more. It's fast pace with beautiful and in-depth world building that gets you hooked from the start. It's eerie, mysterious with an undertone of threat and intrigue and boy did I love it.

Wow, wow, wowwwww!!! I did not expect how this book was going to play out, I couldn’t put the book down.

Andromeda - Andy - knows there is something suspicious about the death of her sister, Andy knows that the body she saw in the casket is in fact not her sister and Violet is still alive and out there, somewhere… and she won’t stop until she uncovers the truth.

Andy soon arrives at same elite school that Violent went to, not long after she arrives at Ravenswood she wakes up to moths (No thanks!) in her bed and even being chased in the woods however none of this deters her from finding out what had happened to Violet, Andy soon discovers that her sister and her sisters friends was part of a secret society and its all unravelling…

Andy is quite literally thrown into a world full of mystery and secrets, demons and deaths being faked, societies, travelling to another realm and a dash of romance.

I loved Andy’s character development, and seeing her stepping out of her sister’s shadow, the nickname her sister gave her is for sure fitting.

Violet was not how I was expecting her to be and I was a little disappointed but it is understandable why she went down the path she went down.

I found Jae’s storyline was intriguing, I loved the mysteriousness about him and why does he know so much? I loved uncovering his storyline and finding out more about him, I think that was the most interesting for me.

I loved the world building and Catelyn is an excellent writer and has certainty done her research for this story, I wasn’t actually expecting to enjoy this as much as I did.

All the Devils, could be a standalone and left to the reader to decide what happens next but I’m hoping ( praying ) there is a sequel with how the book ended! would love to see more between Andy and Jae.

✨ NetGalley ARC Review ✨
Release Date : 19th September 2024

If Ninth House and Kingdom of the Wicked were to have a baby you would probably get this book.

This is YA Dark Academia/Fantasy.
We follow Andy mourning the sudden death of her sister, but on the day of her funeral Andy discovers that the person casket is not her sister. Violet is alive.

Convinced her sisters boarding school is covering up the truth, Andy enrols at Ravenswood Academy to uncover what really happened and find violet.

I love the premise the dark academia, secret society, magic and demonic elements had me hooked from the get go. And the story being told was a good one filled with mystery. Overall I had fun and was never bored.

However for me this fell a little flat in ways. Firstly I don't feel like we ever really explored the settings much. It was Dark Academia but I would of liked more atmosphere from it.

I enjoyed the magic side of these wet very quickly learn that the magic and mystery has inspiration from Egyptian Mythology. However I felt it read alittle shallow.

The characters were fun and I liked them but I would of liked more depth from them.

There is a romance subplot aswell. They have good tension and it's the kind of romance I think other people will eat up. Personally I would of liked a bit more development in it.

Overall this is an enjoyable book and I think alot of people are gunna love it, I just don't think it was for me. It was enjoyable but a lot of the development and world building felt surface level.

It does end really well, everything ties up nicely you could read it as a standalone. But it does have the kind of ending that suggests there could be another book. And I would read for me this was like a fun, easy popcorn book.
