Ahh I loved this book - I really liked the concept of the story, it felt like something different and original.

I thought this story had such great characters, I really liked Delphie and was rooting so much for her love story - I thought the book was packed with great amounts of humour and banter and it wasn’t just a straightforward read, which for a romance will set it out from the crowd. Well worth a read - I don’t want to say too much to avoid spoiling, but definitely one I’ll recommend to romance lovers

Honestly reading this made me so grumpy, my kids weren’t feeling well, I wasn’t feeling well I didn’t wanna put the book down, I needed to know what was going to happen yet I had so much to do I really wasn’t enjoying it! BUT when I finally got the time to sit and read WOW an absolutely fantastic story of overcoming trauma (bullying) and finding yourself! Littered with reading references, the storyline made me laugh, cringe and cry! Absolutely gorgeous story and something different from the usual romance books out there, I’ve never encountered a plot quite like it before! Also has a little bit of spice 🌶️🌶️

In a Nutshell: Romcom with a small dash of magical realism and a hefty splash of serious themes. A great premise that started with a bang, then got repetitive, then again became interesting, and ended with a bang. I’d have liked this better in my younger days. Still, a fun entertainer if you don’t overthink the proceedings and don’t mind the FMC.

Plot Preview:
Twenty-seven-year-old Delphie, a loner who works in a pharmacy, has just begun dinner when she chokes to death on her cheap microwave burger. She ‘wakes up’ to find herself in ‘Evermore’, the place of the afterlife that seems more like it belongs on earth. Just as Delphie is being acquainted with the procedures of her new abode, she bumps into a young man named Jonah and has an instant connection with him. Sadly (for her, not for him), he isn’t dead and is sent back to earth. But a certain someone takes pity on the lonely young woman and gives her a second chance, albeit with a proviso: if she can find Jonah of the unknown last name back in London and get him to kiss her within ten days, she can get her life back. Will Delphie rise up to this challenge and locate ‘the love of her afterlife’?
The story comes to us in Delphie’s first person perspective.

Bookish Yays:
💐 This might be the first time I read about a main character choking to death in the very first chapter, and still didn’t feel any pain. I love the casual approach in which this scene was written. Had it been more traumatic, the mood would have been set incorrectly right at the beginning.
💐 The premise is unique enough to be a yay. Finding an insta-attraction as soon as you are dead and getting a chance to find your one true love? Lucky unlucky Delphie! Couldn’t blame her for grabbing onto any condition to return to earth in a bid to live more and love more!
💐 There are tongue-in-cheek appearances of romance tropes such as enemies to lovers, one bed, and insta connections. There are also several mentions of popular romance authors, books, and movies sprinkled throughout the book. This might go either way, but I liked the pop culture references: it added a dash of contemporary realism to the story.
💐 There are several secondary characters that are even more layered than the lead pair: Delphie’s work friend Leanne and her mother Jen, Delphie’s next-door neighbour the elderly Mr. Yoon, librarian Aled, and new friend Frida. Some of them are a bit over the top, but they suit the tone of the story. More importantly, they are likeable, and that helps when the FMC gives mixed vibes.
💐 I love how the story ended up more about finding oneself than about finding the one true love. A valuable lesson about living life to the fullest because we never know when it’s our time to kick the bucket.
💐 Though the story is mostly light-hearted, it tackles some serious themes such as bullying, loneliness, grief, childhood trauma, and parental abandonment. I appreciate the depiction of how everyone handles trauma differently and there’s no standard pattern.
💐 Many fun interactions and witty banter between the lead pair, and some heart-warming moments in the climax.
💐 I love the found family trope when it is done with enough heart, and in this book, though it takes time to get going, the concept is handled really well.

