I enjoyed reading this story, which starts in 1937 when Sophia, Teresa and their father Thomas are living a happy life in Berlin. But it is already clear that things are changing around them. The nazi regime is changing many lives. It certainly changes theirs drastically, even more during the war. Sophia is a nurse and a nun and she feels the need to help others. She takes risks and finds herself in great dangers. From Berlin to the Ravensbrück camp, to a convent in Germany and back to Berlin, Sophia is determined to supporting those around her. In the rollercoaster of emotions she is going through, her faith keeps being tested and her future life rewritten.

This story can be the story of many during the war and it is written in a way that really keeps the reader’s attention. The characters are interesting and attaching and the story gives a perspective on the situation in Germany in those years.

The audiobook was very clearly and very well narrated, with the right tone and a pleasant style, very appropriate for the story.

A good Danielle Steele.

I know that Danielle Steele is a multi million selling author but I’ve never read one of her books. To be fair, I’ve tended to disregard her titles in the belief that they’re slushy romance and the stories wouldn’t appeal to me. I spotted this audio title and liked the war setting and blurb, so thought I’d give it a go.

I have to say I really enjoyed the story. The central characters are well drawn and the setting is ideal for bringing to light and life the conflicts and challenges faced by ordinary people in times of adversity. Sophie is totally plausible and as a listener I felt desperate for her and the situation she finds herself in as she’s shipped off to Ravensbruck. Her strength of character is fully tested and the story develops into a test of beliefs and personality. It wasn’t what I expected and as a human interest story it’s well plotted. The narration throughout was well balanced.

The latest book by Danielle Steel takes place in Germany during World War II, where a non-Jewish family experiences terror. Sophia works as a nurse in her father's hospital, and after her mother's death, she decides to join the convent to help children find safety secretly, something their parents couldn't do. This is heartwarming and like all war historical heartbreaking and shows the terror that war brings to everyone. The book is a short story, about 7 hours, and is engaging enough to finish in one day.

Thank you to W.F. Howes Ltd and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to Only The Brave, written by Danielle Steel and narrated by Samuel Roukin. I have given my honest review. The expected publication date for the book is April 25th, 2024.
