The Kill List is the third book in the Inspector Angelica Henley series and another fantastic read by the author and you can read it as a standalone.
The SCU is on a hunt for a serial killer after the man who has been in castrated and accused of killing 5 women 25 years ago was acquitted after some further DNA was found. But was murdered on the same day.
The serial killer seems to have started killing again, as a body is found with the mouth sewn up. But when they untie it, they find a list in their mouth of people have died and going to be next.
We also learn and their personal lives and the effect that working for the Police has a detrimental effect on each SCU team members relationships.
This is a dark tense gripping read, with some red herrings along the way. I enjoyed this for the most part, but for me found the storyline far too long 4 stars from me.

DI Henley is back looking into serial killings supposedly carried out by Andrew Streeter. He’s been in prison for 25 years but suffering from cancer and he wants the task killer to be found. He’s always proclaimed his innocence. There’s also the story about Rhimes, Henley’s old boss who supposedly killed himself, The story is so well put together the pages just keep turning. And the ending wow!! What a cliff hanger. It’s hard to write much about it without giving the story away. But I loved it.

WOW WOW WOW!

Fast paced and addictive. I couldn't put it down until I finished reading it.

The Kill List is an absolute page turner. Dark with plenty of tension.

This is book # 3 of the DI Angelica Henley series, but can be read as a stand alone. Needless to say, I immediately added the books THE BINDING ROOM and THE JIGSAW MAN to my TBR.

Nadine Matheson has an impressive writing style and draws you deeply into the story. DI Henley is a strong, relatable female lead detective and I soon got a hang of her and her team at the Serial Crimes Unit.

A fantastic, well crafted 5 star read and if you love your police procedurals on the grittier and more gruesome end of the spectrum, then this one is definitely for you.

Thank you, @netgalley, @hqstories and @queennads for the advanced reading copy of this book.

Nadine Matherson is now a must buy author for me and I am eagerly awaiting book #4 of this series.

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.

This was just brilliant. The third visit to DI Henley and the team. It was like catching up with old friends. Really fast paced and I couldn't put it down.

Twenty five years ago DCI Rhimes arrested and sent to prison Andrew Streeter AKA the Burier mainly due to the fact his kill list was found in his home.

Fast forward twenty five years and Streeter's conviction is now under review. Is he really innocent and is Rhimes really dirty? As the team try to figure it out The Burier starts a new kill list. While investigations continue into the past and present cases and the team deal with personal problems the twists and turns keep coming. Can't wait for instalment four.

Could be a standalone but the previous books set the scene for the personal relationships. Highly recommended.

I am sorry to say that I didn't really connect with this book. I probably should have read other books in the series, but I struggled with this one.

The Hit List book review

The Hit List by Nadine Matheson

Firstly, my thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and the author Nadine Matheson for the advanced reading copy of this book in return for an honest review!

This book is the 3rd in a series on Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley and the team within the Serial Crimes Unit, London. It can also be read as a standalone but some of the richness and character arcs of those in the team will definitely help appreciate certain aspects of the storyline if you've read the first 2 books.

It covers from the planned release of a 5 times killer from the 1990’s on the basis of apparent corruption within the police investigation team to the present day. Since said officer was the bedrock of the SCU, the team struggle emotionally with the possibility that their boss had been corrupt as well as the difficulty in re-investigating the case from so long ago to determine who the killer could be.

Further deaths follow and the Hit List of potential victims appears to grow.

A superb read! Whether you are already a fan of the series, you enjoy police procedurals into serial killers or you want to read a beautifully written, fast moving suspense thriller with bated breathe throughout, you’ll not want to put this book down.

Five stars!

Another great read in this series. The characters are all really well written and bring something different to the story with their unique personalities. The story itself is intelligent, and multilayered without being confusing. The author also manages to create a perfectly creepy atmosphere to this dark story. Definitely a must read thriller for 2024.

This is the third book in the Inspector Henley series, and it did not disappoint.
Twenty five years previously, a man named Andrew Streeter was arrested for the brutal murders of five people. He always protested that he was innocent, but a list of names of the victims was found at his home and the evidence was damning, so he was convicted and jailed.
DCI Harry Rhimes was the arresting officer, and he is now deceased. Andrew Streeters case is re-opened due to new evidence, and there is talk of an officer investigating who was corrupt, Harry Rhimes names is mentioned.
Harry was Inspector Henleys old boss, she had a high regard for him, and does not want to believe the rumours. As the case is being investigated again it becomes clear that someone in the original investigation made sure Andrew Streeter took the blame. Then, another list of names comes to light, and killings begin again.
I really enjoyed this book, the plot twists and turns to its thrilling conclusion.
5 stars.

Tense, chilling and unnerving.
What happens when it looks like the wrong man was captured for horrific crimes years ago is now getting free to tell his truth .
Policing gone wrong ?
And the real killler still out there ..

Fast paced ,fresh and cleverly written this is great storytelling!

If you’re new to this author then you’re in for a treat. Will have you hooked from the first page .

If you haven't discovered this brilliant series featuring DI Anjelica Henley, then what are you waiting for?!