Bookish Mixed Bags:
🌷 Delphie is a tough character to root for at the start. Though she had her positives, her social skills are almost zero. Thankfully, she does redeem herself by the end. Her turnaround from a rude loner to an I’ll-do-everything-I-can-to-stay-alive is a bit too sudden to be convincing, but under such circumstances with only ten days between (after)life and permanent death, who is to say how we would have behaved in her place?
🌷 Downstairs neighbour Cooper, who is roped in to help Delphie locate Jonah, is an interesting character, fitting the mould of “enemy” perfectly. It is evident right from his first mention which pair the book is supporting. However, there was one red flag in his behaviour that is conveniently brushed aside: his womanising.
🌷 This is a genre-defying book. It starts off strongly as a fantasy, but the dominant genre almost throughout the story is romcom, with a little garnishing of magical realism. Great if you want a romcom. I wanted more magical realism, so this ends up as a mixed bag.
🌷 The afterlife and its events create a mixed impression. While I do love the unexpectedness of the location, I am still sad that it was what it was. (No woman will look at that place and think, “Yay! What a wonderful afterlife!” Sigh… ) More than this, I am not sure how I feel about many of the *bodily functions* that continue in the afterlife. Who wants more of the same life even after death!
🌷 Once Delphie returns to earth with her ten-day challenge, the tempo slackens a lot and the events become repetitive. The last one-third or so saves the story to a great extent, though it zooms by at F1 speed compared to the rest of the book.
🌷 I love the resolution of all arcs. Though the destination is predictable, as it always is in romcoms, it was still interesting to see how it comes about. That said, a certain event towards the end is so farfetched that I had to put this in my Mixed Bags than under the Yays.

Bookish Nays:
🌵 Jonah’s arc is unbelievably unrealistic. I might have accepted his perfect portrayal had this been a romcom spoof. (I still am not sure if it is indeed a spoof!)
🌵 This is more of a ME problem than a BOOK problem. I don't vibe with the idea that “sex is the most fun you can have on earth.” (Misleading, false, and also inappropriate when there is more awareness these days of asexuality.) I found it ridiculous that anyone could find the idea of a twenty-seven-year-old virgin ridiculous. A person’s sex life is no one’s business, and the idea that Delphie had not lived to the fullest just because she died without having sex is, frankly speaking, idiotic. (As you might guess, the ten days on earth involve the tackling of this ‘problem.’ The proceedings aren’t that steamy, but they aren’t closed-door either.)

All in all, this definitely was an entertaining book, with the second half proving much stronger than the first half. If it had been more consistent in its tempo and slightly less repetitive in between, it could have been a bigger winner for me.

That said, I’m no longer an active romance reader as I have done my fill of swoony reading in my younger days. I had grabbed this novel mainly for the idea of the ‘afterlife.’ Unfortunately, most of the story is a typical romance, so my experience ended slightly mixed. This shouldn’t take away from the story as it will work better for romcom fans.

Recommended to avid romance readers who would enjoy a magical twist to typical romcoms.

3.5 stars, rounding up as much of the disconnect was due to my reading preferences.

My thanks for a complimentary copy via NetGalley. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This was AMAZING.
I love Kirsty Greenwood's books, for their humour and warm characters, and this one has topped them all.
It was hilarious, I roared laughing at a few scenes, and Merritt was a superb character to convey them.
She was hysterical, and is my favourite character that I've read recently.
This was one of those books that makes you think you aren't sure what will happen, and you aren't sure what you WANT to happen, so you just read it and enjoy the ride!
It is such an easy read, perfect for my bedtime reading, and I was sad when it was over.
This has just confirmed again that I can read any Greenwood book and be thoroughly entertained for the duration.
Fabulous.

Kirsty Greenwood - The Love Of My Afterlife.

It’s been a while since we last heard from Kirsty Greenwood, so I was thrilled to see that she has brought us hungry readers a shiny new tale to fall in love with.

#TheLoveOfMyAfterlife is about twenty something Delphie, who lives her life alome.
A bit of over enthusiastic chomping on a burger sees Delphie depart this world for the afterlife.

Delphie finds it all very bizarre up there, but a chance encounter with a heavenly hottie, leads to Delphie being given a second chance at life. She has ten days to complete her mission. If she fails, then it’s back to the other side for her, but this time there will be no coming back.

There are some wonderful characters in this book. They come together beautifully and create something quite special.
Delphie’s relationship with her mute, elderly neighbour, Mr Yoon is incredibly touching, raw and heart warming.

Delphie’s other neighbour Cooper, is sexy and brooding, but also a bit of a grump! However, he is so much more than Delphie believes him to be.

I can’t praise this book enough. It’s quite honestly a complete joy from start to finish.
I totally fell in love with Delphie and her gang of friends. Friends that she never knew she had or even needed in her life.

