A humorous and well written mix of dark comedy and thriller. It was a lot of fun and it was a page turner that kept me reading.
Go and read it.
Highly recommended.

Loved this book so much! Similar to Sweetpea for the attitude and sarcasm but with a softer side. Really gripping book and I especially loved the dynamics between the characters. Lots of real relationships to unpick and try to figure out how they fit together in the story.

My Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rounded down from 4.5, witty, funny and suspenseful really great!!

What if you thought you murdered your best friend?
What if almost everyone who knows you thought you murdered your best friend?
What if you were covered in your best friends blood … but you can’t remember anything let along murdering her??

For Lucy this is her world, she is found wandering the streets, covered in Savvy’s blood with no memory of what happened a massive head wound. Initially thought to be a victim the tables soon turn and everyone thinks Lucy did it… trouble is there is no evidence and she cannot remember.

Lucy moves away and tries to make a life for herself in LA but she is haunted by Savvy’s death and now years later a hugely popular True Crime Podcast “Listen for the Lie” is investigating and they want her to come on the show….

Lucy returns to the scene of the crime… as it were… but will she find what she is looking for or will the town finally get what they hope and see Lucy behind bars once and for all?

Ok wow, so I loved this… but the missing 1/2 star (because believe me I was set for 5 big fat stars) is due to the OTT ending.. it was just a little too far out in space for me… however… Please do not let that stop you reading this.

First of all Amy Tintera - keep them coming… this was so well written and so funny. I loved Lucy’s character. Some people may find her annoying but I found her extremely real with her sarcastic humour even in the most dire of moments… as a person who uses inappropriate gallows humour to get through tough situations I really loved her dry sarcastic take on … well everything.

This was so easy to read the entire way through it was just one of those books that I didn’t want to put down. I had read so many positive reviews that I thought for sure I would be the outlier in the end… but I was very pleasantly surprised. I actually laughed out loud a number of times at Lucy’s take on things….

Literally something I would actually say…
I finally muster the strength to step out of the car. It’s six o’clock in the evening, still light out, and still hot as balls. The heat’s relentless this time of year. It was a real dick move on Grandma’s par to be born in August.

Also this…
I can’t stop thinking about what Grandma said - that Ben is actually going to figure this out.
I feel like I owe it to Savvy to stay until he does.
Not to mention that I have nothing to go back to. I’m still fired, my boyfriend is now my ex-boyfriend, and I’ve yet to sign a lease on a new apartment. I might as well be here, even if here makes me want to punch myself in the face.

This sentiment is 100% true about kids…
A small, dark haired child with something blue smeared across his mouth opens the door after I knock.
“Hello,” I say.
He says nothing. He just stares. I’ve always admired the way kids unabashedly stare at you. They don’t care whether you’re uncomfortable. Kids have zero fucks to give about your feelings.

Safe to say those had my giggling and I loved every minute of it. I also really enjoyed the podcast which is different for me… because I normally really hate books featuring True Crime podcasts because I am yet to read one done well… Until now that is. This is excellent and I really enjoyed the angle it wasn’t taking itself too seriously and Ben was a great podcaster/love interest… he was likeable in an unlikeable way… so basically he was just a dude doing dude stuff.

I also really loved Lucy’s grandma she was excellent, shes a bit of a horn bag and a bit of drunk but she says what shes thinking and who doesn’t love a Texan Grandma who tells everyone what’s on her mind… I thought she was great. She was also one of the rare people in town that didn’t think Lucy was guilty so that was great.

So it all sounds really good as you can see and my only real qualms were I did kind of guess the baddie … which was fine but the final showdown / flash back was OTT as I mentioned. I was just a bit too ridiculous and got a bit stupid where I was doing a fair bit of eye rolling but.. it didn’t ruin it… just got a bit silly. I am really glad I read it…

Overall, if you like a bit of sarcastic humour with your mysteries (I wouldn’t really call this a thriller) and you don’t mind a little bit of sexual tension and sexy times… (nothing too crazy) then this is for you. I highly recommend to most people I think its going to be a super hit.

“An insult doesn’t have the intended impact when spelled incorrectly.  I’d reply to let them know, but, in my experience, dumbasses don’t appreciate having their spelling corrected.”

Despite the whole town believing she did, our MC Lucy, has no memory of murdering her best friend.  The evidence, whilst compelling, was not enough for a conviction –that never stopped the town from vilifying her.