This is the third book in the series, following on from the excellent 'The Jigsaw Man' and 'The Binding Room'. Of course they're best read in order, but 'The Kill List' would also work as a standalone - there's enough new mystery and anything you need to know about past events is explained.

This book begins with the overturning of a conviction of a wrongly-accused man from 25 years ago. The investigation into the past crimes - crimes which Anjelica was close to as a civilian but not police officer - reveals that the original case was corrupt and handled badly. DI Henley can't believe this as the original investigation was led by her old boss - who has since died and she cannot accept would do wrong. As the case is reopened, Henley and the team have to try to be objective and sift through the evidence on the historical killings. Then a new series of murders begins - and it becomes clear that a new Kill List is being worked through...

I'm not always a fan of the corrupt police officer trope, but Matheson uses it with panache - even when I thought I knew what had happened, there were twists and revelations still to come. Definitely not a cliche in sight.

If you love your police procedurals on the grittier and more gruesome end of the spectrum, these books are definitely recommended for you. Matheson doesn't hold back in detailing the graphic murders, but it's all central to the plot and links the crimes. If you can deal with the gore, you'll be rewarded with a tense, gripping and absolutely first-class police procedural.

Another sure hit from Nadine Matheson!

If you're a fan of crime thrillers it might seem you've read it all before, but Matheson will prove you wrong. Inventive and intelligent, the plot and characters will pull you in and keep you invested in The Kill List - prepare to read in one sitting!

I really enjoyed this book. I have read a previous book in this series, so it was good to reconnect with the characters. 25 years ago DCI Harry Rhimes arrested Andrew Streeter for 5 horrific murders. Now his life sentence has been overturned amid speculation of corruption . Rhimes is now dead so can't answer to any charges, and his team are deeply shocked by the allegations. However, when Streeter and his lawyer are both found dead, the race is on to find the real perpetrator. This is a fast paced story, quite gruesome, and will keep you on the edge of your seat to the end.
Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.

This is the third book in the Inspector Anjelica Henley series and oh my what a terrific read it is. The book can be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the first two books both for the fabulous back stories and also because they are just too good to be missed.
The story is a very gruesome one with the team tasked to look into a cold case featuring a serial killer who buries his victims alive and it MJ brings back some dark and disturbing memories for Henley who teenage friend was one the victims added to that there are additional factors involving police corruption which the whole team are finding difficult to deal with.
It’s a very complex storyline that has some excellent twists and didn’t see that coming moments it kept me gripped throughout and a few time I found myself holding my breath as I realised what’s was going on. Love the backstory also and with the ending hinting at another book to follow and I am thrilled at that.
So a fantastic well crafted 5 star read that I really did enjoy and would happily recommend to all lovers of mystery thriller novels.
My thanks to NetGalley and HQ for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is my first encounter with this author and oh my will I be putting everything Nadine Matheson has written on my wish list!! It's hard to pull off dark and macabre well but the author has definitely achieved it.

The characters are those I'd like to meet again and the serial killer, well, maybe not someone I'd like to meet ever again!

I found the investigation engaging and easy to follow, there is plenty going on and the plot twisted in all the right places. The investigation takes you through the past and present and I enjoyed the personal connection the main character had in both.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to readsuch a great new author.

Absolutely loved this book, I love the fact it carrys on with DI Henley and the team & not a completely new set of detectives, the books just keep getting better and better, the way this ended I can definitely see another book to follow, which I’m already excited for!!

The third book in the series finds Henley and her squad stretched to the limit when a case very personal to her is reopened. A convicted serial killers’ convictions are overturned. Not only that, but Henley’s mentor, Rhimes’, is alleged to be the corrupt officer who framed him. This is personal to the whole team, but they know they have no choice. A really good plot, well written and had me gripped from the start. Although a stand alone read, I’m glad I’d read the previous books. I like the authors writing style, the teams characters are an interesting mix, like you’d get in any team and the relationship between Henley and her boss adds another dynamic to the story. The murders are gruesome and not for everyone, I found it an intense read although one I didn’t want to be reading late into the night, Recommended.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

After finding the first book interesting and entetaining, i've been steadily disappointed with the sequels. This was predictable, boring and i didn't care about the story or the plot. For the third in a series i should feel far more invested in and connected to the characters but it felt like the same recycled personal stories from the previous books.

Could an arrest from the past be a terrible mistake?
Will it rear its ugly head again and haunt those involved?

The Kill List will take you on a twisted journey, where crimes that happened in the mid 1990’s and present day are starting to collide.

The story follows Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley, who in 1995 stumbles upon the body of her missing best friend. She is taken under the wing of Detective Sergeant Harry Rhimes and this is what spurs her into becoming a police officer.

This is my first Nadine Matheson novel. Once I got used to her style of writing I quite enjoyed the ride. The characters are gritty and the story weaves its way to an intense conclusion.

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of Nadine’s work.

I enjoyed this book. Following the serial crime unit. A serial killer who always protested his innocence is given the right to appeal by the high court, cps decide not to reprosecute and then he's murdered.
Criticism of the old boss is made public, loyalties are stretched and reopened cases have to be reinvestigated.
Old and new murders entwined as time is running out for those named on the list