#TheLoveOfMyAfterlife is laugh out loud funny. I challenge anyone to read this book and not crack a smile. It’s just not possible. Kirsty Greenwood’s natural and sharp wit shines through in her writing style.

If you like your books with a big warm heart, great humour, loveable characters, a plot that will move you and melt you into a puddle of mush… you will adore The Love Of My Afterlife.

It’s great to have you back Kirsty Greenwood, you’ve been missed, but it’s fair to say that #TheLoveOfMyAfterlife was worth the wait.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What an absolutely lovely book. I've been in a bit of a reading slump. Nothing seems to have gripped me. Then I started this and read it in a few days as I loved it. Delphine and Cooper are such great characters. I loved Merrit too. In fact all of the people in this book are brilliant. Even though it's such a far fetched story it's so believable. A really enjoyable read. I need to search out more of her books.

I loved this book so much that I got myself both the British and American editions (fingers crossed a book subscription box picks it up for a special edition).
It wasn’t just a beautiful, quirky contemporary rom-com but also an ode to book lovers (especially of the romance variety): all the name-droppings got me feeling like I wanted to high five Kirsty Greenwood for her impeccable taste.

The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood is a terrific romcom with an interesting and unique plot.

Delphie dies suddenly and alone after choking on a microwave burger. She ends up in a place called Evermoor (think "The Good Place" but with washing machines) Whilst in this weird and heavenly waiting room she meets her soul mate, Jonah. But here's the kicker, Jonah is not meant to be in Evermoor and is quickly returned to the land of the living. Delphie is offered a deal where she can return to her previous life, but she must find and kiss her mystery man to gain a second chance at life. So, armed only with his first name and that he lives somewhere in London Delphie has 10 days to complete her mission. The clock is ticking.

This book has everything you want from a romcom. There are quirky characters, hilarious escapades and swoon worthy romance. But most of all I enjoyed Delphie's journey and growth as a character. She brought the most tender and heartwarming moments to the story that made me cry happy tears. This book is just begging to be made into a film.

Really struggled to keep interested in this story, felt it fell flat and characters weren’t doing it for me, maybe it’s a more it’s me not you situation, really wanted to like this by DNF’d a couple times.

Delphie meets Johan in the afterlife, and after she is sent back to earth she has 10 days to find him. She enlists the help of neighbour Cooper to help her, with some surprises along the way. A fun and fast paced read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book for free in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own.

I was super excited to get approved for this book because it has been on my list of upcoming reads this summer and I was looking forward to it. This book defied my expectations and as much as I thought I was going to enjoy this book, I actually enjoyed it even moreso! Compared to some romances, I didn't think that this book was predictable either, and the ending kind of left me speechless! I am definitely going to look out for more books by Kirsty Greenwood in the future!

This book was gushy, lovable romance meets The Good Place. I loved the task Delphie was set to remain on Earth, the lengths she went to achieve it and everything that happened as a result. This book was so comforting and enjoyable I completely devoured it. Super cute and easy to read, I adored every moment.

This really is an incredible book and once you start it is impossible to put down. If this is not picked up at some point and made into a film I will be really surprised.
Reviewers have said it has humour heart and a heroine that you will be rooting for. This is underselling it. It is not predictable at all and I really wondered what would happen right up to the end.
A must buy and I will certainly be catching the author at her book tour!

Loved the premise of this book - it’s a contemporary romance that’s so funny and cute
I was rooting for Delphie all the way through, even though the plan was ridiculous - to find the man and make him kiss her
A fab easy summer read that I would highly recommend
Just crying out to be made into a film adaptation
Thanks @kirsty.greenwood @centurybooksuk and @netgalley for the fab summer read

Such a cute story! I absolutely loved Delphi and her story. There were some of my favorite tropes in one book: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, and found family! I’ve already purchased my own copy for my shelves :)