Years later, Lucy has moved away, and her life, for the most part, is under control.  Cue a smug podcaster, determined to dredge up the past in the crusade to finally uncover the truth.  “Am I a murderer? You tell me …”

Told primarily in the present day from Lucy’s POV – we gain great insight to her inner voice and her motivations.   In addition we have flashback chapters, and podcast episodes scattered throughout.  I’m loving the use of podcasts and mixed media narratives for a more immersive reading experience (that sounds like another post I need to create!).

Lucy’s character is so well written and authentic, you can’t help but root for her; her humour and sarcasm was perfection!  A great example of a person shaped by her past.  Despite her flaws and deep-seated mistrust, her resilience and humor make her a compelling and endearing protagonist.

There’s a host of characters (but so many you lose track) some supportive (her lovely no-craps-given grandma), some just awful.  One in particular is a real piece of work – I love to hate a character, and I was not let down!  Another book that excellently shines a light on the privilege afforded to men.

If you’re looking an unputdownable and excellently paced dark-comedy-thriller I would not hesitate to recommend this.  But be warned, it’s a book you can easily lose a day to.

Listen for the lie by Amy Tintera was a solid and surprising hit for me. I was thoroughly invested in this story and found myself unable to put this book down. A truly dark comedy, well paced and full of suspense this book was so enjoyable while remaining an intriguing mystery thriller. The characters were believable if not altogether relatable and the witty conversations between them were one of my favourite things about this book. I will be eagerly anticipating the next release from this author.

Thanks to the author, Random House UK and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this smart and surprising book in exchange for an honest review

I really needed this book after several so so reads. This was riveting from the start and I finished it less than 15 hours after starting. (Including like 7 hours of sleep). This will be a great read for Book clubs, true crime podcast lovers and anyone that loves a good fast paced thriller.

Lucy finds herself as the star of a true crime podcast “Listen for the Lie.” Five years earlier, Lucy is accused of killing her best friend, but has amnesia surrounding the event. This , plus lack of evidence and no known witnesses leaves the case open. The chapters alternate between the podcast and what is happening as Lucy goes back to her home town to celebrate her grandmothers birthday. I can’t help but feel like I wanted one more twist in the final few pages, but great read. Will recommend to everyone.

I'm really sorry to the author for such a low star but I really really struggled to get into this book. The book started well and I liked the idea of the storyline. However I found myself losing interest about a third of the way through the book. I enjoyed the mystery and liked the dark humour it contained but I couldn't connect with any of the characters in the story. It has lots of great reviews, so perhaps its more to do with me than the book!

Lucy has no memory of the night that her best friend was murdered, but suspicion has fallen on her ever since she was found wandering the woods covered in blood. No arrest was made though, and five years later an intrepid reporter has brought everything back into the public interest with a true crime podcast about the murder...

I think I hate Lucy? Even though I also kind of love her ... Undecided, although she undoubtedly makes a lot of poor decisions. This was a really interesting mystery, and the podcast was a really good tool to keep the plot moving! Really enjoyed it.

Lucy has no memory of murdering her best friend, but most people believe that’s what she did. Five years on, the unproven case still hangs over her and comes back into the spotlight when a podcaster conducts his own investigation. Ideal for fans of mystery and suspense with a chick-lit-style, jocular narrator.

This starts off very well, a dry and breezy tone, interesting characters, humour. I sympathised with Lucy and her troubles and her family including Beverly, her unconventional gran, seemed normal and nice. Even Ben, the podcaster, seemed a good enough and largely well meaning guy.

As the story progresses, the pace slows a bit and we start to learn that people are not quite what they seem to be. In the end the truth comes out .... or does it? the last couple of pages are a bit disconcerting, especially when Lucy says "we" about her and Beverly, suggesting that the two of them had concocted a plan and everything had worked out as they wanted it to. This made me wonder and start to have doubts but maybe I am overthinking it.

This is a page turner and a good read which I will be reading again.

I really enjoyed this mystery! I've found that I like it when there's memory loss and you're discovering things along with the character and you don't know what's true or false until the end. The ending was a bit underwhelming, but the road there was interesting and engaging. I liked the way the story moved, the mixed media with the podcast, and the characters. A solid read!

