I only read I, Cosmo recently so I was really happy to be allowed to read this on here (and to be sent a physical copy of this book by Nosy Crow). Did I like it as much? Not sure, it's very different to Cosmo, which took me just a few pages to get into and was very much a story which could be any dog owners life, but having persevered I was not disappointed.

We meet a fox at the beginning. She is not in good health. She has bald patches, she is hungry and alone. But one source of food is Nan the lady who feeds her on the porch but she hasn't been there - but tonight the light is on - but it's not Nan, it's a girl who is wearing Nan's jumper. Who is she? Fox is not eating her food...but as she runs away she realises she can understand what the girl is saying.
When Fox is trapped in a barn by the groundsman and his wife something even stranger happens. Not only that, Fox can hear and see the girl.... and so begins the story of their connection. And we learn of the magic that is within Shadow.

A story of love between creatures that perhaps shouldn't work but does. A story of the magic that helps an island.
A story I took a while to get into but really enjoyed. I loved that Shadow had a love for a bird that was a connection to her lost sister and mother. Oh yes. and for odd shoes! (you have to read it!)

Looking forward to taking it to school.
