I really enjoyed this audiobook! It was a quick and easy read that kept me wanting to find out how it all tied together. I will definitely read more book by this author.
Thank you for this ARC!
When I first started listening to the girl on the news it didn’t grab me but I stuck with it and it turned out to be a good story, my only Nigel was the parts where the journalist was interviewing Rosie, all the initial reading to denote who was talking got a bit irritating, but the narrator Zoe Mills did a great job at keeping the pace of the story.
Rosie is only 12 years old when she is convicted of killing her best friend. Sadie, a reporter, is the only one that stands up for Rosie’s innocence. Now 25 years later, Rosie has a new identity and family, and is distraught when social media falsely reports her daughter, Mia. Who would do such a cruel thing. Sadie has been investigating similar murders, and has narrowed the real killer down to 2 people very close to Rosie.
A really gripping thriller, that builds up suspense and intrigue. A cleverly written plot and you really warm to Rosie’s character and wish her the happy ever ending she deserves. A first class read.
I had passed this up initially based on the title. It evoked a type of story I didn’t want to read. However I was very wrong. The story wasn’t what I was expecting and I’m thankful another friend on GR reviewed it.
I found this story hard to put down. The pacing was solid, the reveals and twists came early and continued throughout. I loved that.
Most importantly there were no long winded confessionals or maniacal characters or some attempt at a 13th hour twist. I also liked the MC and the narrator did a terrific job.
I somewhat rolled my eyes about her husband being in debt with sharks. This is overdone and we are all so tired of the scenario
I enjoyed this book. It was a bit of a slow burn at the beginning, but it did pick up. I listened to the audiobook and I think I would have enjoyed it more reading the book. The switching between characters was confusing at first but as the story developed it became easier to follow. So this is about a woman who was accused of killing her childhood friend and spent time locked up for seven years because of it. There was a journalist that would talk to her during this time and did not believe the girl killed her friend. She gets out and starts rebuilding her life. The journalist continues to look into who really killed the girl. The ending had some surprising twists.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC.
The Girl on the News is a new thrilling psychological page-turner by Elisabeth Carpenter. Her protagonist has many names, after surviving a horrific tragedy as a teen.
There are so many twists and turns in the plot that it is difficult to review this book without accidentally giving away some of them by giving away names or plot devices used. That being said, the protagonist has had to overcome so much based on the assumptions of others, and lack of evidence in other arenas.
When her own family is put in danger by strange events and then the ultimate unthinkable event, the protagonist leans on the kindness of near-strangers and those who have always proven their loyalty and kindness throughout her life.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this audio ARC!!! It was Amazing!!
The Girl on The News (Audiobook) by Elisabeth Carpenter
I loved this Audiobook!
I was hooked from the very first chapter and could not wait to find out what happens. This book was fast paced and I loved the ending!
The narrator, Zoe Mills, was wonderful the way she made every character have a different voice and persona.
I love Elisabeth Carpenter books they are all edge on your seat thrillers.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture Audio for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review
I listened to this on audiobook.
Well this was one intense rollercoaster of a ride, there was lots going on and majority of it very fast paced too. Plenty of characters to get to know and figure out, working out who to trust and who is lying or hiding the truth.
I really enjoyed the story, was really well written I thought and flowed well. At the beginning, there were a few chapters with different characters, where you are trying to figure out how this fits within the story or what relevance it’ll have. But once it all starts connecting together, it’s like a light bulb moment going off and it all comes together nicely.
There was a little twist at the end with regards to a certain character which I wasn’t expecting.
So another great story from this author, of whom I have read some of her previous books.
As for the narrator Zoe Mills, she was a newbie to me, but I thought she did a really good job of giving each of the characters their own individual voice and it all flowed nicely from one character to the next. Zoe definitely did a great job of telling the story. I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to a future audiobook where she is the narrator.
Huge thanks to NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this a lot in the beginning- I got sucked right in but then it got slow and seemed to drag and then the ending felt rushed to me. Still it was a good book but it could have been better. I enjoyed the ending and will try this author again!
Thank you netgalley for my arc of this audiobook for an honest opinion
I found this book slow during the middle, but it had me compelled to find out who was guilty whether it was Rosie of not. Nice twist though and although I should of clocked I didn’t
Nice little listen/ read
Good mystery thriller
⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Girl on the News by Elisabeth Carpenter, an audiobook narrated by Zoe Mills is a heart-pounding psychological thriller that will make you guess what is happening.
I enjoyed this book, I enjoyed the storyline but the ending felt a little bit too rushed. There was potential for a jaw-dropping end twist but it didn't happen.