This is a jump in and hang on ride thriller from beginning to end. If you like dark, smart, witty adult thrillers I heartily recommend this as your next read. The first few pages suggest the snarky humour that pervades throughout the book. What do you do if everyone thinks you’re a killer, and you can’t remember a thing, your life is a mess, and your best friend is dead? I think trusting your Gran is a good place to start! What a truly marvellous story! I was really routing for Lucy but at the same time had my doubts due to her inner dialogue having some dark moments. I had no idea what was coming or where the story was leading and everything was a surprise. Tintera creates such an atmosphere that the words jump off the page and I vividly pictured the scenes and the characters. It’s a very fast paced book making it truly difficult to put down and I found myself walking around with my kindle everywhere😂

With jumps from Lucy’s narrative to the podcast interviews, as readers we are invited to more information as Lucy learns it.

If you like a good murder mystery with some dark comedic moments this book is certainly for you.

A delightfully fun, comic, and entertaining murder mystery from Amy Tintera, full of charm, snark, and wit that had me gripped and turning the pages of this thrilling read. Lucy Chase makes for a wonderful in your face protagonist, 5 years ago a traumatised Lucy with a head injury is discovered with the blood of her murdered best friend on her dress, Savannah 'Savvy' Harper, in the small town location of Plumpton in Texas. Suffering from amnesia, Lucy goes to LA in the face of a community that believes she murdered Savvy, including her parents. For all she knows, she might have killed Savvy, but there was no evidence to charge her. However, she is plagued by what happened as she tries to establish a new life, writing romance novels under another name.

The past refuses to be pushed down, there is now a smug, well known, handsome true crime podcasr host, Ben Owens of 'Listen for the Lie, determined to investigate and solve the case, and Lucy's glorious, loyal, and scintillating grandma, Beverly, the only one who had believed in her innocence, persuades her to return for her 80th birthday. So Lucy returns to a place that views her as a killer, hearing voices in her head, constantly thinking of killing, perhaps the time has come to confront the past and the truth of what happened? Full of fears, she joins forces with Ben, conducting interviews with those who believe she is a killer. There are twists and turns in a exciting well plotted narrative, uncovering Plumpton's dark secrets, all sorts of shenanigans, gaslighting, abuse, and infidelity.

The short chapters heighten the levels of suspense and tensions in a story that will have you trying to work out who the killer is. I thought Lucy was a fabulously well created character that you cannot but help feel for, and want to support, she is so brave in wanting to know the truth, no matter what it is, and whilst much of the flawed supporting cast is not particularly likeable, Grandma Beverly proves to be a shining star. This is terrific and I can see it appealing to a wide range of readers. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

I absolutely loved this book. Listen For The Lie is Amy Tintera’s first novel for adults, although she has written many previous book for Young adults. It is an absolute brilliant read.
Lucy is suspected by almost everyone as being a murderer, the person who killed her best friend, Savy, five years ago. Lucy has a huge problem when it comes to defending herself against the allegations, all she can say is that she doesn’t know if she did it or not! A podcaster decides he is going to look into Savy’s death and try to do what the police have failed to do; find out who killed Savy. Was it Lucy or somebody else? If it was Lucy, how will she cope, knowing she is a murderer, and that she killed her best friend?
This is so very well written. Lucy, despite being suspected of murder, is a funny, intelligent and thoroughly entertaining protagonist. I really had no idea whether or not she was a murderer.
Highly recommended.

I love books where there's a podcast and a murder! I saw this book on Instagram a few months ago and knew I had to read it. At first, though, I was thrown off by this book because the protagonist is the sarcastic suspect of the crime rather than the usual murder-solving podcaster. But Lucy was hilarious and I had a lot of fun reading it.

The first half of the book made me laugh out loud several times and I also slowly came to care about the characters a lot. There's humor, mystery and some other surprising deeper things here.

While I thought there were a few too many romantic interests for Lucy, I otherwise thought this was a great book! Thanks to Netgalley and Bantam for the advanced e-copy!

Absolutely adored this book and have been straight on amazon looking for more novels from the author. Lucy is the subject of a podcast as it's unclear if she murdered her best friend or not. Lucy herself cannot remember the night and the lingering questions surrounding the event has led her to flee her hometown but now she is ready to return and face it all.

Had a great time with this book! The main character was funny, honest and really. It made the reading really smooth and fast pace, it's definitely going to be one of the best reads for the year for me. Can't wait to see more from this author.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for letting me read it early, it got me out of my read hole!!

This was a fun and suspenseful murder mystery. It was incredibly engaging and I loved the podcast element, especially as someone who regularly listens to True Crime Podcasts
