Emily Henry does it again with a superb set of characters that just own your heart and a witty and heartfelt writing style that you can't look away from.
This story will leave you feeling like you have been through the wringer! I love Daphne and resonate so much with many of her feelings.
Daphne’s world falls apart when her fiancé breaks up with her…and this sets off a rollercoaster of events. Daphne doesn’t like surprises but somehow she learns to be open to new experiences.
I real rollercoaster of a ride to find out what Daphne’s new life will look like and who will be part of it.
I loved it.
Ooh yes, another cracking book from Emily. I have enjoyed all her previous books and this one doesn't disappoint. Loved the characters, who were well described and really liked the way she story built. Swoonworthy!
This is an Emily Henry title, so course it could be nothing less than a 5-star read.
As many others have pointed out, Funny Story feels much more like a traditional rom com than Henry's previous novel, Happy Place. We follow librarian, Daphne, after her fiancée, Peter, leaves her for his childhood best friend, Petra. Left with little choice, Daphne ends up housemates with the man Petra left to be with Peter, the Nick Miller-esque, Miles. Like every Henry hero, there's much more to Miles than meets the eye and soon enough sparks are flying between the roomies.
While Funny Story didn't resonate quite as emotionally as Beach Read or Happy Place, it did have much more serious themes than expected. This made for a lovely balance in storytelling as it has the reader laughing crying one minute and genuinely sobbing the next. I personally didn't find Daphne as relatable as some of Henry's past heroines, but I know she will resonate strongly with many people who have lost themselves in a relationship before.
I absolutely love that Henry explores different romance tropes in each other novels, this one utilising fake-dating (arguably one of the better tropes) to put these characters in awkward and slightly sticky situations with each other and their respective ex's. It makes each of her works distinct and memorable in their own ways.
Current Emily Henry ranking:
1. Book Lovers (5 stars)
2. Happy Place (5 stars)
3. You and Me on Vacation (5 stars)
4. Funny Story (5 stars)
5. Beach Read (4 stars)
I absolutely cannot wait for whatever Emily Henry does next!
Emily Henry is always the best choice of summer!
This book is giving me "Something Blue" vibes. We have two couple, their split and ... mixed it?
Peter is now with Pedra and Daphne... end up living with Miles.
First, as a roommate, obviously, but then...
Witty, funny (!), cuuuute romanse to just dive in!
Love has so many ways and it is so upbringing to read how relationships are formed and how they discover affections towards each other.
Masterpiece
This book was great! Emily Henry always delivers. It took me a while to get to this on my TBR list however when I did I whizzed through it.
Emily Henry is fast becoming a scion of contemporary romance, and Funny Story cements her position. A relatable, funny and easy to read romance that has you routing for both characters. Thanks for the reading copy!
Emily Henry never disappoints! Every one of her books is well-written and you can see that she puts a lot of time and attention into it, and Funny Story is just as amazing as the author's previous books!
Daphne and Miles become roommates after their partners leave Daphne and Miles for each other! Daphne has lost her home, her friends and her perfect fiancé, and all she has left is counting down the days until she can move out of the city where her heart was broken. Miles is determined to show her that Waning Buy can be beautiful even without her fiancé.
Funny Story is an amazing love story about how you can find happiness even at the worst time of your life. Although Daphne and Miles are completely different they are an example that opposites attract! Their chemistry from the beginning of the book simply knocks you off your feet, and their adventures while exploring the city made me smile! Plus, Daphne is a librarian, which makes my little heart rejoice. Miles is absolutely fantastic - every time he did something cute it made me smile at the book. I need a guy like him in my life!
And, the supporting characters are just as amazing as the main characters! I love the friendship between Daphne and Ashleigh - it just goes to show that friends can be found at any stage of life. And Julia, Miles' sister, is chaotic and hilarious!
I definitely recommend it!
Emily Henry books are such a joy and this was no exception. Compared to some of her others I took a little longer to warm to the characters in this, but by the end I was fully invested in their love story. And as always with Emily Henry, the cast of supporting characters were such a joy that I'd happily keep reading about them just living their everyday lives. A perfect summer romance.
Sadly I didn't really think this was close to Emily Henry's best. I loved Beach Read and Book Lovers so much, but this one was just a bit 3 star for me. If I'd had to guess who it was written by, I don't think I'd have been able to. I did like the friendships, but the romance didn't really do it for me. There were some time jumps that skipped out relationship development and there was way too much about the library to the point that I was getting bored with that whole storyline. The MMC seemed more interested in his ex throughout than in our MFC and every single character seemed to have at least one serious issue with family/relationships that it just felt like it bogged the whole thing down. I do seem to be in the minority though! 3.5 stars from me.
10/10, another great summer read from Emily Henry! perfect for existing fans and as an entry point into the genre!
I loved this book, easy 5*! I adored the relationship between Daphne and Miles, and particularly enjoyed that they seemed to be rounded characters rather than one dimensional.
