A delightful collection of profiles of 50 country birds of North America. The writing is whimsical and very evocative - loved it. Informative, with great portraits drawing out their personalities, there´s a map (always a great addition!) and some pages for the reader´s observations - it´s a perfect book for birdwatching amateurs and beginners, or just people craving some birds-related reading every once in a while, such as myself. The cover is just beautiful, the illustrations as well. I´m not sure about the aesthetics of the pages containing the text though. They look like they´re done without much care or taste, but maybe it´s just me.

When I first saw this book, it instantly reminded me of my grandma and her love of birdwatching. Because of her influence, I’ve become more interested in the birds around me, although I’ve gotten nowhere near as experienced as she is at identifying the birds I see.

Country Bird is a beautiful blend of field guide and just plain delight in the varieties of birds out there. Although I was familiar with many of the birds in here, it was fun to get to know a little about them—their feeding habits, their courting habits, how they sing, or a variety of other fascinating topics relating to each bird.

If you’re looking for a traditional field guide, this isn’t it. But if you’re new to birding—or are curious about what birds you’re seeing outside—this could be an excellent companion. With full-page illustrations, whimsical Southernisms or other common sayings, and intriguing descriptions of each bird, you get a feel for what you’re seeing out in your front yard—without being overloaded with facts.

I had a lot of fun reading this lighthearted book. If you’re looking for a gift for a birdwatcher, this could be an excellent choice. I also think it would be popular with younger (and older!) children because of the vibrant illustrations. I hope this series will continue, and eventually include birds from other parts of the world besides the US—this was a delightful way to get to know common birds and some of their peculiar habits!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.

If you have ever wanted to know about birds but did not want to suffer through the technical vocabulary and bland facts, this book is for you. The facts are there, but they are crafted in a phenomenal way that makes it feel like you're having a glass of lemonade on a front porch watching the birds fly by. This book is bursting with country puns, colorful pictures, and information to gain the interest of any one who has ever seen a bird and wondered what the name of it was.

This book is a perfect whimsical book for all ages. The drawings are beautiful and each bird has a short well written description on where they are found and their behavior. My favorite is California Quail - the drawing captures their beautiful essence so well. At the end, there is a chart of all 50 birds and in which states to find them. Also, as a bonus there is a glossary of country slang -- I just loved this! A very fun read.

Such an interesting take on a bird book. This book showcases birds (I didn't count, but I think it is around 50 or so) thought to be "country" birds, from across the U.S. Each bird has an illustration, a quirky southern saying or description, and then the actual description. If you want to learn how to differentiate them from other birds or spot them, this is probably not the best book option - but if you are looking for a creative description this was cute.

The writing style can be very off-putting and slightly cringey at times but it was creative so I have to give the author credit for that. Each bird had a saying associated with them, akin to "bless her heart" or "a bit much" that have other meanings than stated. There is even a section for defining these at the end of the book. This was entertianing, but could also be too much for those actually looking for information about birds. At times it was even a little frustrating.

I liked learning about the birds, some descriptions were really good along those lines, some were more for enterainment than teaching though.

Since I was reading an early, ebook copy, some of the illustrations didn't live up to expectation and were a bit pixelated but I think that in the final copy they will be better - so try to take a look before buying.

Overall, this was quirky and cute, but more entertainment than educational.

The books is absolutely gorguous! The information was basic, but that was the intend of the book, so very well done. The book can be enjoyed if you're not from the US.

The word Country bird was used too much for my liking. And the quotes at the end felt very random.
Other then that, lovely read, would recommend.

Heavens to Betsy, that was fun! Is this the most detailed bird book you will every find? Not a chance. It might be the most charming though and it's a fun read. In the best way, it leaves you feeling connected to the birds you are learning about. They feel memorable and the lyrical nature of the details will help casual birdwatcher keep an eye out for these beautiful birds. The illustrations are whimsical and beautiful. A beautiful book for someone who loves to look at the birds in their backyard.

