This audio deals with the effects of a teue crime documentary maker who reyurns to her home town after a teenager dies. She is determined to redeem herself and keep a derp dark secret.
The narration was brill. As the story emerged it became more interesting as the past and the present collide. The narrator portrayed all the emotion of the characters and the pov gave insight. I did gueese the original murderer correctly but the other secret teveal was a fantastic twist. A good listen but it took a while to get going. A solid 4 star listen. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator.

I enjoyed this one a lot and found myself listening for longer than I should have been. There were multiple POVs and incidents that occurred over different time periods. The pacing varied throughout, however this was in-keeping with the events in the story. This is one of those stories that surprises you at the end. I thought I had it all worked out, but there were still some surprises. Definitely recommend this to fans of the genre. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers.

Generally a standard type of murder mystery. This being a cold case that Jessie, a film maker, was personally involved with as a young person. Returning to her home town where the murder of her best friend occurred, she seeks to unravel further matters that remain unresolved. She shares how the murder has impacted on her life and how it still haunts her. Essentially when she returns home, like her murdered friend, she ends up in the well, grappling with whether she will survive or succumb to the same miserable ending as her friend Amy..

I listened to the audio version and quite enjoyed the narration by Alix Dunmore, lesser the voice of Ethan Kelly whose voice was a bit severe and brittle for my taste.

The story is delivered mostly at a reasonably steady pace, enabling reveals and some red herrings along the way. Its pace does slow down at times and did feel a little drawn out. Jessie albeit decent enough was a little self serving, so I never felt like I completely liked her. I am not sure what I gained from the documentary excerpts between chapters, but these were short and sweet. It was useful to have present time and then go back in time to understand what transpired during past events, as it helped bring the mystery to life. There were some twists along the way but no major surprises. It wasn't as good as Don't Close Your Eyes for me, but offered a decent mystery contemporary thriller.

Enjoyed this - listened to the audiobook version.
There were 2 or 3 narrators, this worked well for the story and brought it more to life. It's the first audiobook I've listened to with multiple narrators.

The story itself was good, didn't expect the ending with Jessie - expected it somehow with Martin.
Kept my interest and good characters.

Jessie returns to her hometown to help find some answers after her friend, Amy’s murder 15 years ago. She is attacked and wakes up at the bottom of a well, that she knows all too well. Her phone rings to find a 999 dispatcher trying to reassure her help is on the way after their previous call cut off. Jessie doesn’t remember dialling 999. Help doesn’t come, but the dispatcher won’t let her call off. Time is running out as the water level rises.
An interesting plot and potential to be a great psychological thriller, but so many things screamed out as unrealistic as the plot went on. Jessie’s naivety really grated on me and saw the twist coming from the outset. A good read, but lots of plot improvement recommended.

Despite arduous circumstances, Jessie returns to her childhood hometown (often a terrible idea, in my humble opinion) after a child is murdered, his body is found at the bottom of a well. The same well where Jessie's best friend was killed fifteen years ago.

I enjoyed this thoroughly. It didn't drag along as so many books seem to these days, and held my interest with jumps between now and the past to fill in the gaps. Twisty and atmospheric, I had an inkling about who the baddie was (one of them, at least) but the ending was still a bit of a surprise. .

An interesting and important thread of bullying and the repercussions of it play a central theme, bringing home just how awful it is, for both the bully and the victim. It also shows just how ignorant and base crowds of people can be, how the herd mentality kicks in and any level of common sense disappears. All in all a solid read.

This story had so many twists my head was spinning. I loved the fast pace and style of writing. Although I did guess the final twist it didn’t take anything away from the story. Great narration and an enjoyable listen.

An interesting plot ruined by so many clues at the beginning of the book that each and every twist and turn becomes predictable.

Blurb

A deadly trap. A ticking clock. How long until she has only one last breath?

Jessie wakes to darkness, cold, and the rain beating down on her. She reaches out, and her hands meet hard stone.

Suddenly she knows where she is. Deep in the woods, far underground, at the bottom of the well where her best friend's lifeless body was found fifteen years ago. After returning to her hometown to investigate a new murder, she now finds herself poised to become the killer's next victim.

Jessie gazes up to the circle of night sky above her, the relentless raindrops landing on her face.

She doesn't know how she came to be here, but she knows that, with the storm getting worse, it's only a matter of time before the well begins to fill with water. Can she make it out before it's too late? And what will be waiting for her on the surface if she does?

