4.5* All the Colours of the Dark - Chris Whitaker. Wow. Just Wow. This book has utterly grabbed me and I'll be thinking about it for a long time.
The story of Patch and Saint told over many decades. From their relatively poor up-bringings in a pretty and moneyed small town, to Patch performing a heroic deed which will change both of their lives forever.
This is a beautifully written book. It took me a little bit to get into the swing of the prose and the rhythm of the characters and the plot but once I was in, I was in hard. It's difficult to say too much without giving things away and this is one where surprise is the reader's friend. It is possibly literary crime fiction, it is a coming of age story, it is sometimes thrilling and other times meandering. However, it is always compelling. Each of the wider cast of characters brings a huge amount to the story, along with a sense of place and a struggle for belonging.
My one word of caution, this is a book for when you have the time to read it. I suspect it wouldn't have the same impact if you try to read a couple of pages a night ... it has a need for an immersive experience.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC. Hugely recommended.
This is my first book by Chris Wihitaker but reading the reveiws on it very much drew me to it and it sounded just up my street.
I found it to be more of a love story and a missing person story than a thriller but it is very beautifully written even though I did find it a bit of a slow burn in some parts , it is very dark in parts too but also very emotional and you actually feel Patch’s pain and absolute drive and determination throughout the book. I felt so much for Saint too, her devotion is relentless. It is very character based and I like this in a book, where you get very invested in them.
I will definitely be looking to read more of Chris’s novels in future and highly recommend this one. Thank you so much to the publisher and Netgalley for this early copy.
All The Colour’s of the Dark is a wonderful at times heartbreaking story that spans 30 years.
When Patch a young boy is abducted and injured he is kept in complete darkness, after days of this he is joined by Grace who tends his wound and keeps him alive. With stories of her life, places she has seen, visited and read about she brings light and colour to the dark incarceration. After almost a year and with Patch’s best friend Saint never giving up hope he is found but Grace has disappeared.
From that moment Patch has drastically changed and the next 30 years cover his quest to find Grace, with Saint determined to help the friend she loves she becomes an FBI agent.
With a cast of characters ranging from the mainly good to the downright diabolical you are kept continually questioning motives and actions.
Beautifully told, a sad tale though also uplifting. The reveals at the end are a surprising and shocking as you expect after taking this journey with them.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
This is a heart breaking story with well written characters but it is spoilt by the profuse use of very bad language.
We Begin At The End has been my favourite book for several years now, not much has come close, so I was very excited to be approved for this.
I knew that it was going to be beautifully written, I knew there were going to be characters that would get under my skin, but the more I read, the more I couldn't put it down. A slow-burn in the best possible way spanning years with these wonderful characters, (If any author was going to create characters to rival Duchess and Walk in my heart, it was going to be this one, and it was going to be Patch and Saint ❤️) encompassing several genres and weaving the most intricate tale that came together so beautifully I am not sure I breathed during the final 10-15%.
I am so happy I got this early copy and I am so happy that I get to recommend it to people, then read it again with them. Can't recommend this book enough 🥰
In the small town of Monta Clare, girls are disappearing. Patch, an unlikely hero, emerges. The story is a missing person mystery, a love story and a quest for truths.
This is my first book by this author and I knew I had to read with all the amazing reviews this book, as well as previous novels, have been getting. This was a slow burn, epic novel, with a lot of heart at its centre. At times it is bleak and other times inspiring. The author has a poetic style of writing and it is very compelling. The story explores many dark themes and brings out a host of emotions.
I can definitely appreciate that this was a beautifully written story. For me personally it was slightly too long, dragging in the middle and I would say it is more a coming of age, character driven drama than thriller. However, after reading and seeing reviews, I can definitely see that this will be a massive hit! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
This is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. It broke my heart over and over, and I completely adored it. Beautiful quoteworthy writing that made me pause just to savour the wording and an immersive love story with visceral characters that took my breath away. It has to be THE thriller of 2024
Love Chris Whitaker and all of his books and this one is no different. Absolutely brilliant storyteller!