This book is about an unfair justice system, damaged lives, and broken hearts. This is a book about every parent's worst nightmare.
Rosie has been convicted for her best friend's murder that she swears she didn't commit. No one believes her until someone does, but it's too late.
Jess and her husband Mark have a perfect life until Mark asks to borrow 10k due to a bad investment. Jess feels that she can't feel secure in her house so she decides to visit her mother to keep her daughter safe. Is her daughter in danger or someone is playing a cruel joke? Does someone know Jess's secret?

4.8 ⭐️ My heart pounded through this book and I literally read it in one day - it was just so gripping
When Rosie, aged 12 is found guilty of murdering her bff, only journalist Sadie believes in her innocence
I judged this was going to be a run of the mill missing child suspense, but the characters were so full of heart and depth I got swept up in the drama and mysteries
The multi layered timelines were intriguing, but not confusing at all. I guessed there would be some early twists and reveals - and there were which I loved - give me a fast paced thriller every time!
I loved that the majority of the focus was on the women, I felt very attached to them and had a lot of respect for them all - even the ones I didn’t like! I even shed a tear - it was so beautiful
I would have liked to have understood the men a bit better, which leads me to why this isn’t a 5 ⭐️
Half way in, I knew it would come down to whodunnit and the reveal - sadly, for me it didn’t live up to expectations and fell a little flat. It was fully resolved which I liked, but too quickly. I would have liked more explanation and final moments with the full cast of characters, because they were so beloved
Nevertheless, this is my favorite January 2024 read and I’ll definitely be reading author Libby Carpenters other 6 thrillers
I listened to this in in one sitting. I suggest to not read the description because it gives almost everything away. Go in blind. There are lots of twists and turns in here. I loved it.
Many thanks to the publisher, Bookouture Audio, and Net Galley for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is about a girl it is supposedly kidnapped and the news story that goes with it it in the mystery and well written and easy to follow it takes a few twists and turns and intriguing I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Mysteries
WHAT A THRILLER!!!
I haven't read something in so long that had me on the edge of my seat!
I loved getting to the end to see how ALL of the characters intertwined!!!
This story follows
Rosie, who as a child was wrongfully convicted of her best friends', Lauren, murder.
Heather, Laurens mother, who found Rosie next to Heather's body.
Sadie, a journalist, who is Heather's sister, and the only one who ever gave Rosie a chance.
Now 30 years later, Rosie must find the killer before it is too late for her own daughter!
An interesting take on the classic who-dun-it genre where a convicted murder has to solve her daughters would-be-crime. A short book that is well paced and with just enough clues to keep you guessing.
I had the audiobook version of this one and I think maybe reading it would have been better because I felt confused the entire time. There are so many characters and at some parts a transcript (or something) is being written and it just has initials. It’s felt too choppy and never really flowed for me either.
2.5⭐️
The Girl on the News is about a mother whose daughter is falsely reported missing via social media. She now must keep her daughter safe while also keeping her dark past a secret.
I was immediately drawn to the premise of this book. The idea of an anonymous Facebook post essentially destroying everything you have built is very relatable.
I thought the book was well written and the audio narrator was good. There was a nice pace from chapter to chapter as it switched from past to present.
I do think the ending felt a little rushed. I wish we were given a bit more there.
My Rating: 3.75
I received an uncorrected advance review copy of the audiobook The Girl on the News by Elizabeth Carpenter, narrated by Zoe Mills, from NetGalley and Bookouture Audio in exchange for feedback. Thank you!
I requested this book primarily because of how interesting the plot description sounded, and I’m glad I was able to read it! The audiobook is about 7 hours long, and I listened to it all in one day. Mills did a fantastic job on the narration!
I really enjoyed the variety of POVS throughout the story and found the characters interesting and complex. While some of the plot twists were fairly guessable, others kept me questioning until the very end.
I did find the ending to be a bit rushed- I would have enjoyed more details on the reveal at the end and more insight on some characters’ motives. (SPOILERS: Why did Mark marry Jessie? Did Billy commit the murders on his own? What were Liza’s intentions when establishing context with Jessie? I understand the appeal of an open-ended conclusion to the story, but I think that could have been done while answering some of these questions.)
Overall this book was just what I want in a thriller: a mystery to be solved, intriguing narration, and plenty of suspense. I would recommend it to fans of authors such as Katherine Faulkner, Freida McFadden, and Lisa Jewell.
I was really interested in the storyline of thos book but I'm afraid the narrator threw me off too much. For some reason she did a sharp intake of breath after every sentence and it was so distracting and off putting that it ruined the experience of listening to the actual book.
