This was another gripping Will Trent book focused on a murder discovered whilst Will and Sara were on honeymoon. This proved to be very well plotted with some interesting characters and suspects with plenty of twists as the story unfolded. I struggled to put this book down as it was so compelling and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is the first book I’ve read by Karin Slaughter so I’m not familiar with the characters in the series. In this thriller, in which a murder takes place in an exclusive, isolated resort with a limited number of suspects, is full of twists and unexpected reveals. However, I found the writing a bit difficult to get past - it felt more like a student draft than a polished professional finished work. I’m not sure I’ll be coming back for more from this author though I understand she is exceptionally popular so it might just not be for me!

I had never encountered Will Trent before, so not knowing some of the backstories might seem negative. However, you quickly slip into the book's theme, the complexities surrounding Will Trent. A honeymoon in a peaceful place, what could go wrong? A murder, a chaotic family, where does it all lead, and is the past catching up with Will Trent? I am hooked on Will Trent and want to explore more!

Not even on their honeymoon can Will and Sara take it easy. Despite keeping a low profile, they are soon pulled into a murder case when a woman is found murdered with plenty of suspects.

I love the Will Trent series, and I was eagerly waiting to read This Is Why We Lied. It's a good book with plenty of nasty people who could easily be the killer. However, I found the pacing a bit slow sometimes; too many times, I felt that I lost a bit of interest in the story.

This Is Why We Lied is a good book, just not one of the best in the series.

Immediate drama! After reading a lot of cosy books recently (my choice) I do love to come back to a good crime book and this one does not disappoint. Thoroughly enjoyed it and love everything from this author.

Ok so confession time. I have not read all the books in the Will Trent series so maybe I’m not as invested in Will and Sara as anyone else writing a review. And yes I did struggle to totally understand the dynamics of their relationship. But I totally get why Will chose where he did for their honeymoon all be it a bit selfishly. But then I’m guessing that’s what makes them such a special couple to you all.
Will and Sara are honeymooning in the middle of nowhere when tragedy strikes.
The McCalpines are one of a kind family each carrying their own demons. So no wonder it becomes so hard to work out the dynamics and where to turn next. The mountains provide a beautiful but extremely difficult setting to work in but Will, Sara and Faith hold their own.
Excellent writing and a real page turner. Shocks and twists along the way make this story a definite one of a kind.

Who killed Mercy McAlpine?

All Will and Sara want is to escape from everything and enjoy their honeymoon. They book a secluded cabin and plan to relax and enjoy each others company. But when a body is discovered and a storm leaves them stranded at the complex they have to put all their skills to the test to see who is lying and why.

A great book which I really enjoyed. Immersive setting and I loved being back with these characters for a while. Thanks @netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. An author that rarely disappoints for me.

A twisty and fast paced closed circle thriller. There's a lot of secrets, there's a limited number of suspects and a couple of investigators on their honeymoon.
Will and Sarah are the MCs in this series and this is a very good one and kept surprising me till the last twist
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This is the latest instalment of the Sara Linton/Will Trent storyline. We see them newly married (at last!) and on their honeymoon at a very remote and beautiful mountain lodge, the McAlpine lodge. It is far from the stress of their GBI jobs in Atlanta, and Will has planned that it will be a few days of pure relaxation. This relaxation doesn’t last long when Mercy, daughter of the McAlpines blows up at dinner on the first night, and publicly declares that she will expose all the secrets and lies that the family has been hiding. Later that evening, when out for a late night swim in the lake, Will and Sara hear a commotion, and when they arrive, find Mercy, terribly injured. There is nothing Sara can do to save her. Their honeymoon has become a crime scene and murder investigation. Being so remote and cut off suddenly by bad weather, they have no back up, and no resources, so they have to rely on one another and their skills to try and figure out who did it.