Without having read the synopsis, I judged this book by its cover, and I’m pretty pleased with my judgment, too! There is something for every reader between the pages, and I absolutely loved getting to know Delphie and her mess of a life. I’ve never eaten a microwave burger, and I now feel pretty smug about that fact.
The essence of this book is founded in comedy, but like all the best books of this genre, there’s a serious message within the pages. Delphie lives a pretty solitary life except for her commitment to her downstairs neighbour, Mr Yoon, and her job in the local pharmacy; she rarely interacts with anyone unless you want to include the rare exchanges with the other obnoxious residents in her building.
The premise for this story is terrific, and I genuinely loved the scenario of being returned to life to track down a soulmate. Of course, with only the knowledge that he lives in London, Delphie has her work cut out, and not just because of the size of the hiding place.
Following Delphie’s exploits was an absolute joy. The narrative kept me laughing as she went from one embarrassing moment to the next. I genuinely loved seeing her learn more about the people she had previously written off without getting to know them. The exchanges between Delphie and Emmet were filled with sassiness, witty and cleverly imagined.
There is no question that the character development is expertly handled, as Delphie and Co. go from being one-dimensional to fully formed and easily imagined in a film. This is a very special story that fully captured my imagination and has me looking forward to the next book from this talented author.

I loved this book! Cinematic, heartwarming and hilarious.

I had so much fun getting to know all the incredibly endearing characters throughout the story and joining Delphie on her quest to reclaim life. Expertly paced with plenty of twists and turns and peppered with british humour had me giggling non-stop. Add in the most poignant moments of human connection, The Love of My Afterlife was just so sweet.

Brb while I go and seize the day with all of the endorphins this book has produced.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for the E-ARC!

On arriving in limbo - that place between life and death which in this case looks remarkably like a
laundrette - Delphi finds herself stood face to face with the most gorgeous man she’s ever met. Not expecting this turn of events she’s obviously wearing that tired old nightie you only wear when you’ve no intention of answering the door. But when she thinks it can’t get any worse it turns out a ‘clerical error’ means he shouldn’t be there at all, and back to earth, memory erased he goes! Luckily her afterlife therapist Merritt is a sucker for romance story and agrees to give Delphi 10 days grace to go get her man! Love will save her life if, and only if, she can hunt him down and get him to willingly kiss her.

There are loads of familiar romance novel favourites mentioned which is a fun addition and a stellar cast of characters in particular Delphi, Cooper and Mr Yoon. With a very different telling of a well known trope this book is a must read even, if like me, romance isn’t your go to.

The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood is a light hearted and fun story. It is a very British rom-com and events reflect many of the romance tropes found in books. A different look at romance and finding love where you least expect it. An enemies to lovers, forced proximity tale that does deal with death and grief but is also full of hope and love. What happens when you meet the love of your life in the afterlife? Her life is at stake but who will save her?

Delphie Bookham works in a London pharmacy, she has a quirky personality and lives alone.
She was badly bullied in high school so keeps to herself. Her only friends are her two work colleagues and one of her neighbours because the other one is grumpy and rude. Just as she thinks her life couldn’t get any worse, she chokes to death on a burger and dies.

Shocked at being dead, she finds herself at client arrivals and meeting her assigned Afterlife Therapist. Merritt is very enthusiastic about her job and is going to help Delphie negotiate the transition from living to not living. Delphie can’t believe this is the end and tries to leave, which results in her crashing into a beautiful stranger who has just arrived. There is an instant chemistry and connection between them. She is shocked her usual nerves aren’t there and he looks at her like no other man ever has.

Unfortunately there has been a mix up and he’s not actually dead so is sent back. Delphie can’t believe she has just met her soulmate so why can’t she be sent back too? Luckily Merritt is a hopeless romantic and comes up with a solution. Ten days back on earth to find him and if he kisses her of his own free will, she could stay and continuing living her life. However, she doesn’t know his full name or where he lives.

Cooper, her mysterious but despicable neighbour, finds her collapsed on her floor and she is confused at first, thinking she has just had a weird dream. The fun begins as she races round London trying to find her Jonah. She is assisted by an eclectic group of secondary characters who help her with her social awkwardness, build up her confidence and bring plenty of entertainment to the adventure.

There are hilarious incidents along the way and some clever and very devious interference which leads to an unexpected turn of events. There are also other twists and turns which give some really interesting revelations. I loved how all the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together and
Delphie finds a group of friends and a family who truly love her and all her idiosyncrasies. I think it would make a good film as it is an unique and hilarious look at trying to find your soul mate. This is my first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it so will keep an eye out for her next one.
