Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from Netgalley. This was a fun read, although I found the main character a bit grating. I enjoyed the concept, and Morrey skillfully set the novel over the course of one day, while maintaining the pace and keeping it engaging.

Lucky Day is the third novel by British author, Beth Morrey. The catalyst might have been any of a number of things: the forks upside down in the dishwasher; a name on the guest list sent, by her boss’s PA, to be vetted; the Vicodin she took for a rotten headache, then topped up with an antihistamine; or the knock on the head from a careless businessman’s briefcase on the train. Whatever it was, on this Thursday 16th June, forty-six-year-old executive producer at Red Eye Productions, Clover Hendry is acting very much out of character.

Her boss, and the rest of the team, are speechless when this normally submissive colleague insults him and walks out. But it feels so good that Clover leaves the building, headed for an art show she’s been wanting to see. A slight detour with her best friend, Susie, via her club for a swim in improvised swimwear, her altercation with disapproving management posted on Instagram by an amused observer.

Over the course of the next twelve hours, Clover surprises herself and those who know her. She refuses to be intimidated by two city types who try to take her cab, escapes a boring book club obligation, vandalises a car to save a small animal, placates a client, exerts her authority and demands a pay rise, gets a radical hairdo and buys a Regency-style dream dress (with pockets!). She manages to upset a gay friend, hijacks a ride-on mower, thwarts a suicide threat, handles some Class A drugs and gets revenge for a twenty-year grievance.

Many of Clover’s encounters or the incidents during her day prompt flashbacks to her past that demonstrate just how she became ever acquiescent, incapable of saying no: “I keep thinking back to moments when I let my natural cowardice get the better of me, allowing myself to be ignored, slighted, overlooked, rebuked. My innate fear of rocking the boat condemned me to a life spent tiptoeing around, polite smile plastered on, apologizing and throwing my cloak on the floor for everyone. Mostly my mother, admittedly, but it’s a habit that bled out and infected every part of my existence, until I’d effectively erased myself.”

To watch the relief it affords her to finally reject compliance, to stand up for herself, is truly heartening, as well as being entertaining. “It’s not easy making a fuss. Standing up for yourself can be awkward and embarrassing. Causing a scene is mortifying. Saying no is hard. But I think, finally, I might be getting the hang of it.” Incredibly moving and laugh-out-loud funny.

LOVED this 😍

A quietly powerful story about second chances, unexpected friendships, and the everyday courage it takes to keep going. Ethel is unforgettable—sharp, stubborn, and full of heart. Beth Morrey’s writing is tender and wise, reminding us that hope often shows up in the smallest moments.

Perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes and Eleanor Oliphant.

Lucky Day was a really enjoyable read, allowing you to see the consequences of what would happen if you were to cast your responsibilities aside for a day. Maybe not quite as extreme as some of Clover's exploits, but I really enjoyed them nonetheless! I also think the writer did an excellent job at addressing a really serious topic, the way the book was so lighthearted before you realised what has happened to Clover was really well written. Thanks NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book!

Ok where do I start?
I thought I’d try something new, I liked it, I didn’t, I’m really not sure,
I’m a crime addict and hoped this would make me read other books but sadly this was not for me,

"Lucky Day" is a fascinating comedy of incidents. A day that starts out as normal for Clover goes completely awry when she takes too much and possibly expired painkillers, which by the time she gets to work has removed all of the restraints she's had on her life. He tells his boss off when he gives another endless speech in a meeting, goes to the park in the middle of the day to meet a friend, eats foods he wouldn't normally allow herself to eat, contacts people she hasn't talked to in a long time, and all these activities are accompanied by humorous incidents. Even if the ending is more serious, it's a perfect ending to this fun day.
Take any British sitcom and you get this book. A very enjoyable read!

While this one started a bit topsy-turvy and the ongoing edge of anxiety really got my heart racing in a not-so-pleasurable way, somewhere along these lines, it became a quest to find out what was going on with Clover, what was happening...and then what she'd do next!
I got engrossed in this tale, and with chapters or scenes seeming to veer between the present day (literally) and Clover's past which foretells or explains the present, it became like a sort of puzzle where you expect you'll find all the pieces and get answers to your questions as you go along.
In this aspect, the book does not disappoint! It takes getting close to the end for it all to make sense (or even start making sense), so stick with it - it does deliver, and it's a good one.
Didn't want to put this one down at some point past the initial meeting at Clover's work, and it's been a long time a book has captivated me so much.
Definitely also going to give Beth Morrey's other books a look now.