Mercy’s public declaration means that nearly every family member had a motive, every staff member had motive and all of the guests seem to be hiding something. Nearly everyone had an opportunity. As they peel back the layers, secrets, lies and illegal activities are unveiled. All lead them closer to finding Mercy’s killer. They can’t forget for a moment that they are trapped on a mountain with a murder who could strike again at any moment.

This book had so many twists, that it was really hard to guess who the killer was. You would think you had it figured out and then something else would be unveiled and you would be off on another tangent. The way it was written, jumping back on the timeline to give character insights worked well, giving us context and building up more drama and tension between characters. Overall, a very exciting read, and we get more back story on our favourite characters too. Plenty of drama, tension, excitement, one you will struggle to put down once you start!

*I received this book for review from NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.

Absolute cracking book but then it's a Karin Slaughter novel so of course it is! She is the absolute master of creating an evocative backdrop for a story and This Is Why We Lied absolute fulfills this brief.

This, the 12th in the Will Trent series, sees Will and Sara on honeymoon at the secluded McAlpine Lodge retreat. Time for some rest, relaxation and to switch off from all things GBI, police, death and being on duty. Except that of course they can't because that wouldn't be much of a book now would it!

Poor sweet Mercy McAlpine, my heart broke for her. She's the down trodden, relentlessly hardworking and under appreciated manager of the Lodge, and when she is brutally murdered and Will and Sara find themselves slap bang in the middle of the crime scene and surrounded by potential suspects, all sense of a honeymoon is left behind as they do their best to control the scene before help can arrive.

This book is perfectly paced, delivers a delicious sense of unease and offers up a plethora of potential scenarios, suspects and a whole family of characters that you'll love to hate.

I was completely engrossed - my thanks to the author, NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for an ARC in return for an honest review.

This Is Why We Lie by Karin Slaughter is a gripping thriller dealing with secrets, betrayal, and human relationships. I've received a copy from Harper Collins UK via Netgalley.

Slaughter's writing immerses us in the emotional turmoil of the main characters, Will and Sara. The plot unfolds with brilliantly timed twists, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Each character is well-developed, with their own motivations and flaws, making their struggles so much more real. Trust and deception are central to the this story and the combination of suspense with psychological depth makes this book a must read. To know more about this book, you should definitely read it yourselves.

Overall, if you're into psychological thrillers, you won't be disappointed with this one.

5/5⭐️

I didnt enjoy this book very much.
It was very long and thr story line was distressing at many points.
It's a story of a very broken family who own a business catering for tourists in the mountains.
When one of the main characters is brutally murdered, 2 of the guests are involved in working out who killed her.
Not for me

Wow! I am a fan of Karin Slaughter anyway but I think this is my favourite yet. It is tough read but so well written. The story talks of generational abuse and the impact of trauma on children and adults. It is so brilliantly written I cannot commend it highly enough.

That said you will need resilience to get through parts of it.

The characters are effective, the plot is gripping and twisty and the overarching theme are brilliantly executed.

Highly recommended

Will Trent and Sara Linton are on their honeymoon. As a surprise, Will has picked the small and remote mountain resort that he longed to go to during his days in the children’s home. There is privacy in the cabin, swimming in the lake and hiking on the many trails in the area. Meals are served family style in the McAlpine family home. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? What is underneath the surface here is dark, disturbing and evil. That’s exactly what to expect from the talented Karin Slaughter.

We know from the first pages that Mercy McAlpine has been murdered. There are many suspects.Mercy herself believes that everyone on the mountain wants her dead. Isolated even more by a storm that has cut access to the resort, Will and Sara reveal their professional identities, identities they had kept hidden to avoid notoriety. As they slowly work toward identifying the killer, another body is found. A deception is uncovered but the real horror is saved for the final pages.

This is Why We Lied is a taut, smartly plotted thriller with a sad, twisted conclusion. Karin Slaughter makes you care about her characters, especially Will, Sara, Faith and Amanda. Her gift is to make you care about the unlikeable ones. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK and Karin Slaughter for this ARC.