Country Bird is a cute, comforting coffee table book that can bring out the bird lover in anyone. This book combines the Southern ideal of 'never met a stranger' with general avian information. While this book included some general information about the birds, I really loved that it was more about their personalities (and fun tidbits about them). The introduction mentions that the book aims to "become connected with birds" rather than a lesson on classifying or labeling them, and I think than was accomplished. I thoroughly enjoyed the graphic design and illustrations. I'm from the country and was still unfamiliar with some of the southern-isms written above the birds. I will be adding "useful as a tit on a boar hog" and "busier than a bee in a tar bucket" to my vocabulary expeditiously. I really enjoyed the chapter at the end, "Sayin's & Such." Overall, it was nice to learn more about the personality of my favorite birds in a fun format.

Oh my goodness, this book is utterly charming! A little difficult to read on the NetGalley app due to formatting, but definitely fun and feel-good.

Country Bird talks about the different birds that you may see in rural areas. Blue jays get no more sympathy than they did in Audobon's famous works on birds. We get matching pictures, and a reminder of how nature can be beautiful. I learned about new species that had never crossed my nerdy way, like the Bobolink. That it exists is a delight, to be able to say that name. And more of them show who migrates, and who does not migrate.

Country Bird by Angela Harrison Vinet and Janis Hatten Harrison is a charming and beautifully-illustrated little treasure with about approximately 100 common American birds. I see many in Canada and some in Europe, too. Each bird is illustrated so wonderfully that each is easily identifiable. Particular characteristics each is known for is also included such as a cluster of a specific species which is called a banditry, birds which think nothing of diving at people to protect their babies, the "rice bird" which is new to me, the bird which nests in almost anything including old shoes, birds which attack so viciously they injures its prey, cheery birds and cranky birds, mimicry, strange nests which hardly seem safe, the bird with an adorable mohawk and the bird which ensures the survival its fittest baby.

There is also a wee section of American country expressions and their origins.

This would be a lovely gift for a bird lover to ogle beloved favourites but not for those seeking an educational field guide. The information contained on each bird is witty and interesting but not in depth or scientific in any way. However, not everyone wishes encyclopedic bird books, such as my mom who will be thrilled to flick through the pages and smile.

I loved this illustrated book about birds, with the information about each one as well as the beautiful illustrations. This would be a great read for bird lovers and for those wanting to learn more about specific birds.

This is a fun little book about birds often found in rural America. Each featured bird has an illustration, some sort of related saying or idiom, and a description of its appearance and/or behaviors. It’s not a traditional guidebook. It had the overall feel of a journal or a scrapbook. Like something a grandparent may pass on to young birders to share what they know.

nonfiction/birding - a short ode to 100 or so common birds seen in the U.S. Organized alphabetically by name, each bird is treated with a lovely full-color illustrated portrait and a short, entertaining blurb that reveals a bit of its character. The map ("Where Y'at?") included on pages 64-65 shows that the book includes birds found throughout the continental US and Alaska, but does not indicate the various ranges or migration patterns, functioning more as an index with page numbers than as a visual guide.

Though not much help as a bird guide (not being organized in any useful way, and good luck identifying a lot of these hard-to-see species with only a brief description of habitat/habits and calls), this is an enjoyable book for bird enthusiasts of all ages, with plenty of interesting info tidbits that I didn't know; I certainly wouldn't mind returning to this book for a re-read.

I learnt some new things about different species while enjoying the environment that the book creates. This backyard bird guide includes a list of birds with kitschy descriptions. I wish it included more information such as where/when these birds can be found and more on how to ID them. This information would make the book more helpful, even for casual birders.

A stunning look at 50 country birds, with gorgeous illustrations, brief descriptions of each including their unique birdsongs, a geographical map of where you can find them, and a section at the back for documenting your sightings. A wonderful resource for any birder!