Loved the idea of this story as a fellow people pleaser, and enjoyed that it wasn’t predictable. It did get a bit outrageous at times but I kind of loved that, was such an easy read, I romped through it

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a lot of messy girl literary fiction vibes that I usually go for. The storyline and the characters were all really well rounded, I can’t wait to recommend this book to others.

Lucky Day is a witty, warm and inspiring story that follows a people-pleaser’s day of rebellion. Clover Hendry decides it’s finally time to do what she pleases, walking out of work one morning and crashing from one incident to the next, refusing to worry about anything or anyone but herself. Hilarious, delightful, relatable, uplifting and outrageous, this book left me thinking we should all be more Clover and take time out for ourselves more often, though preferably without committing any crimes.

I absolutely loved Beth Morrey’s previous novel so was looking forward to reading Lucky Day.
Clover Hendry is a middle aged, over worked and overwhelmed woman when one morning circumstances lead her to walk out of work, say no and take control of her life.
This was both a funny and powerful novel that really resonated with me. Beth Morrey skilfully balances humour and making an important statement about the lives of many middle aged women. An enjoyable read.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
3.5 stars.

"Finally, I saw that worrying had come to nothing. And gave it up. And took my old body and went out into the morning, and sang."

We have all experienced moments of overwhelming stress and the need for a break from our daily routines. You need a break from life.

Clover Hendry finds herself in a challenging situation. She experienced an emotional breakdown at work and is struggling with debilitating headaches. The cumulative effect of these stressors becomes overwhelming, leading this typically reserved and mild-mannered Clover to assertively express her thoughts and feelings, disregarding the potential for offending others. She decides to prioritize herself. She is going to take a day for herself and do things that she's never done before. She is claiming back her voice and her life... with hilarious results at times!.

Another great read by Beth Morrey! I have been a fan since her first book, Saving Missy, and always look forward to a new book from her.
Her characters are relatable and ordinary people who face everyday problems that we can all identify with.
A great read!!

Clover’s like many of us, juggling work and family, trying to keep bosses, colleagues, parents and children all happy. Until one day when it all falls apart.
A day that could turn into a disaster however becomes a truly lucky day as she sheds the duties she should be doing and takes a wild ride through her life, throwing everything up in the air.
A great read packed with fun for anyone who wonders whether they could do things differently

A hilarious day in the life of mid aged wife, mother, and television producer Clover who after mixing some vicodin and antihistamines, ends up in a tumble with a minor concussion and a flippant attitude towards the rest of her day. She decides to have a frig it all attitude and dives headlong into a series of escapades with comedic consequences. Underneath it all is an overworked, overwhelming, overwhelmed woman, who is smothering the real issues so she can function. As the day hightails into madness , there is no way around it anymore, Clover must face her problems head-on. #luckyday #bethmorrey #netgalley

I read a lot of thrillers so it was nice to read something lighter.

Really enjoyed the character building of Clover and loved her attitude!

It made me laugh and if you are looking for a bit of light relief in a story then I recommend this.

For the most part I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I loved the character of Clover and the idea that for one day she is going to do what she wants and tell people how it really is.

Large parts of the book are joyous, exuberant and very funny. The one thing that let it down for me was the lack of clarity/resolution on why Clover behaved like this and the fallout from it…I felt we were going to discover it was all a dream, or there would be a lot of clearing up to do…but no. And maybe that is the point, that if we were all a bit more Clover the world wouldn’t implode as we assume?

Clover’s day is over the top, seemingly had more than 24 hours in it, but also manages to balance being laugh out loud funny as well as heart breaking poignant.

For character and a joyous read this is 5 stars but the concept missed a trick for me in not having a bit of resolution so 4 stars. A very enjoyable read.

Clover is us all! In this day and age we all need to stand up for ourselves a bit more and Clover made me laugh whilst doing it.

Good for a light holiday read.
