I wanted to read this one so bad because I loved the final hunt. But unfortunately I couldn’t really read it. There was so many grammar errors in this arc my brain couldn’t compute what the words should have said so I’ll be reading it once it releases for a final copy.

Cameron Prescott is still living in small town Alaska and running her dental practice there. She is dating one of the officers she met when she turned up in Alaska to hunt down her serial killer husband. When a new round of murders begins, Cameron starts to question whether or not her former spouse really died in the wilderness, or if he escaped death yet again and is back to killing young women working in education.

I enjoyed the story this time around, but did like the first installment better. This one feels a little less high-stakes than the original story did, and the twists were slower to come in The Last Hunt. It felt like this addition to the series was trying too hard to mimic what worked in the first book, and it did not have as much character development. I definitely think readers should start with the first book in the series, as there is a lot in this one that would not make much sense without knowing what happened in The Final Hunt.

Thank you to NetGalley, Audrey J. Cole, and BooksGoSocial for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I will never pass up an Audrey J Cole book, so when I saw this arc available on NetGalley I freaked out and then fan girled when I was approved to read and review it!

The Final Hunt was the first book I read by Cole, and it got me back into reading! I fell in love with the tenacity of the female main character, Cameron.

The Last Hunt is a sequel, and we follow Cameron as she has gotten into hot water again and the bodies are dropping around her. She is tested to the core as she tries to decipher who she can trust and who she should be weary of. Even though this book is part of a series, it definitely could be read as a stand alone if you picked it up without knowing.

The twists in the Last Hunt kept me on my toes and I was soooo sure of where it was headed, just for it to go far left at the end! I highly recommend Cole for mild thrillers!

I love remote/ isolated location storyline. And although books that take place in Hawaii are my favorite, books that take place in Alaska are right behind that. Our family has spent a lot of time in Alaska, so I can picture the beauty and remoteness in my mind.

John is presumed dead. John is a serial killer. Cameron hopes her husband is dead. But when a body shows up with the same MO as John’s, Cameron starts thinking there may be a copy cat killer. And on top of all that Cameron starts thinking her new State Trooper BF may be guilty.

Aack. So good. An easy read. RECOMMEND

After reading The Final Hunt, I was interested to see where this story could go next. While I did enjoy the premise of the first book and parts of the storyline, the amount of belief suspension required ultimately took away from my enjoyment. The FMC, Cam, made terrible decisions at every point. I just wanted to scream at her… “No! Don’t do that! What are you thinking?!” 🤦‍♀️

However, much to my surprise I enjoyed the second book much more than the first. While some have said it can be read as a standalone, I really wouldn’t recommend that as having the full backstory really heightens the reader experience for this book. Also, a true standalone can be read in any order without ruining too much of the plot, and that’s not the case here. If you were to read this book first, it ruins the twists of The Final Hunt entirely.

If you like police procedurals, crime thrillers, and books that take place more off the grid (the Alaskan tundra), this is the perfect series for you! Just trust me and start with The Final Hunt first. 😉

“There are some things in life you will never know you’re capable of until you’re faced with it. Killing is one of them.”

Cameron Prescott seems to be on a roll making poor relationship choices. When her most recent and now former husband, John Prescott, is dubbed Seattle’s infamous ‘Teacher Killer’, Cameron changes her identity and location in an attempt to distance herself from John, Seattle’s most prominent criminal defense attorney. In the previous book, ‘The Final Hunt’, Cameron is certain that she’s rid herself of him…forever. Now, she’s not so sure.

A dentist and widow, Cameron has moved to Tok, Alaska, a town of 1200, and tried to move forward with her life. She takes comfort in knowing that the isolated town surrounded by forest land for hundreds of miles allows her anonymity. Adding to her comfort is the fact that her latest boyfriend, Dane, is an Alaskan State Trooper.

Her world is shattered by a fresh killing that is eerily similar to her late husband’s grisly signature. Cameron, confronted by evidence, is now forced to consider that (1) John may still be alive and that (2) she’s in his crosshairs. Can a serial killer come back from the grave? Is there a copycat in this isolated small town?

Audrey J. Cole writes spectacular thrillers. I read this book in isolated Smuggler’s Cove in Skagway, Alaska. My views of a breathtaking fjord and the much-needed solitude did not alleviate my reactions to the heart-pounding thriller Cole masterfully crafted. I heard every twig snap and every stone move as the water lapped the shore. My imagination kicked into high gear and I was convinced someone was watching me and my husband. Cole’s intimate knowledge of her setting and her ability to evoke a strong emotional response is why I keep coming back to her books and eagerly anticipate her next thriller.

This spectacular book will have you re-evaluating who you trust and taking inventory of who you’ve let get close. You’ll definitely reframe ‘final’, have a heightened sense of security, and become very aware of your surroundings.

I was gifted this copy by Audrey J. Cole, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

This was a strong sequel in the Final Hunt series, it had everything that I wanted from the first book. The characters were everything that I was hoping for and enjoyed that they felt like they belonged with the first book. Audrey J. Cole has a great writing style and left me wanting to read more in this series.

This one absolutely topped the first one! The characters have more depth. The mystery is more intense. There is action, suspense, and twists. I really enjoyed Tanner. The ending was satisfying yet left it open enough for another story.

Tok, a small town in Alaska, is the last place you expect a violent crime to occur, let alone a serial killer… yet this isn’t the first time a serial killer has murdered in Tok and when another young teacher is murdered, the small town is questioning whether bad things come in threes?