I would have liked to see more of Miles' family situation discussed with him and his sister, but I adored the found family with Ashleigh and the poker group.
Highly recommend this one, best Emily Henry so far.
A great Emily Henry novel, but doesn't surpass my favourite Happy Place.
Henry writes wonderful characters, with strong emotions and a gripping plot and I know I'll enjoy it. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Daphne always loved the way Peter told their story. Until it became the prologue to his actual love story with his childhood bestie, Petra. Daphne ended up rooming with her total opposite and the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra's ex, Miles. One night, they formed a plan to deliberately mislead people by posting their adventures together. But it was all just for show, right?
As with her previous books, I was nervous getting into this one because most of Emily Henry’s past books were 5-star reads for me. So after closing the final page, I’m glad to say that this again managed to win my heart! This had the right balance of quirks and sweetness. And the banters were first class, as always! The title and the super cute cover design packaged the entire book perfectly for me, with cherry on top.
I loved how this book started with the two main characters seeing each other at their worsts. The plot grabbed my attention from the first page and I was fully invested throughout. IMHO, Miles was the Cinderella in this relationship, as he transformed from the mopey, grubby, bonghead version into the independent, strong and kind person he was.
I also loved how Daphne and Miles didn’t need to change themselves to fit into each other’s expectations. They were just perfect for each other, and it was so fun to watch their chemistry grew organically through their interactions.
I couldn’t fault anything in this book, and this has now become my favourite Emily Henry book to date (I have read her entire backlist).
I.LOVED.MILES.
I adored Miles as a love interest, the disheveled guy who actually has his life pretty well together.
Emily Henry honestly never lets me down.
I don't think Emily Henry can write a book that will make laugh and have a good time. I think they're multilayered because you've got romance, fun but also the a lot of witty and sharp social remarks.
This one is another excellent novel that I couldn't put down. I'm a bit late to the review party but I was enjoying this story and had to read slow as I wanted to have fun for longer.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I received an advanced copy of beloved romance author Emily Henry’s soon-to-be-released Funny Story and devoured the whole thing in one delightful afternoon. Another one from the master: Earnest, funny, sexy, messy, and deeply relatable.
It had all the classic “will they/won’t they” tension of your favorite comfort TV show (actually now that I think about it, love interest Miles looked a lot like Nick Miller from New Girl in my mind’s eye) along with dialogue that actually made me laugh out loud more than once.
But what really surprised me was how this book dug deep into the characters’ pasts to inform their present emotional motivations, love languages, and even attachment styles in a way that felt open, honest, and realistically feasible for people in IRL relationships to do, too. I found myself rooting for both Daphne and Miles—not just together as a couple but as individuals—to find their happy endings.
Emily Henry is one of my favourite authors and whilst this wasn’t the best book she’s written in my opinion, it was still a great read. I feel like it was really well written as the relationship between Miles and Daphne felt really genuine. I loved learning more about Daphne’s family and there was an appropriate amount of steaminess too!
I have gathered my thoughts, and have finally come to accept that Emily Henry’s latest offering, Funny Story, was an average read at best.
I must preface that going into this, I thought it would rise to the top of my Em Hen rankings as the majority were saying it’s the most romance she’s ever put in a novel—and I thought so for the first 40%. But to my surprise it quickly made its way to the bottom, and to be completely honest it was a struggle to finish.
To be fair to Emily, most romance books decrease in quality after the love interests get together, but this one skyrocketed into my future grave. There was a nagging lack of belief that Miles and Daphne actually liked each other, and it got so absurd where Goodreads user ‘ii’s’ review, ‘the colleenhooverification of emily henry’ has substantial merit.
Not to mention, the third act breakup was one of the worst things I’ve ever read, mans literally left Daphne out in the freezing cold rain. I fear the resolution to said conflict became even more unbelievable, and I truly believe Emily failed the one thing she is actually good at—curating a deep emotional and believable romantic connection.
Now steering away from being a negative Nancy, I do have to give Emily credit for Funny Story in the sense that this felt like her writing at the most confident. Although maybe she should be a little less confident …
Another fabulous read from Emily Henry! The ending was quite predictable from very early on, but the journey to it was far from predictable. In fact, at just after about half way, I had no idea what to expect - everything looked like a done deal, but it was a long way from being resolved.
The characters are wonderful. As a librarian myself, I recognised so many of my traits in Daphne and I totally empathised with her situation. Miles is like a garden bulb - planted deep and taking a long time to show his true colours - but what a wait! He was such a great character and so complex with all sorts of unexpected secrets. He was flawed but had good reason, yet so thoughtful and adventurous and loved by all.
Petra and Peter are well-deserving of each other; I think that Miles and Daphne had lucky escapes.
I chuckled my way through this and enjoyed every page. It is thoughtful and humorous and very, very cleverly planned! Don't miss this read!
