Lola works in high end hospitality but when things go wrong in Hong Kong she is offered a job and moves to join her ex boss on the private Keeper Island in paradise. Nobody can be trusted, so will trouble follow Lola?!
This is a good read and quite fun, I loved how the plot developed and although I did guess the ending it did not ruin it for me. The epilogue leaves room for a further instalment, so I look forward to this. The cover attracted me to this book, the pace was steady and the characters were interesting, so overall I enjoyed it.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC Copy

I really loved this book, it had me hooked right from the start and all the twists and turns kept me engaged right through to the end. I finished it in under a day it was that good! The reveals were really good and the epilogue took me totally by surprise so I’m excited with the thought we might get a second book!!

Initially, the story unfolds at a leisurely pace, mirroring the laid-back beach atmosphere. However, as details about the characters and their tangled pasts start to emerge, the intrigue deepens. Lola is a compelling protagonist, and while it takes a little time to truly get into the story, her determination and cautious curiosity keep you invested. The resort guests are fascinatingly shifty, each one with their own hidden agenda and layers that gradually peel away, adding to the tension.

While it’s not a breakneck thriller, The Getaway offers a steady build-up that suits its sun-soaked, sinister setting. Nicola Martin has crafted a slow-burn mystery that draws you in with its air of danger lurking beneath paradise’s surface. If you enjoy a more measured pace with rich characterisation and a generous dose of suspense, this one’s perfect for a leisurely read on the beach—or when you just wish you were on one!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to enjoy this book more. The premise and cover art looked interesting and I was eager to get stuck in but unfortunately I think this was just too slow to be a thriller. I didn’t care for any of the characters and whilst the vivid description of Keeper Island and surrounding areas were a nice bit of escapism, I think the rest of the scene setting and character development was lacking.

It’s a shame because this had potential to be a great beach read whodunnit type of story, but by the end you’re just desperate to find out who it is because the lead up has been excruciatingly drawn out.

An absolute thrill ride of a beachy novel. Why is Lola suddenly in 'paradise' seemingly after blowing up her life in Asia? On Keeper Island, the staff and the one percenters on their idllyic getaways don't want to hear Lola's theories of foul play when their beloved manager seemingly drowns in a jet ski accident.
Why is her new roommate so secretive and is the handsome Brady from Wall Street exactly what he seems?

A pacy thriller for those who also enjoy a little sunshine with their murders.

A great twisty, destination thriller. Lola works in high class hospitality but when things go wrong in Hong Kong she moves to join her ex boss on a private island paradise. Things are not as they seem on Keeper Island, absolutely no one can be trusted and it’s not a paradise. A tropical storm provides a locked room aspect and a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere. The epilogue leaves room for a further instalment which I would look forward to. Recommended.

Trouble seems to find and follow Lola.. Her job as a hotel manager in Hong Kong has ended in tears, so when Mike offers her a job on the private Keeper Island in the Caribbean she she doesn't hesitate.

This is a good read and quite fun. I loved how the plot developed and although I did guess the ending it did not ruin my reading..

Thank you NetGalley and Bloomsbury publishing for an ARC of the Getaway!

Not my usual style and a reason I love the ARCs is that I read things I might not normally.

I struggled at the start reading this with an my pace as there was a lot of jumping about between characters and I got a bit confused but this settle down by the middle and from then on the page turning picked up pace.

Escaping your past on a tropical island, only to find the things you have previously tried to run from or change are never too far away!

I would happily read another by the same author!

Man, this was just so boring.

There are too many side characters that I couldn't keep track off, too much time is wasted on beach activities rather than solving the mystery, and the guy who died is severely unlikable in an uninteresting way, making me not care about solving his murder mystery, whatsoever. Reading this felt so much like a chore.

I saw reviews saying the book was funny, but I don't remember a single instance of comedy in the story. Maybe it's because it's British humor? Or maybe I just didn't care enough to pick up any of the jokes or jabs in the prose.

I dunno, I could go on about a couple specific details, like Lola's backstory and how dumb I found it, but I really don't feel like it. Putting anymore energy into this book would drain me dry, surely, and I'd rather save it for books that deserve it.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

WOW. My first book by this author & won’t be my last!

This was a really twisty book - and I loved it! We meet our FMC Lola, and all we have is blood, death & her sudden arrival on a remote, luxurious island in the Caribbean.

From the staff to the visitors, no one can be trusted. The author has really captured each character’s personality and their relationships with the right air of mystery, it made me feel like I was right on the island living among them.

The epilogue makes for a great ending, but makes me wonder if we’ll be back on Keeper Island for a second visit?!

DNF at the beginning but something I see myself coming back to at a later date.

Honestly I had no idea what to expect with this novel, but it pleasantly surprised me. I am normally a plot driven girl, not often forming much of a bond with a lot of characters in these types of reads, but I really enjoyed getting to know Lola and the other characters on the Island and unravelling the secrets they all kept from one another,

To begin with, I wasn't sure what I had signed up for; describing an island in a beautiful way made me think I'd picked up the wrong book. As the story progressed, I really enjoyed the way in which this paradise became far from that.

An overall great read for any lovers of mystery and thrillers.

Loved every minute. Gripping read full of twists and turns. Feel like the epilogue leaves it on a cliffhanger and would love a second book to continue from there. Will be keeping an eye out to see if there is 🤞

Thank you Nicola Martin, Bloombury Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC.

Lola is running away. Her job as a hotel manager in Hong Kong has ended in tears, blood and broken hearts so when Lola’s dubious mentor Mike Moxham offers her a job on the private Keeper Island in the Caribbean she hot foots it there without looking back and is determined to make the most of her second chance. Paradise quickly turns ugly when Mike turns up dead the next day after a blow out party and everything on the island is not as rosy as it seems. The Getaway is White Lotus lite, the plot rattles along and none of the characters are particularly likeable and Lola makes some extremely questionable decisions at key moments in the plot making it slightly cartoonish but that’s no bad thing. It’s a romp.

Overall I enjoyed this book. There were some aspects that were hard to follow, there were too many characters which resulted in getting a bit lost and having to think about who everyone was, and I wasn’t a major fan of the ending - I think an attempt at many twists made it quite muddled. There were some positives: it was a nice idea and there were some good plot twists. 4 stars.