My Opinion

This book is full of twists, but I did see one of the big reveals coming. Told with multiple viewpoints in multiple timelines, this thriller will have you guessing until the very end. This book was one that I had originally dismissed, but I am so glad I changed my mind. A real rollercoaster of a plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

Rating 4/5

Another great ride. I am on a roll. This one is terrifying in that you feel like you are the one suffering. There are twists. They are good twists, but I think the first was a little obvious. I had guessed it anyway and it drove me mad that Jessie hadn't. The second blew me away. A really good read

One Last Breath by PS Cunliffe. 11 hours and 29 minutes of twists and turns.

The book opens with Jessie who is stuck down a well in the middle of a massive storm. We then go back 5 days to when she and her young daughter, Freya, are driving back to her hometown of Westhaven.

Jessie is a documentary filmmaker and is the brains behind ‘Born Killer’ the documentary which investigated Amy's murder.

15 Years earlier Amy, Jessie's best friend, was found dead in a well. Jessie never thought they caught the right murderer and she was intent on getting to the truth. They managed to get the wrongly imprisoned person set free due to new evidence but they never caught the murderer.

Now 15 years later another teen has been found murdered in the same woods close to the well. Jessie has to go and see if she can find any clues as to who did it. The story counts down the days until the time that Jessie ends up in the well and we anxiously wait for someone to come to her rescue. Or is it too late for Jessie?

Every time I thought I knew who the guilty person was, then there would be another twist. A gripping audio book.

Thanks to @netgalley for my ARC 🎧❤️

Three stars from me generally means that I believe the author achieved their aims and it’s a good book but that I personally didn’t fall in love with it.

In this case, the emergency call element was one I simply did not enjoy. Sorry.

Three Word Review: loooooong emergency call

Don’t you just want to grab this, switch off the phone and curl up on the sofa
By far one of my favourite books I've read this year… I loved every minute…
Narrator was fabulous too !

I had the audio version of this and I liked the different narrators for me it really worked and broke the story up. This was especially important as the story was told with flashbacks and multimedia (the screen play). For me this was a great listen and there were so many twists and turns and I wasnt expecting it to go where it went - just loved it.

I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

This is my first book by the author and very glad I requested this !! I loved it , the narration was well done and I was gripped by the story! Will definitely be checking out more by this author. Thanks to netgalley for sending me this audio arc in exchange for my honest review. I would highly recommend this book to any thriller lovers.

This has a brilliant opening, and lots of threads running through, however, the inclusion of some explanatory chapters at the end made it feel like there was a little too much story for the book.

Thank you Netgalley, PS Cuncliffe and Bonnier Uk audio for the Arc of One last breath.

This book had me gripped right from the first word. Starting with a women who is trapped down a well, who after a struggle gets the the top only to be pushed back down again!

The narrative is set mainly in 2 time lines, a few weeks before working up to present day and then the now as the story unfolds. Jessie , I film maker goes back to her hometown as a boy had been found dead in a well in the local woods. Jessie has a connection, it's the same well that she lost her closest friend, Amy. And Jessie made a documentary to try and get to the bottom of her death.

I really loved how this narrative unfolds, giving everyone involved a reason to be a suspect. The main characters are well formed and believable. Giving way to lots of little twists and turns. There is some clever foreshadowing which if you catch on to, you may figure out this mutilayered whodunit. The tension builds right from the beginning so you are literally sitting on the edge of your seat as it becomes a race against time. Will the lady in the well take One last breath before being rescued?

Narrated Alix Dunmore and Ethan. Both do a great good in keeping the tension going within the storyline,
A solid 4.5 rounded to 5

The problem with reading/listening to many of these books, is you start to suspect everyone, and make up reasons for why they are the bad guy.
Often, these turn out to be true, and they did here, but there were some very nice surprises along the way too.
It's really does feel like a race against time for Jessie, and I felt the urgency.
At times I could have yelled when the story cut away to the previous days just at the crucial moment.
Fast paced, tension filled and twisty as anything... very nicely done.

I really enjoyed the audiobook version of One Last Breath by PS Cunliffe, although the Bristolian accent grated on me a bit. I found it quite relaxing listening to an audiobook rather than using my usual kindle version. The plot was engaging, believable and fairly fast paced, I enjoyed the mix of characters used and the ending wasn’t what I thought; but I liked it !!