All the Colours of the Dark is a book I've been looking forward to for a long time. I'm so glad to say that it delivers on every level. It's been a while since I've read something this gripping.
I didn’t think anyone could write a heroine as heartbreakingly wonderful as Duchess in We Begin at the End - but Chris Whitaker has done it again. Such a beautifully written book about the lifelong impact of a crime on two childhood friends in a small rural community. Loved it.
One of the most incredible books I have ever read, and one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. A deep, dark and devastating masterpiece from one of the finest writers alive today; this is everything that crime fiction is capable of and more.
There are no words that I can write that will do this extraordinary novel justice.
The characters will live with me for the rest of my life.
An absolute masterpiece.
Chris Whitaker is one of those authors who you never know what is going to come out of his head but when it does, you're blown away. This is very special and very well written and imagined. A bitter sweet story of love/crime and wonderful vivid characters.
Oh my word. What a book. I finished this earlier today and I've felt bereft ever since.
It's a sweeping epic - part crime fiction, part love story - but far more than that.
This is a genuine modern classic, up there with the very best.
The two central characters, Patch and Saint, are so well drawn, you can't help but love and root for them both.
Readers are going to gobble this up and want to shout about it from the rooftops.
It's honestly the best novel I've read in ages.
I loved Whitaker's award-winning last book, We Begin at the End, and wondered if this would be able to match it.
In fact, it surpasses it in almost every way.
An incredible achievement.
I don’t think I’ll read a better book this year, it’s as simple as that. Within hours of finishing this digital proof I pre-ordered the hardback! This is a beautifully written novel with unforgettable characters that totally swept me away. At just short of 600 pages this is not a quick read, and not one you can skim at all, not that you’d want to.
Patch and Saint are the closest of friends. They are still children when we meet them. Patch, known as such because he wears a patch where one eye should be, lives with his widowed struggling mother who is more likely to be asleep than paying any attention to him. Saint lives with her grandmother and is into wildlife and keeping bees. Neither of them are welcomed by the rest of tell town children but they have each other. A truly solid friendship.
And then their world is shaken forever when Patch foils a kidnapping of a young girl in their town but is captured himself. And he finds himself kept in the dark, injured and alone, at the mercy of his captor. Whilst Saint energises the whole town to try and find him, Patch is alone for days until a girl, Grace, joins him. And in the dark, trying to find a way to survive the hell he is in, she is there with him.
In the outside world Saint is relentless in her search for her best friend, and after many months there is a breakthrough which leads to Patch’s escape. But in escaping he loses Grace. And so begins the quest of his life to find the girl that saved him in his darkest times.
And then the story really begins.
A wonderful book. Twists and turns throughout. I could not have loved it more.
My reviews are normally long and detailed. This one isn't.
This is, quite simply, the best book I've read in years. It's a powerful novel which defies genre. Beautifully written about horrible things and the lifelong effect it has on all those involved.
Stunning.
I absolutely loved this book. It needs to be talked about widely and it needs to become a huge bestseller like Where the Crawdads sing.
It’s beautifully written with heart and insight. If you have read this authors previous book We Begin at the End you will know the style, and this is written in the same vein. Small American town with a collection of wonderful characters. Saint is somewhat of a misfit, keeping to herself. She lives with her Grandmother, who drives the school bus and is talked about as being a dyke because of her short hair and cigar smoking amongst other things. Patch is also a misfit. He only has one eye, a mother lost to drink, and has taken to dressing like a pirate with his eyepatch and hat. These two misfits kids become friends, with Patch often at Saints where he is fed and has an eye kept out for him. Life changes for everyone when Patch saves a local girl from a would be abduction, in the process he is wounded and abducted himself..
So the story really starts, when every avenue leads nowhere, Saint keeps looking for her friend. It’s such a beautiful story with many twists, colourful characters and a whole lot of heart. Covering some 30 years, I kept checking the page count because I did not want this book to end.