The last hunt is a fantastic book that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time questioning everyone’s motives.

The female protagonist Cameron is trying to rebuild her life after discovering her ex-husband was a serial killer targeting and assaulting young, female teachers. When another teacher winds up dead she is convinced her ex-husband is still alive and coming to get his revenge against her.

Cameron’s new partner is a Sargent in the local police force who isn’t convinced the her ex-husband is alive but what he does know is the new victim fits the MO of a serial killer from Tok several decades prior. And the suspected killer was a police officer…

The chapters written from the point of view of the victims are tense and terror-stricken. The emotional response and thought patterns feel very real and human. You can’t help but fall in love with them and grieve their loss and pain.

As Cameron deals with complex emotional trauma, uncovering layers of secrets and things better left alone, you will fall in love with the characters and vow vengeance on their behalf.

The last hunt is a sequel but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend picking it up.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the copy of The Last Hunt by Audrey J. Cole. What a great sequel to The Final Hunt! Imagine thinking your serial killer husband is finally dead, then the killing starts again. Did Cameron’s husband do it or was it her new boyfriend? If you’re looking for a fast-paced book, this one is well-written and will keep you guessing. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Such a fast-paced, riveting thriller: I could not put it down! As good if not better than the amazing first book in the series. For some thrillers, I find myself waiting to get to the end to figure out the “big twist,” but with this one, I was captivated throughout the entire thing.

This is book 2 of a series but I feel like it could be read as a stand-alone. It’s a fast paced and well written murder mystery. A serial killer is on the loose again and they have to be stopped. I fell right into rhythm with the story. Would I be like Cameron after her two failed marriages. Probably and everyone looked guilty to me. I loved the twists and turns and definitely recommend this.
Thanks Bookouture via NetGalley.

This book is well written and Audrey Cole is just like HOLY CRAP ... the writing is fantastic.

The book picks up where the first one left off and set in Alaska :) Once she moves there its like Groundhog day all over again.

The book had me at page one and easy to read and follow. Hope the series continues.

Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.

In "The Final Hunt" John Prescott and his friend are on a hunting trip and he is attacked by a bear. His friend seeks help but arrive too late and John cannot be found and assumed dead.
John’s wife Cameron finds crime pictures that link John to the notorious ‘Teacher Killer’. At first Cameron is shocked but soon considers John isn’t dead but is hiding from his crimes.

This story picks up where that story left off. Cameron thought she left all murders behind her when she moved to Tok, Alaska. But shortly after her move, more teachers are being killed. She is worried that her husband didn’t die.
Cameron, now a widow has the support of Dane her next door neighbor who is with the local police as well as her boyfriend also Detective Tanner from Seattle they all agree that it appears the past is repeating itself.

The Last Hunt is the sequel to The Final Hunt by Audrey J. Cole and is as thrillery as you'd expect from this marvellous author. Secrets are buried and dug up. You can't throw a brick without hitting guilt. The pace is quick and snappy and the pages almost turn themselves.

Tok, Alaska, is the ideal setting for critters of all kinds, including humans and bears. The former are more dangerous than the latter and there are enough heartstopping chase scenes and goosebumps to go around. Dentist Cameron Prescott is starting her life anew with her state trooper boyfriend. Her serial killer ex-husband was discovered in a bear trap. Justice served? Then murder again happens with haunting echoes of the past. I was glued to my seat and tasted the fear of the chase.

This author is an automatic read for me, regardless of the synopsis. She has a knack for weaving suspense and mystery into every word. If you seek a super wilderness thriller with just enough grit to make it compelling yet not graphic, this has your name all over it.

My sincere thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this riveting novel.

I vowed never to make this mistake again - however I have once more fallen into the trap of reading a sequel without realizing its part of a series! Thankfully I think Last Hunt works just fine as a stand-alone however I will mention series elements further down.

Overall I would say the plot is fairly standard thriller, however with a quite pleasant (well pleasant from a enjoyable read POV) twist that the majority of the book is focussed on the MC and her experiences as a survivor, there are some police procedure type scenes but they mostly consistent of Detective Tanner eating gum and trying to talk on the phone while others interrupt him.

No the majority of the story is about Cameron, trying to balance the guilt of some her past actions, with the paranoia that her past might still be coming for her. Because I was unaware of the first book I genuinely thought that the author was trying something a bit different and placing their thriller story in the aftermath of a serial killer investigation - and strangely either way it works. I think readers of the first book might be a little more connected with Cameron, whereas as a new reader I was more sucked in by the complexities of her past and her life (and I confess to the point where for a moment or two I though 'gasp maybe she's the killer' a thought that wouldn't work if you knew this book was a sequel right?)

I liked that the book leaned more into the psychological than the action - the final scenes were I thought a little tropey but not disappointing. A good book. .

The Last Hunt by Audrey J Cole is book number two in the series, and I was thrilled to receive an ARC. Unfortunately, the copy that I downloaded is completely unreadable. This is beyond being a case of an 'uncorrected proof' and is almost as if it is written in another language. Based on the first book, which I loved, I am confident that this would be a five star read, so I have awarded it as such. I would love an opportunity to read this in the future.

Thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for granting my request for an ARC.

This was an amazing sequel! I enjoyed the story line and could not put it down. Audrey Cole is descriptive to the point you can almost believe you are actually there watching things unfold.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller!
